Well, yes. CQRS stands for "Command Query Responsibility Segregation", and is an architectural pattern which is rapidly gaining popularity. It offers clear guidance on how to build highly scalable systems that embrace asynchronous operations. In this talk we'll look at what CQRS is, how it lives up to the promises, and what kinds of systems would benefit from this approach. And then we’ll take the pattern and see what it takes to implement on top of Windows Azure. create Calagator::Event 1250459676 Lightning Talk & Discussion Free for All Roll back

description nil A completely chaotic, non-directed, organic discussion of our favorite web and design tools, ideas, methodologies, or anything relevant to the group. We had one of these in December (feel free to bring snacks, food, etc) and it went over very well. So well, in fact, many people have requested another sooner rather than later. So here's the deal: We can set up a laptop on the projector and anyone who is interested can spend 5 minutes discussion and showing off their favorite tools, frameworks, projects - or just stand up and talk. Anyone interested should prepare a bit in advance, keep it short (we're serious about the 5 minute cutoff!), and let's cram as much (web and design related) knowledge as we can in 90 minute!

update Calagator::Event 1250459666 Database Testing: Maximum Coverage with a Minimum of Data Roll back

description Maximum Coverage with a Minimum of Data: How Equivalence Classes can be used to narrow down the amount of data needed for analysis In Quality Assurance, an Equivalence Class is the set of all inputs that can be seen as interchangeable with one another without impacting the results of the test, where only one of them needs to be tested in order to have confidence in the test results. Automation can certainly help facilitate running all scenarios, but it isn't always possible or practical to create a completely automated test suite. This lunch time presentation is ideal for the QA Engineer who is trying create a data set and complimentary set of test cases that accurately validates the code without having to run through a seemingly endless matrix of possibilities. When making an analysis of the behavior of a system that is based on a large set of data, you have basically three options presented: Full data-set analysis, Analysis of a randomly sampled subset of the data, or Selection of a subset of data based on Equivalence Class Elimination. In this presentation we will talk about the pro's and con's of each approach, and then focus on how to proceed with the Equivalence Class methodology in greater detail. Please join us for this informative and interactive discussion followed by a Q&A session. description nil A polyglot programming group meeting in the heart of The Beave. We seem to talk a lot about oddball programming languages and their features. And the usual geekery you'd expect from a programmer's group. This month's talk is by Richard Fobes: "Faster than an FFT, the audio-oriented QRST (spectral transform)" Based on the interest Phil and Ed expressed in my spectral transform, I've spent lots of time during the past two months further developing the software. Besides getting it to work better -- it still needs refinement -- I've ended up creating an audio-compression method I call QRST. I'll be playing sound files to demonstrate what the spectral transform, the audio-compression format, and decompression back into sound files can do, so this will be much more interesting than the words "spectral transform" suggest. BTW, being faster than the FFT is just one of the side effects of having designed it for use with sound files. Fourier transforms are sooo ssllooww.

create Calagator::Event 1250459654 Mobile Portland: Ambient Location Apps and Geoloqi Roll back

description nil Named by JWT Intelligence as one of the 100 things to watch in 2011, Portland's Geoloqi has garnered national attention for being at the forefront of location-based services. Forbes recently asked if Geoloqi was "Foursquare's Biggest Threat?" Why is there so much buzz for this small project in Portland? Because Geoloqi is on the cutting edge of taking location information and making it truly useful. As Aaron Parecki, one of the co-founders of Geoloqi, explained to Forbes, "I’d like to share my location with a client if I’m meeting them somewhere, so they can know when I’ll arrive." We're honored to have Aaron Parecki and Amber Case as our first presenters of 2011. They'll be talking about the next generation of location apps and the importance of ambient location services. Presentation Description Wouldn't it be nice if your colleague's phone could SMS its location to you? If you know position and velocity, you know when they'll arrive. The result: the interface disappears. No redundant actions or queries. The same software could turn your lights on as you approach the house. Or automatically "check in" to certain locations for you. Or leave a note for yourself the next time you're at the store. Augmented reality and location were hot topics last year, but there is often a confusion between aesthetics vs. practicality, and fantasy vs. reality. This presentation will highlight the advantages and disadvantages of visual and non-visual augmented reality. In the presentation, they will highlight why developers of apps should look at what users want to do now, as well as what users want to do in the future, why social apps should try to mirror real-world relationships, why sharing should be about who you share with as well as how long you’re sharing, and why developers should think about how to make apps "ambient” and require less user interaction. They will cover the current players in the geolocation market, the location market itself, and why location is such a big deal. They will discuss real-time location sharing, geolocation triggers such as geonotes, proximal notification and automatic checkins, and privacy and security. What Will Be Covered * The location market. Where it is now and future projections. * Why the market is here (timing, hardware, affordability, etc.). * Some history (PARC research, etc.) * The current players: What they’re doing and where they fall short * What we’re passionate about and are trying to solve. * Philosophy of interface evaporation. * (Other cool things you can do with ambient location and sensors (fun home automation tricks and pranks). Aaron Parecki Aaron Parecki is a Portland-based iPhone and PHP developer interested in solving practical problems with technology. In his free time, he enjoys geolocation, linguistics, and building home automation systems and IRC bots with a sense of humor. For the past 2.5 years, he has been tracking and visualizing his location every 6 seconds, making him a frequent presenter at the Portland data visualization group. His fascination with location sharing and GPS began at the age of 6, when he traced the routes of family road trips on a map with a highlighter. He combined these interests and created Geoloqi.com with Amber Case in an effort to help people connect in the real world. Aaron has 11 years experience in web app development, database design, graphic design and printing, and server administration. You can learn more about Aaron at aaronparecki.com, and you can follow him on twitter at @aaronpk. Amber Case Amber Case is a cyborg anthropologist and user experience designer from Portland, Oregon. Her main focus is mobile software, augmented reality and data visualization, as these reduce the amount of time and space it takes for people to connect with information. Case founded Geoloqi.com, a private location sharing application, out of a frustration with existing social protocols around text messaging and wayfinding. Last year, Case was featured in Fast Company as one of their Most Influential Women in Technology and spoke at TED on technology and humans. She worked with Fortune 500 companies at Wieden+Kennedy and now works as a user experience designer at Vertigo Software in Portland, Oregon. You can learn more about Case at caseorganic.com, cyborganthropology.com and on Twitter at @caseorganic.

create Calagator::Event 1250459652 OMSI Science Pub! - Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World Roll back

description nil Visionary game designer Jane McGonigal reveals how we can harness the power of games to solve real-world problems and boost global happiness. More than 174 million Americans are gamers, and the average young person in the United States will spend 10,000 hours gaming by the age of 21. According to world-renowned game designer Jane McGonigal, the reason for this mass exodus to virtual worlds is that videogames are increasingly fulfilling genuine human needs. In this groundbreaking exploration of the power and future of gaming, McGonigal reveals how we can use the lessons of game design to fix what is wrong with the real world. Drawing on positive psychology, cognitive science, and sociology, Reality Is Broken uncovers how game designers have hit on core truths about what makes us happy and used these discoveries to astonishing effect in virtual environments. Videogames consistently provide the exhilarating rewards, stimulating challenges, and epic victories that are so often lacking in the real world. But why, McGonigal asks, should we use the power of games for escapist entertainment alone? Her research suggests that gamers are expert problem solvers and collaborators, since they cooperate with other players to overcome daunting virtual challenges, and she helped pioneer a fast-growing genre of games that aims to turn gameplay to socially positive ends. In Reality Is Broken, she reveals how these new Alternate Reality Games are already improving the quality of our daily lives, fighting social problems like depression and obesity, and addressing vital twenty-first century challenges—and she forecasts the thrilling possibilities that lie ahead. She introduces us to games like World Without Oil, a simulation designed to brainstorm—and therefore avert—the challenges of a worldwide oil shortage, and Evoke, a game commissioned by the World Bank Institute that sends players on missions to address issues from poverty to climate change. Jane McGonigal, PhD, is the director of Game Research and Development at the Institute for the Future. Her work has been featured in The Economist, Wired, and The New York Times and on MTV, CNN, and NPR. In 2009, BusinessWeek called her one of the 10 most important innovators to watch. She has given keynote addresses at TED, South by Southwest Interactive, and the Game Developers Conference and was a featured speaker at The New Yorker Conference. This Science Pub is presented in partnership with Powell’s Books. Powell’s will have Jane’s books available for purchase at the Science Pub and Jane will sign them after the talk.
