In an interview with USAToday columnist, Steve Strauss, at Pagatim.com, Eric Winquist says that what's most rewarding for him as an entrepreneur is when a customer is successful and he knows that his company has played a role in the process. As a product manager, he was frustrated with some of the enterprise solutions he saw and used his savings to build a beta version of the product. What's unique about him is he turned down outside investment. Meet Eric and find out how he has bootstrapped his way to success.
Two Steps Ahead:
The mantra that James Davies has for his company is "Change is Good." Finding solutions through innovative ways is what drives him. In his interview with Steve Strauss, James says that what kept them going when they started Timbercon 15 years ago was niche knowledge in the data storage game. By staying two steps ahead each time in the fiber optics world, they were able to find solutions for customers. The most gratifying aspect of being an entrepreneur for James is " the freedom to try things, to explore and learn from mistakes."

Rick Wills, Retired CEO, Tektronix and current Oregon Food Bank Board Member, along with Gina Taylor, OFB will give an overview of the OFBâs mission, explain the important contributions they are making, and share how other companies in the area are contributing. You will learn about group volunteer options where your employees can build camaraderie while making a big difference for the more than 240,000 people, per month, who eat meals from emergency food boxes. Thanks to mobile device and social networks, enterprise computing stands at the start of the biggest revolution in computing since the transition to client-server. Tablets and smartphones are not laptops with small screens and no keyboards, yet that is how enterprise IT executives persist in treating them. In fact, to fully grasp the potential of these devices, enterprises will need to re-image every business process and user experience in the enterprise. This will be expensive, but when done correctly, the ROI will indeed kick-ass. This talk will address some of the challenges facing companies in thinking about the social, mobile web and how to approach user experience and business process design to achieve kick-ass ROI.
About the Speaker
Since 2002, Paul Brody (@pbrody) has served as a Partner with IBM Global Business Services and Global Lead, Electronics Industry Strategy Practice, and has led engagements with leading electronics companies in the US, Europe, and Asia Pacific. Brody has worked extensively with business strategy, supply chain management and product life cycle management, including planning and scheduling, logistics, and procurement solutions.
Prior to IBM, he held senior supply chain executive positions at ClearCross and i2 Technologies. He has also been a consultant with McKinsey & Co., primarily in the high-tech electronics sector in the United States and across the Asia Pacific region. Brody began his career at Mobile Telecommunications Services Ltd., where he developed marketing programs for one of Africa’s first mobile cellular systems, turning the company into a national brand name. He holds a B.A. in Economics, and a Certificate in African Studies, from Princeton University. |

Mark Lawler on Why He Loves and Hates Agile
One of our local madmen is coming to talk to AgilePDX at Puppet Labs on February 20 at 6:30p. Having clawed his way up from the ranks of programmer, Mark Lawler now sits on top of 40 agile teams at Cambia Health Solutions (formerly Regence Blue Cross/Blue Shield). Barreling his way through yet another enterprise agile transition the last couple of years, Lawler occasionally shouts out the world what he loves and hates about agile to any of us who are willing to listen. Carrying around the title of Chief Technical Officer for one of the largest employers in the Portland metro area doesn’t slow him down one bit. Come prepared to listen to an agile executive talk about why agile is the best way to drive an organization to thrive.
As Lawler says on his blog, “I love Agile; I also hate Agile. I love how it can free teams to truly delight customers while delivering high quality products on time. I hate how Agile zealots can use the Tower of Agile Babble to confuse the heck out of teams trying Agile on for size. Apache Drill is new Apache incubator project. It's goal is to provide a distributed system for interactive analysis of large-scale datasets. Inspired by Google's Dremel technology, it aims to process trillions of records in seconds. We will cover the goals of Apache Drill, its use cases and how it relates to Hadoop, MongoDB and other large-scale distributed systems. We'll also talk about details of the architecture, points of extensibility, data flow and our first query languages (DrQL and SQL).

Gera Shegalov owns Hadoop MapReduce and Hadoop Core components in MapR's Hadoop Distribution. Prior to MapR, he worked at Oracle in Oracle Database High Availability on (Active) Data Guard, and in Oracle Java Platform Group on JMS backend communication and storage. Gera received Masters and PhD in Computer Science from Saarland University in Saarbruecken, Germany. His research focussed on workflow management, temporal databases, as well as application & database recovery.
