Lets enjoy the Hawthorne street fair as we talk to people about what a great President Jill Stein will make. Hawthorne was a very strong Nader neighborhood 2000, so this should be a community receptive to our message. No experience necessary, If you aren’t an experienced canvaser, I would be happy to train you. So join us, have fun, enjoy the sunny Sunday and get out the vote for Jill!

If you are like us, establishing your presence in meetings, networking events and in other important situations is something you've been wanting to do for a long time! We are ready to get started on that journey and we'd like you to join us!
PDXWIT is partnering with Zapproved and Intel to bring you The Confidence Project's "10 Seconds of You" workshop. The evening will include food, beverages, great people and a workshop that will change how you present and feel about yourself!
The proceeds from this event will support PDXWIT
Agenda
6:00 Check-In/Networking with food and beverages
6:30 Opening Remarks by Monica Enand, CEO of Zapproved
6:40 Workshop beings
8:15 Workshop ends
Workshop Details
“After 10-years, she was an overnight success,” illustrates the point that people rarely reach their victories over night. It takes talent, experience, hard work and leveraging every opportunity and advantage for women to compete for a seat at the table.
Beyond industry knowledge and experience, there are essential skills shared in this Workshop that can help you feel confident introducing yourself at networking events and industry meetings, competing for a promotion or negotiating in the boardroom.
With practice, these skills can represent a meaningful difference in how and when you reach your final destination in your well-planned career. Confidence Project skills are the great equalizer. Age, race, gender, background or financial net worth does not matter. Learn how to use these skills to your advantage in “getting from here to there.”
The 10 Seconds of You© Workshop offers simple, lively and helpful interaction with participantsto practice Introductions with Impact. Each person will craft her specialized 10 Seconds of You© (introducing herself with a hook for people to ask more) and then practice her 10 Seconds and short conversation with others.
Application of Skills Learned
Workshop participants will be able to use their 10 Seconds of You© immediately in both business and social settings. With practice, they will be able to engage more quickly and authentically with others which can boost their confidence.
Skills will include: Creating a strong first impression, introducing yourself with impact, owning your name, creating and practicing your personal 10 Seconds of You©

We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations.
##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm
TBD
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.
#Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!
ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
_ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!_

The Cookie Shop presents: Beyond The Screen with Alysha Naples
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Once upon a time, interaction was three-dimensional and physical— think knobs, buttons and dials. In the last decade or so, we've put touchscreens on nearly everything, digitizing interactions and relegating them to two-dimensional screen space and the purview of interaction and graphic designers.
We are about to undergo another paradigm change in computing and will need to shift expectations around design, materiality and experience. Breaking away from screen-based interactions is not going to be easy, but it will be an opportunity for designers of different disciplines to collaborate in a new and immersive space.
As a young girl, Alysha Naples wanted to be an astronaut, a dinosaur or a Solid Gold dancer. Instead, she studied graphic design, moved to San Francisco (Method, Blurb and HP Labs) and became obsessed with interaction and experience. Until recently, she was Magic Leap’s Senior Director of User Experience and Interaction, a position which felt a lot like she’s was going back to kindergarten and getting a PhD at the same time.
Join us for Beyond the Screen. August 31 at Instrument HQ. Doors open at 5:30pm, talk starts at 6:00pm. |

Does riding a tricycle to meetings make you seem more intelligent? It can if you work in tech.
Join Seattle comedian Bridget Quigg for an evening of laughter as she spins her 11 years at startups into a celebration of the "quirks" of tech culture. Look forward to Quigg's signature mixture of games, stories, and music. Topics include the Agile Method, founders, recruiters, engineers, digital marketers, and outrageous snack options, like bone broth shots.
The show sold out in Seattle and received positive acclaim from Geekwire, NPR, Broadway World, and more. Bring your friends for an evening of fun at The Funhouse Lounge.

Our goal is to bring together and empower current women in tech and encourage others to pursue tech careers to help reduce gender imbalance in the industry and address the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. |

Galois tech talk: Internet of Things: From Small- to Large-Scale Orchestration
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
abstract:
The domain of Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly expanding beyond research and becoming a major industrial market with such stakeholders as major manufacturers of chips and connected objects, and fast-growing operators of low-power wide-area networks. Importantly, this emerging domain is driven by applications that leverage the infrastructure to provide users with innovative, high-value services. Because of this application-centric approach, software development plays a key role to realize the full potential of IoT.
In this talk, we argue that there is a continuum between orchestrating connected objects in the small and in the large, fostering a unified approach to application development. We examine the requirements for orchestrating connected objects and address them with domain-specific design concepts. We then show how to map these design concepts into dedicated programming patterns and runtime mechanisms.
Our work revolves around domain-specific notations integrated into a tool-based design methodology, dedicated to develop IoT applications. We have applied our work across a spectrum of infrastructure sizes; we present examples, ranging from an automated pilot in avionics, to an assisted living platform for the home of seniors, to a parking management system in a smart city.
bio:

SakéOne First Thursday at CENTRL Office
Roll back
| description |

Join us for First Thursday in the Pearl at CENTRL Office. SakéOne will be sampling Oregon Craft Saké as well as Japanese imports.
Swing by for: Ice Cold Sake, Food Pairings, Sake-Inspired Art, A showing of The Birth of Sake, Music, Games, etc. etc. etc!
The best way to appreciate hand-crafted art, is with a hand-crafted beverage in hand. American craft sake to the rescue!
…
SakéOne was founded by a group of folks who simply loved saké and had a vision – to produce world-class sake in the United States. Although sake was traditionally made in Japan, they believed that premium ginjo sake could be produced in the United States. With water as one of sake’s most critical ingredients, the east slope of Oregon’s Coastal Mountains was identified as an ideal water source for its purity. Forest Grove, Oregon, became the home of SakéOne, producer of Momokawa, Moonstone and g saké, America’s most honored sakés! |

Emacs Hack Night
Roll back
| description |

Tonight, our Emacs Hangout will feature a Hack Night, where we can all get together and hack on new or existing projects that members bring. Not sure what this may entail? Check out [these initial thoughts](http://www.howardism.org/Technical/Emacs/hack-night.html) on the subject. Not sure what to hack? We'll begin our evening of hackery with a brief 5-minute trick: This week will demo the organization capabilities of `use-package`.
If you have a little or big project or problem you'd like to solve, bring it, and pair up with someone who may have some experience in that area.
Hope to see you all there! |
