The goal of the Skolkovo Innovation Centre is "to concentrate international intellectual capital, thereby stimulating the development of break-through projects and technologies." [1] Companies engaged in innovative development are selected to become project participants and are provided with developmental assistance by the Skolkovo Foundation and its partners. The Applied Research Center for Computer Networks (ARCCN) is a non-profit organization within the Skolkovo project focused on creating enabling technologies for the next generation of computer technology. ARCCN’s vision is to develop a world class Russian center specializing in Software Defined Networking (SDN). SDN implements the control plane of network switches and routers in software running on separate servers, "to commoditize network hardware and provide a standard-based application development platform taking much of the features and functionality that exist inside custom proprietary software and driving it into an open SDN space." OpenFlow is an example of SDN. "OpenFlow offers a standard-based Application Programming Interface or API that links an Ethernet switch and a controller. This offers a model in which layer 2 Ethernet switches are low-cost merchant silicon based devices where flows are directed by a centralized controller(s)."[2] ARCCN is building collaborative relationships with international academic, research and commercial organizations. While at Sun Microsystems, she worked with CISSP, a coalition of companies, on changing export controls on encryption. As VP of Engineering at StackSafe, she led the team that developed the StackSafe Test Center, which was named the 2008 ITIL Innovation of the Year. In 2009 Dr. Turbyfill was inducted into the Women in Technology International's (WITI) Hall of Fame for her longstanding commitment to create opportunities for women in technology careers.

The greater Pacific Northwest is home to Ursula K. Le Guin, Kay Kenyon, Jay Lake, Nancy Kress, Brent Weeks, Ted Chiang and Ramona Quimby. Although Ramona isn’t known for her Science Fiction and Fantasy escapades, the rest are, and will be celebrated as part of the Pacific Northwest Reading Series. These free quarterly events provide the Northwest Science Fiction and Fantasy community a chance to gather, network and enjoy readings from local authors. The 2012 series brings exciting authors directly to you through a series of readings held in local venues. After the success of our Portland pilot program, SFWA is adding a new venue in Seattle. Each event starts with notes from the host, a leading local author, who has selected two of their favorite writers to complete the evening’s theme. In turn, each is given time to read from their latest work, interpreting and explaining their concepts and vision. In addition, space is provided for networking and conversation.

In 2009, the studio began the process of digitizing and cataloging the entire archive to provide greater access and utility for the collection.<br> Currently we are developing a unique web application to showcase the archive. The application allows users to navigate the archive’s rich visual content based on a variety of criteria including subject, style, era, color, origin, technique and material among many others. This poses a unique challenge for open software that may not come pre-installed on the platform. With UEFI Secure Boot, though, infrastructure has been put in place to preserve openness, owner choice and control in addition to mitigating concerns of malware targeting the platform. This talk will provide a history of UEFI Secure Boot, an overview of the implementation, deployment practices, and details on the engagement with the open source community. Vincent Zimmer is a Principal Engineer with Intel Corporation. He has been working on various platform, networking, trusted computing and security technologies around EFI since 1999 and platform firmware since 1992. Vincent has spoken in various forums on this topic, co-authored 3 books, 10 papers, and several specifications in this area. Many will break for refreshments at the Lucky Lab NW at 1945 NW Quimby after the meeting The Portland Linux/Unix Group (PLUG) is a group of enthusiasts dedicated to teaching and learning about Linux, Unix and related projects.
