CHIFOO Presents:
Roll back
| description |

Why do gamers who usually demand the most cutting edge technology still accept the primitive buzzing technologies that do not recreate the real feel of the game? They must have not yet experienced what ViviTouch can add to their gaming experience. ViviTouch enables a gamer to experience thousands of sensations in a versatile language of feedback in the palm of the hand. This allows game developers to change the way that their games interact with the gamer.
Tom will present the exciting consumer reactions from the recent introduction of this technology to gamers and game developers. A case study of the Mophie Pulse gaming case that turns the iPod Touch into a gaming platform with a rumble experience that surpasses console controllers will also be presented. Tom will introduce how game developers can enable gamers to truly experience ViviTouch for iOS, Android, and other platforms by using available design guides and SDKs.
User experience designers can use this innovative technology to communicate useful information through the sense of touch, such as who is calling or messaging, or enabling a user to feel different parts of their screen, to even potentially enable sightless typing on a touch screen. ViviTouch can become a new tool for user experience designers to integrate to create truly innovative user interfaces.
Tom joined AMI in September 2007 as Vice President of Engineering. Prior to AMI, Tom was the Engineering Program Manager for Skypilot Networks, a developer of low cost / high volume wireless infrastructure products. Prior to Skypilot, he held senior management positions in engineering and project management for several companies, including Intel, Raychem, Ericsson Fiber, WaveSplitter, and Siros Technologies. Tom has led the development of numerous successful products and projects in the wireless, LCD display, data storage, and fiber optic industries.

Data-driven web applications in ClojureScript
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
<p><a href="http://keminglabs.com/">Kevin Lynagh</a> will talk to us about data-driven web applications with ClojureScript:</p>
<p><span>A web page or application is, at its core, just a visual representation of data that people can read, look at, and manipulate.</span> <span>Typically the mapping between the abstract data and elements on the screen is implicit in the code: take some piece of the data, do X here, do Y there; when the user clicks on that thing, modify the page here, and so on.</span></p>
<p><span>Reasoning about such code is difficult: either control is inverted across many different callbacks with complected concerns, or one must endure a great deal of ceremony with models, controllers, view models, and views/templates to structure an application.</span> <span>Ideally when we build a web application all we should have to do is describe how our application's data should be represented on the DOM.</span> <span>We shouldn't need to worry about callbacks, twiddling the attributes of particular elements, or updating cached state.</span><br><br><span>As it turns out, ClojureScript's rich data structures and semantics allows us to easily write such simple, declarative code.</span> <span>I will discuss these ideas using examples from visualization-rich dashboard applications.</span><br><br><span>Recommended reading:</span><br><br><span>C2:</span> <a href="http://keminglabs.com/c2/" target="_blank">http://keminglabs.com/c2/</a><br><span>Knockout.js:</span> <a href="http://knockoutjs.com/" target="_blank">http://knockoutjs.com/</a><br><span>Rich Hickey's talk on the benefits of immutability:</span> <a href="http://www.infoq.com/presentations/Are-We-There-Yet-Rich-Hickey" target="_blank">http://www.infoq.com/presentations/Are-We-There-Yet-Rich-Hickey</a></p> |

Inter-season edition.
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on FreeNode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Personal Telco is a collection of individuals, businesses, and organizations who share -- or plan to share -- internet connectivity rather than hoard it. It's also a group of volunteers who want this network to grow. We believe internet access should be available, fair, and uncensored. Personal Telco Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in PDX.
Whether you're a technology wizard or technically incompetent, volunteering with us is a great way to learn something new, enjoy teaching others, or use your skills to do something useful! |

Gaming for Social Good
Roll back
| description |
As the use of video games becomes more pervasive--think Angry Birds to Farmville to Wii Fitness--it becomes useful to consider their wider impact on our lives. Are they merely useful for entertainment, or can games help create change through creativity, imagination and play? Can games be valuable for mission-based groups like non-profits, NGOs and community organizations? How can game development connect students to real-world problems?
Weâll kick off the evening with a panel discussion including speakers at the intersection of gaming and game development for education, non-profit enablement and youth outreach. Our panelists will explore how gaming and the creation of games can positively impact our local communities and wider world mission-based efforts. Following audience Q&A, everyone is welcome to continue the discussion over networking, food and soft drinks.
Join us to discuss how creating games and game development can benefit the social good!

Gaming for Social Good
Hosted by PDXTech4Good and Pixel Arts

Dorkbot PDX would like to welcome you to the latest installment of our semi-regular presentation series:
#DorkbotPDX 0x09
#(zero-based)
When: Monday, June 18th, 2012 - 8pm
Where: Backspace (map)
Who: All ages -- open to the public
Cost: Free!
What's happening? Two great and inspiring talks!
#<a href="http://the-compound.org/lamoso.php">LAMOSO</a>
<a href="http://the-compound.org">Christi Denton</a>
The LAMOSO (LAsar/MOtion/SOund) is a MIDI controller; that is, it's a device that sends MIDI to my computer. MIDI is a standard music protocol that allows electronic musical instruments (e.g., the LAMOSO) and computers to communicate with each other. It's not audio - it's digital data that includes values for pitch, length, volume, etc.
So... the LAMOSO uses lasers and photogates to send signals to a computer, which then turns that data into sound.
The lasers hit (or don't hit) photogates. The photogates connect to a Teensy++, a "microcontroller development system" (it's the computer chip thingy in the pictures), and that sends my computer data about whether there is or is not a laser beam light hitting the photogate. Max, a music programming language, is used to interpret that data into music.
Visually and musically, what this means is that there's lasers crisscrossing an area, and when those lasers are broken, it changes the music.
#Digital Painting
<a href="http://www.mantissa.ca/">Jeremy Rotsztain</a>
Jeremy Rotsztain writes software to generate digital images that closely resemble
paintings. Instead of working with paints and pigments, he prefers to use digital materials. He collects popular images from the Internet and iconic scenes from Hollywood films -- and uses their pixels and sounds to generate entirely new
compositions.
Jeremy will be presenting and discussing two recent works:
1) "<a href="http://mantissa.ca/projects/obsessions.php">Obsessions</a>" (prints made from photos of adorable pets)
2) "<a href="http://www.mantissa.ca/projects/actionpainting.php">Action Painting</a>" (abstract expressionist animations made from high octane car chases, violent punches, fiery gun shots, and sublime explosions).
OpenDork
You!
An open-mic session for those looking to show off a project, ask a question, solicit help, or incite collaboration. |

→ |
Agile Chartering ignites your project Liftoff in a way that gives impetus to the project team, and the business, and sets the endeavor on the trajectory to success. Project leaders and team members use Agile Chartering to inform, inspire, and align everyone involved in product delivery. Experience a journey through the framework for effective, yet lightweight, "just enough" Agile chartering, including the three key elements of inspiring Purpose, collaborative Alignment, and dynamic Context. Learn why real-life team members say Agile Chartering provided the initial momentum that powered their projects toward success.
In this high energy talk, Diana Larsen, co-author of Liftoff: Launching Agile Teams and Projects, will take you on an exploration of ways to accomplish team and project Liftoffs, including the vital step of chartering the project.
Bio:
Diana Larsen partners with clients in the software industry to create, guide, and fortify resilient workplaces and improve project performance. In addition to consulting with and coaching leaders and teams on adopting Agile work systems, she draws on 20+ years of working with technical professionals to lead team, project, and whole system processes for collaborative thinking and planning. Diana co-authored Liftoff: Launching Agile Teams and Projects and Agile Retrospectives: Making Good Teams Great. She serves on the board of directors of the Agile Alliance and is a principal of FutureWorks Consulting LLC.
Details and Pizza:
This event is free and is at Puppet Labs. It begins at 6:30 pm with pizza, sponsored by PNSQC (Many thanks to both Puppet Labs and PNSQC for supporting agile in Portland).
The program starts at 7:00 pm.
After the program you're invited to join us for a no-host gathering at a nearby brewpub for further discussion of launching Agile Projects. |

Rather than posting content on many third-party silos of data, we should all begin owning our own data that we're creating. Publish short status updates on your own domain, and syndicate to Twitter. Publish photos on your own domain, syndicate to Flickr, etc, etc.
This is the basis of the "Indie Web" movement. We'll get together for two days to talk about what has been done in the field, and where still needs to be done. There will be workshops and breakout sessions the second day.

PLUG: The Ganeti Virtualization Management System
Roll back
| description |
Lance Albertson of the Oregon State University Open Source Lab will give an introduction to the Ganeti Virtualization Management System.
Ganeti is a robust cluster virtualization management software tool. Itâs built on top of existing virtualization technologies such as Xen and KVM and other Open Source software. Its integration with various technologies such as DRBD and LVM results in a cheaper High Availability infrastructure and linear scaling.
This hands-on tutorial will cover a basic overview of Ganeti, the step-by-step install & setup of a single-node and multi-node Ganeti cluster, operating the cluster, and some best practices of Ganeti. Finally, deploying and using a web-based management tool called Ganeti Web Manager.
Lance is the Associate Director of Operations for the Oregon State University Open Source Lab (OSL) and a Gentoo Linux Developer. He joined the Gentoo Linux project in 2003 and have been involved in managing their infrastructure and maintaining about a dozen or so packages in portage. Lance directs all of the hosting and development activities that the OSL provides for the open source community including projects such as Kernel.org, Drupal, Apache Software Foundation, and many many more. Lance has been at the OSL since 2007.

We'll try and have the box images available on USB drives at the meeting but its always great to have everything setup prior to the meeting and not saturate the wifi.

Hack for Portland's Schools
Roll back
| description |
<b>THE CHALLENGE</b>
Teams will have ten hours to concept and create a prototype that addresses the challenge. Successful ideas will connect Portland citizens to their public schools, and/or engage them in the five ways schools have said would be most useful - a coat, a can, a book, an hour, or a grand. The hack day will conclude with five-minute demos of each team's projects.
<b>BACKGROUND</b>
On June 2nd, in collaboration with the Mayorâs Office and GOOD Magazine, weâre holding a Hack Day to explore how technology can be used to connect Portlandâs public schools with neighborhoods and business.
This project emerged from a GOOD Ideas for Cities event that took place earlier this year. You can see the presentation on GOOD's site.
http://www.good.is/post/supporting-neighborhood-schools-a-good-idea-for-portland/
<b>THE PROBLEM</b>
85% of people in central Portland have no children of school age. This means that the majority has no natural connection with the school system. We want to make it easier for that 85% to support Portlandâs public schools.
Our research with schools and supporting organizations showed that a few simple things â books, food, clothing and people's time â could make a big difference to students. We also learnt that there are many organizations in Portland that are set up to support schools in these ways. We want to build a tool that makes it easy to find these organizations, and to give resources to them.
<b>HACK DAY RESOURCES</b>
To help us solve this, weâll have representatives from Portlandâs public schools and from some of the main organizations who are already supporting these schools. The Software Association of Oregon, which has built CitySync will be joining us as well.
Designers and our partners will be available on the day for further conversations about promotion of the tools that we create.
We are also connecting with the Personal Democracy Forum taking place in NYC the following week, and hope to feed the best ideas into that event.

We also learnt that there are many organizations in Portland that are set up to support schools in these ways. We want to build a tool that makes it easy to find these organizations, and to give resources to them.
<b>HACK DAY RESOURCES</b>
To help us solve this, we’ll have representatives from Portland’s public schools and from some of the main organizations who are already supporting these schools.
