This seminar features three presentations which will cover batteries, drive system design, and a novel method of manufacture for electric and hybrid vehicles.
In addition, there will be a non-site display of vehicles from EVDrive and Wikispeed.
Registration/check-in starts at 8:30 am, with the seminar starting promptly at 9:00.
âLi-Ion Is it our Mobility Futureâ
Laurence Dunn, Chief Engineer with Nacco Materials Handling Group will speak on how advanced battery technologies are helping bring more sustainable and greener technologies to the market while increasing productivity and decreasing operational costs.
Laurence Dunn is Chief Engineer NMHG Inc. a Global Leader for company Innovation. He has spent 40 years in Automotive Electronics, and the past 4 Years working on Fuel Cell and Li-Ion Projects for Forklifts. He is a committee member for UL 2580 âStandards for Batteries for use in Electric Vehiclesâ.
âAutomotive Technology - The Next Generation Drive Systemsâ
Bob Simpson, CTO of EVDrive, will speak on how pure electric vehicles can meet or exceed the performance of internal combustion powered vehicles when powered by the right batteries in the right quantity and in the right location with the right secret sauce and systems integration to pull it all together. This presentation will discuss the design and development of electric vehicle drive systems. It will cover:
** Battery cell technology
** Motor technology
** Power sources and impact to grid,
** Comparative cost of operation and service,
** Solution to Range anxiety with electric vehicles
Bob Simpson is the CTO and Drive System Engineer for EVDrive Inc. He also has been employed since 1977 at Tektronix as a Sr. HW Design Engineer. In 2008 he designed and fabricated a full performance electric conversion of a BMW 325i. Elimination of fuel use and it's emissions was the goal but without sacrifice of performance OR economy. âAgile Manufacturing: The WIKISPEED 100 mpg car"
Joe Justice, CEO of Seattle-based Wikispeed will speak about Wikispeed, an âopen sourceâ project, developing vehicles using principles from modular, lean, agile software development. The gas-powered cars, evolved from Wikispeed's entry in the Progressive Automotive X-Prize, are designed to be inexpensive, safe, efficient and fast -- made of aluminum extrusions and structural carbon fiber.
Team WIKISPEED entered a $10 Million competition to produce road legal 100+ mpg cars. They built the impossible in three months. The WIKISPEED Team will talk about Agile practices applied to enormously speed up physical manufacturing. Joe Justice leads WIKISPEED, a team of 102 volunteers in 7 countries, and walks through how their 100 MPG road car was made possible through modular design, iterative development, and Agile project management.
Joe takes a deep dive on exactly how a 100 mpg can be prototyped, validated, and brought to market by "using less stuff" and extremely quickly. Joe will use the example and of the design and development of their revolutionary 100 mpg, gasoline powered, four-seat car with a target price of $17,995.
This ground breaking work expands the agile process to design and manufacturing of the car. The talk will provide tools and take-aways for engineers and executives, in manufacturing and software, looking to improve their processes. New professionals and students can see examples of the value found in pairing, prioritized backlog driven development, and extreme programming, as they see the methodology jump from software teams to research, manufacturing, and product engineering.
Joe Justice is a Seattle-area lean-software consultant and entreprenerd, and a registered automotive manufacture since 2007. In 2010, Joeâs X Prize team, WIKISPEED, tied for 10th place in the mainstream class of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize, a $10 million challenge for 100+ MPGe automobiles. Joe has spoken on social web application development, project methodology, and agile best practices to audiences at Denver University, University of California Berkley, Google, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Rotary International, and others. Joe is currently on assignment at Zynga and CEO of WIKISPEED.

This school-aged program is sponsored through FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), www.usfirst.org in which students build a full-sized robot in only six weeks to compete in completing the task. The students develop skills in engineering, electronics, programming, pneumatics, CAD design, welding and marketing.
Now in its eleventh year, âOctoberBestâ continues to maintain its precedence as the preeminent Northwestern High-Tech Conference and Expo event. Excellent opportunities abound for engineers, planners and purchasing managers alike.

The Oregon Section's officer position for Treasurer has become vacant due to an out-of-state move by the present Treasurer.
Candidate nominations are solicited to fill this vacancy. To be eligible, a candidate must be a current member of the IEEE and able to be present and give a candidate's statement at the September Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday, September 13,2011.

The members of the Dynamic Robotics Laboratory explore, design, and build robotic systems that move swiftly and can easily handle impacts and kinetic energy transfer. Examples include walking and running robots, force-controlled actuators for delicate tasks such as bomb defusing, lower- and upper-extremity powered prosthetic limbs, exoskeletons for military use or assisted mobility for disabled persons, or catching a ball in the air. Many of these tasks are difficult or impossible for traditional robots due to fundamental limitations of the hardware, such as motor inertia and torque limits. The dynamics of the mechanical system are an inseparable aspect of the behavior of a robot, and can be either a limitation or an asset; thus, our approach integrates the design of the hardware dynamics with the design of the active software controller. Novel actuator designs and mechanisms combined with complementary software controllers can lead to robots that are as dexterous and agile as humans.

Our big day is coming up. Portland City Council will consider adoption of Connecting to our Future: Portland's Broadband Strategic Plan www.portlandonline.com/cable on September 14 @ 2:00 pm. The Plan provides a long-term strategic vision for the role of Broadband infrastructure, devices and services in Portland’s future economy, livability and sustainability.
If you are interested in testifying there will be a sign up sheet outside Council Chambers just prior to the session. Presenters are asked to prepare remarks of 3 minutes or less. The Balanced Scorecard and Strategy Map (BalSC-StratMap) combination is an increasingly popular strategic toolset that all OD practitioners should become familiar with. Not only is the BalSC-StratMap a powerful tool for turning strategies into executable realities, it is also liable to arrive in the OD practitioner's environment without warning (often by way of the CEO or a board member learning about it at a seminar and becoming enthusiastic). The prepared OD professional will be able to help make the BalSC-StratMap a success. Without significant OD assistance, BalSC-StratMap initiatives may flounder and fail.
Just as significantly, BalSC-StratMap approaches can directly assist in boosting individual productivity by providing three of the Five Preconditions of Top Performance. In this program, Tom Cox will elaborate on this relationship and lead us in creating a BalSC-StratMap for Oregon ODN. As a result of the session, participants will have an experience-based perspective on BalSC-StratMap and how it affects both organizational and individual performance. Multiple samples will be shared, along with templates and a bibliography of sources.
Cost:
Free to current members in good standing of ODN, ASTD-Cascadia, PHRMA and PMI.
The cost for non-members is $10. The $10 fee can be used to offset the annual membership investment of $75.00 if paid at the program.
About the Speaker
Tom Cox is a successful consultant, author and speaker. He has worked in industries ranging from retail to wholesale to manufacturing to government to business services -- for firms including IBM, Oracle, Tektronix, ODOT, Intel, Regence Blue Cross, Standard Insurance, OHSU and dozens of others.
Tom is the author of one book, countless articles, and he co-authored the chapter on Metrics and Performance Improvement for a textbook on Medical Trauma Care. A frequent writer, his column runs twice a month in Oregon Business Magazineâs online edition.
A graduate of the University of Chicago, Tom earned his four-year degree in psychology in just three years, with honors. Tom was the 2002 Libertarian candidate for Governor of Oregon. |

"Where are your Keys?", a language learning game system developed by Evan Gardner, is an integrated set of teaching techniques that creates fluent speakers in a language without resorting to textbooks or homework. You can play the game anywhere, anytime, with anyone, so long as you have a single fluent speaker of the target language.â¨
Because "Where are your Keys?" is a game, learning how to play the game also trains you to teach the game. You can take your level of fluency and teach another person up to your level. It is a way for a community to rapidly teach themselves a language by making every learner a new teacher.â¨

This will be a good chance to see a well-run end of project retrospective. Itâll also be a chance to come weigh in and change what we do for next year.
Beer afterward will be at the Lucky Lab a few blocks from the meeting place (given our discoordination last month, we decided to figure the most important parts out ahead of time).
I hope to see several of you there.

The Portland Retro Gaming Expo is an annual exhibition of classic video games and systems in Portland, Oregon. We aim to recognize the history of video game systems and their authors, manufacturers and players.
That said, the classic game collecting hobby is most closely associated with the Atari 2600/5200/7800, Nintendo NES and SNES systems, Sega Master System/Genesis, and other systems released in the 1980s and early 1990s. One can expect to see these systems as well as many lesser-known systems at the Retro Gaming Expo.
In addition to home systems, we have had a larger showing of full-size arcade games to play. |

Creating a successful product in a lean environment requires more than the typical functional handoffs between engineering and marketing. Successful lean development requires collaboration, communication, and cooperation between engineering and marketing. Because of inherent difficulties of product development, adding pressures of limited time and limited staff can cause the opposite effects. Special strategies are needed for companies to be effective in a lean environment.
The Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its September Learning and Networking Event. At this event, experienced professionals will discuss their recommendations for lean product development, including discussions of processes, organizational structures, strategies, incentives, and staffing considerations. This is planned as an interactive event - the panelists will give short position statements at the start and the rest of the discussion will be based on Q&A from the audience and the moderator.

Creating a successful product in a lean environment requires more than the typical functional handoffs between engineering and marketing. Successful lean development requires collaboration, communication, and cooperation between engineering and marketing. Because of inherent difficulties of product development, adding pressures of limited time and limited staff can cause the opposite effects. Special strategies are needed for companies to be effective in a lean environment.
The Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its September Learning and Networking Event. At this event, experienced professionals will discuss their recommendations for lean product development, including discussions of processes, organizational structures, strategies, incentives, and staffing considerations. This is planned as an interactive event - the panelists will give short position statements at the start and the rest of the discussion will be based on Q&A from the audience and the moderator.

This month's meeting will be a roundtable discussion about modern web serving.
The CGI era gave way to LAMP and we're now onto the next generation:
- node.js and NoSQL make LAMP overkill for many situations
- AJAX/JavaScript are moving much application logic to the browser
- Apache is giving way to lighttpd, node.js, nginx and others
- We've gone from 9" Mac support to 1024 X 768 and now to 4" phones
- Users now routinely block ads, scripting and Flash
- Apple has declared war on Flash!
- HTML 5 and CSS 3 are starting to appear in the wild
- Security is finally coming first, not last
How have these factors changed the way you serve web content?
