<p><strong>About the Speaker:</strong><br>
**********************</p>
<p>Paul was first introduced to Selenium in 2008 while working as the lead QA engineer for an American company while based in Prague, Czech Republic.</p>
<p>Working alone with few resources, he was painfully aware of the lack of documentation. Using the Selenium user's and developer's forums, Paul kicked off an effort to write the first Selenium documentation. From Prague, he lead a team including three others from India, the UK, and Argentina to write the original Selenium 1.0 documentation. Their efforts are still posted under the Documentation tab at www.seleniumhq.org</p>
<p>Since then, Paul has developed test suites using Selenium IDE, Selenium-RC, Selenium-Flex and Selenium-WebDriver. Currently, he is developing his second test suite using the Selenium 2.0 WebDriver API. After attending the Selenium Conference last spring, Paul has become a passionate advocate of using the Page Object test design pattern for building highly maintainable and extensible test suites. Paul continues to be involved with the Selenium documentation as his time allows.</p> |

CHIFOO: Why Itâs Time to Move Beyond the Usability Lab
Roll back
| description |
Why Itâs Time to Move Beyond the Usability Lab
Usability labs and similar settings have served us well for 30+ years of research and practical study of human interfaces. But itâs time to move beyond that and leverage the power of the web.
In the early days of computers, when users tended to be much more uniform, usability labs and their associated smaller numbers of study participants worked well. The internet, web, and proliferation of mobile devices have changed things. Itâs hard to imagine someone who wouldnât be a candidate user for the applications that many of us design and develop these days. We also know much more about what works and doesnât work for users. Now, instead of being used to uncover major design issues, usability testing is often used to identify small design improvements that can make a big impact to a companyâs bottom line.
Thomas will present case studies and discuss the pros and cons of some of the latest trends in usability testing, from âcrowd-sourcingâ to automated techniques for metric collection.
About the Speaker
Thomas S. Tullis., Ph.D., is Vice President of Usability & User Insight at Fidelity Investments. He joined Fidelity in 1993 and was instrumental in the development of the companyâs usability team and a state-of-the-art Usability Lab. He received his B.A. from Rice University, M.A. in Experimental Psychology from New Mexico State University and Ph.D. in Engineering Psychology from Rice University.
With more than 30 years of experience in human-computer interface studies, Thomas has published over 35 papers and holds eight U.S. patents. Prior to Fidelity, he held positions at Canon Information Systems, McDonnell Douglas, Unisys Corporation, and Bell Laboratories. He is co-author (with Bill Albert) of the book Measuring the User Experience: Collecting, Analyzing, and Presenting Usability Metrics, and co-author (with Bill Albert and Donna Tedesco) of the new book Beyond the Usability Lab: Conducting Large-scale User Experience Studies. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Bentley University, where he teaches in the graduate program in Human Factors in Information Design.

CHIFOO Meeting: Making and Sharing Space: Design Success for Interaction and Industrial Designers
Roll back
| description |
Presented by Gretchen Anderson, of Lunar Design.
When designing products with both form and function aspects to them, a team of people with varied talents is required. Industrial designers and interaction designers must come together to create something that is holistic and cohesive. But our education, focus, and areas of expertise can be very different. This presentation will focus on how the âwar roomâ or actual physical space that the team inhabits can help the success of the design and foster great team relationships. In this shared space is where designers can give their ideas shape, and explore solutions together.
Gretchen Anderson is the Director of Interaction Design at Lunar Design in San Francisco. Her experience working in firms that do both industrial and interaction design has taught her that getting ideas through the concept phase is a difficult yet crucial stage to successful product design. Gretchen was educated at Harvard and has worked in the design industry for 13 years creating unique products and experiencesâfrom medical products and consumer electronics, to enterprise software applications and consumer websites. Her clients include Starbucks, Virgin Records, HP, Microsoft, Intel, SanDisk, and Johnson & Johnson. |

JETRO Clean Tech Seminar Series: Japan-U.S. Smart Grid Market Trends of the Future
Roll back
| description |
Global companies are closely eyeing the opportunity in the now-developing and popular smart grid market. Currently, the U.S. is the hot spot for smart grid development and is also attracting Asian companies from Japan, China and Korea, who are interested in deploying their smart grid technologies in the U.S. However, a majority of the U.S.-based smart grid technology companies in this market are unaware of the opportunities outside of the U.S.
This seminar will off er opportunities to learn what is happening in the smart grid market in Japan and the U.S. Furthermore, in this seminar you will learn ideas on how Japanese and U.S. smart grid companies could complement each other to grow the market together.
The general difference in the current implementation of the smart grid in Japan and the U.S. is that the U.S. seems more business-focused, aiming to reduce energy costs and develop infrastructure, while Japan seems more society-focused, seeking to reduce carbon emissions as a whole. Japan already has a reliable grid and is pushing for advanced integrated control including demand-side to be ready for intermittent renewable energy sources. In the United States, however, thereâs a need for highly reliable transmission and distribution networks.
Join us for an opportunity to advance a close working relationship between Japan and the U.S. to develop and deploy the smart grid in each nation. |

In the United States, however, there’s a need for highly reliable transmission and distribution networks.
Join us for an opportunity to advance a close working relationship between Japan and the U.S. to develop and deploy the smart grid in each nation. |

The April Portland SharePoint User Group meeting will be held on Wednesday April 18th, 2012. This month Julia Bertschinger from CSG Pro will speak about out-of-the-box and basic SharePoint Designer workflows. For those of you interested in advanced workflow topics including Visual Studio solutions and custom workflow actions we plan to cover those topics in May.
Please note the parking location and remote attendee option is on the LinkedIn Group Site or the Portland SharePoint User Group Portal.
Lunch will be provided by AvePoint, catered provided by Dinner Spectacular and as in previous months we need to get a headcount of how many folks will attend and want lunches. Weâve set up a survey that allows you to change your response so if you initially plan on attending but something comes up you can re-open the survey and let us know. If you plan to attend please be sure to complete the survey by Monday, March 19th at noon since we have to place the lunch order that afternoon. You can find the survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6KQ5VJT . Please be sure to take a minute to fill out the survey so we can have an accurate lunch count and let the parking lot know how many vehicles to expect |

R&D Tax Credits for Software and Biotech Companies
Roll back
| description |
The Research and Development Tax Credit â Benefits, Caveats, and Strategies
Recently, The Fiscal Times identified the research and development tax credit as #8 of the 10 largest big corporate tax breaks*. Although over 17,000 companies claim this credit nationwide, 100 large multinationals receive over half of the 7+ billion dollars in savings each year. Find out what your company can do to receive the same level of benefit the Fortune 100 have been receiving for years.
Many medical device, software, and biotech companies eligible to benefit handsomely from this credit have never applied for it, or are only receiving a small fraction of what they are eligible for. R&D credits reimburse the costs associated with a companyâs breakthroughs, as well as the day-to-day activities that bring improvements in products, software, processes, profits, and productivity. The research and development credit was enacted to encourage innovation, and applies to activities throughout an organization â from conceptualization, prototyping and production, through testing and the planning of quality control.
Specific coverage will include:
Identifying qualifying activities throughout your company.
Early stage companies - why it is never too early to claim the credit.
How to effectively lower the cost of process improvement, product testing, patent applications, and other activities not commonly considered as R&D.
Credits for contract manufacturing â the companies who design devices and create software arenât the only ones eligible.
Potential risks and strategies for getting the most out of the credit.
Who should attend:
CFOâs, controllers, in-house counsel, and others involved in financial management.
Accountants and tax attorneys.
Company owners, angel investors, venture capitalists, seed fund managers, and other investors looking to maximize their investment returns.
Patent attorneys, operational consultants, Lean gurus, and test, and design firms interested in educating their clients on a credit that can effectively lower their service costs.

According to Business Incubation Works, "Business incubators reduce the risk of small business failures. Historically, NBIA* member incubators have reported that 87 percent of all firms that have graduated from their incubators are still in business." In this webinar series, OEN will explore the ups and downs of starting a company in an incubator.
What really happens within start up incubators? Do they help companies become successful or at least get over certain challenges? What type of companies and people find the incubator experience to be a positive? Are there downfalls to going through the experience? These are just a few of the questions you can ask Nathan Taggart who has started his successful company in an incubator.
Want to submit your questions ahead of time? Email them to Larry Williams at [email protected] for the next session.

Sandwiched somewhere between user research and high-fidelity prototypes, sketching is a powerful, portable, fast and creative tool to bring to bear for capturing ideas, working through possibilities and communicating to stakeholders. Whether or not you are comfortable with sketching, we hope to encourage active participation while we discuss the creative process, sketching techniques, and an important part of sketching, critique. You will also work on exercises and examples to help you expand your sketching and drawing repertoire. Bring your favorite sketching media!
Everyone is welcome -- designers and non-designers alike.
This is a casual, non-sponsored workshop. Feel free to bring snacks or drinks to share |

CHIFOO presents Mobile as Analytics for Life
Roll back

Julie is on an early morning training run. She has done some running over the last year, but this will be her first marathon. She doesnât have a training partner, but a voice in her ear expertly nudges her on, while her mobile device records her pace, her route, and saves it to a training log in the cloud. A friend comments later on Facebook about her commitment, noting that he has trouble running so early in the morning.
Tryouts for the high school soccer team are in three months, but Steve is starting his training now. A device in the midsole of his shoe and in the soccer ball he uses measures direction and acceleration, and compares his data to his peers and to the pros. An app on his mobile device records his statistics, shows him where he is strong and where he is weak, and gives him a training program to elevate his game.
Analytics, the marriage of computer science and statistics, allows us to derive meaning from large sets of data. Historically it has been the domain of business strategy and marketing, used to zero in on patterns which enable strategists to forecast future market behavior and improve outcomes. New mobile technology allows users to collect their own data, connects them to the best science, and does so in a way that is personal, social, and highly targeted. The Nike+ Sensor records running performance, the Adidas miCoach Speed Cell measures multi-directional motion for sports training, the Withings scale and blood pressure monitor helps people monitor their health, and UP by Jawbone measures activity level, sleep cycles, and eating patterns.
How has user-centered design shaped the direction of these new technologies? In this presentation, Jeanne will explore the ways that people have integrated these devices into their lives and discuss whether the technology has followed through on the promise to improve health, performance, and lifestyle.
About the Speaker
Jeanne Turner is a passionate and versatile interaction designer who is dedicated to creating delightful experiences through greater understanding of user needs, goals, and motivations. After earning a BA in Computer Science with a focus on Human-Computer Interaction, sheâs spent the past 7 years using her skills to build both mobile applications and web environments for clients including Ecotrust, Vanderbilt Owen School of Management, Tektronix, Harvard Business School, Starbucks, and Amazon. Jeanne is also an invaluable part of the Portland interaction design community, serving as the leader and co-leader of the local chapter of IxDA since May of 2008.

Topic: Software Estimation
Software estimation is always difficult to do well. Estimation is rarely taught in school and gets little attention in professional training. This presentation, built heavily on material from Steve McConnell, delves into the topic with the goal of improving estimation with a few simple rules of thumb as well as improving the understanding of the culture and politics surrounding estimates that often cause conflicts.
Speaker: Chris Kessel I've been a developer for just shy of 20 years and started with Java shortly before its original 1.0 release. I'm passionate about the craft and maintain an active interest in software history and culture, especially as it impacts best practices. |

Summer Coder's Social
Roll back
| description |
Last December, many of the local software developer User Groups banded together and had a party (instead of the regular meetings). It was know as the <a href="http://pdxgroups.pbwiki.com/2007_December_Coders_Social" rel="nofollow">Winter Coders Social</a> (<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/tags/pdxcoderssocial/" rel="nofollow">few pics</a>). Summer Coder's Social is the outdoor and (hopefully) sunny successor!!!<br />
This will be a very casual geek event with outdoor activities, games and BBQ so be sure to bring the whole family.<br />
Sponsors will provide the basics of Hamburgers and Hotdogs (and Vegan equivilants). Potluck will provide the rest. This is also a BYOB event.<br /><br />
RSVP <a href='http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/869350/'>here</a> then head to the <a href="http://pdxgroups.pbwiki.com/Coders-Summer-Social" rel="nofollow">event site</a> to sign up for the potluck.<br /> |

Winter Coders' Social II
Roll back
| description |
Last December, many of the local software developer User Groups banded together and had a party (instead of the regular meetings). It was known as the Winter Coders Social. In August, we had a Summer Coder's Social as the outdoor and sunny successor!
Now, we're having a second Winter Coders' Social. Good and geeky times will be had by all. Come join us.
Bring yourself, games if you have them, and a dish to share.
Food:
Some beverages will be provided.
Potluck signup: http://tinyurl.com/coders-social-potluck-form
Current potluck list: http://tinyurl.com/coders-social-potluck-list
Fun:
We'll be playing games, like last year, so bring 'em!
There will be a programming competition! Any language welcome, no
particular toolkits or api skills necessary. These'll be problems that
just require thought. If enough of you are interested and bring a
language that you're only vaguely familiar with, we'll have a separate
league for language newbies. Prizes? Bragging rights! Plus a surprise
or two.
Hope to see you there!
P.S.: We will need a cleanup crew immediately following the party; if
you don't have to split right away, we'd appreciate your help. :) |

Come hang out, drink beer, and write code *every* Monday night.
The meetings are extremely informal, and everyone is welcome!
Maybe we'll be in the middle room, maybe in the back room, just keep walking until you see a table full of laptops.
