CHIFOO Presents: The Emotion Commotion: 2013 Redux
Roll back

This talk revisits a framework for thinking about design and emotion introduced in 2007. A little over half a decade later, design has advanced to being one of the key differentiators in the business arena—namely for its power to forge strong emotional bonds. In other words, design helps experiences kick ass. How does one measure such a seemingly unquantifiable trait? This talk addresses this question with the second chapter of our story.
The competitive environment for technology is changing, and its impact on experience design is deep: capabilities, features, and functions are no longer enough. Emotional engagement will distinguish successful consumer experiences of the future. Designing in this world requires us to change the way we think about people and products. This presentation provides a brief overview of a counter-intuitive emotional design approach and its application to one of the hallmarks of the next phase in interaction design: Natural User Interface.
About the Speaker
August de los Reyes (@augustdlr) is a designer. He lives in Silicon Valley and works for Samsung. Previously with Microsoft, his teams helped design Windows 8, Surface, and the design language formerly known as Metro. He is a graduate of Harvard and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. |

I am trying to figure out how you guys are preventing spam.
When done I intend to delete this post. I also "scheduled" this six months out so it shouldn't show up in near future listings.
A quick search on google indicates it may involve some upgrade/modification in Rails...?
Step 1) Throwing in some bad keywords:
Via-gra hard-core pus-sy sluds
(the original terms were red-flagged in preview -- so I added the hyphens above, plus t ->d spello in sluds)
Step 2) If Step 1 allows me to post this I may add a nasty URL found in my spam folder.
After successfully posting step 1) I am now adding a casino URL (the original URL in my email spam went through some sort of tiny URL redirect http://lnkd.in/quc3PP )

Galois Tech Talk: Introducing HERMIT: A Plugin for Transforming GHC Core Language Programs
Roll back
| description |

Presented by Andrew Farmer.
The importance of reasoning about and refactoring programs is a central tenet of functional programming. Yet our compilers and development toolchains only provide rudimentary support for these tasks, leaving the programmer to do them by hand. This talk introduces HERMIT, a toolkit enabling informal but systematic transformation of Haskell programs from inside the Glasgow Haskell Compiler's optimization pipeline. With HERMIT, users can experiment with optimizations and equational reasoning, while the tedious heavy lifting of performing the actual transformations is done for them. The talk will explore design choices in HERMIT, demonstrate its use on examples, and seek input for further development and case studies. |

Everyone who's interested in learning about, using, or creating new technologies for self-tracking is invited to join us at our **Quantified Self Show-and-Tell Meetup at the Nike+ Accelerator** (1714 NW Overton St) at 6 pm on Wednesday April 17.
QS Show-and-Tell Meetups feature first-person, personal experiments and experiences in self-tracking, as well as plenty of time for informal conversation and networking. Besides our QS community, we're inviting the startup founders at the Nike+/TechStars Accelerator to join the mix and share their personal stories too. Let me know if you're willing to be one of the presenters. We'll have an agenda up soon.
With two events this month -- the QS Co-Laboratory on April 9, and the QS Show-and-Tell on April 17 -- you can really top up your idea tank with exciting technology developments and interesting personal connections. See you there!

PSU Tech Talk: AltOS — Building Amateur Rocketry Software
Roll back

AltOS — Building Amateur Rocketry Software
Keith Packard
Altus Metrum
[email protected]
Amateur rocketry enthusiasts build rockets somewhere between Estes and
NASA sizes. Operating as sounding rockets, fights range from 1000m to
more than 30km and are generally passively fin stabilized. Two of the
significant challenges are deploying the recovery system components
(generally parachutes) and providing tracking to locate the rocket after
flight. Altus Metrum is a project building hardware and software for
amateur rocketry, and AltOS is the suite of software running in the
rocket avionics and on the ground to track and analyze the flight.
This talk will discuss the unique system challenges presented by
rocketry, including high acceleration and speeds, automatic control of
explosives and other flammable materials and the wide range of technical
skills of the participants. Included will be a presentation of the
hardware components used in the system and how that has driven the
architecture of the AltOS flight software over four years of
development.
About the speaker:
Keith Packard has been developing open source software since 1986, focusing
on the X Window System since 1987, designing and implementing large parts of
the current implementation. He is currently a Principal Engineer with Intel's
Open Source Technology Center. Keith received a Usenix Lifetime Achievement
award in 1999 and sits on the X.org foundation board.

<p><span>Thanks to the Internet and handheld computers like smart phones, it's never been easier for nonprofits, schools, libraries, government programs and other mission-based initiatives to keep volunteers feeling supported, informed and valued. But how do you communicate all you need to without overwhelming volunteers? How do you appeal to the many different communications styles among volunteers? How do you keep your messages from being drowned out from the growing volume of online "noise" and landslide of information and Internet memes? And how do you integrate online communications with your many different other priorities? This lively discussion will explore all this and more!</span></p>
<p><span>Stop by for discussion, networking with the nonprofit tech crowd and refreshments!</span></p>

Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting

PRESENTATIONS
* Markus Roberts: Ruby Hangman: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/pdxruby/OeaZCq4JHUM
* David Celis and Ben Weintraub will talk about interesting performance issues.
* Nic Benders from New Relic, "Get Your Ass to 1.9": Ruby 1.9 has been out for four years, everyone is telling you that it's great, but you've got this *one* production app (or maybe twelve) that is just sooo complicated and it looks like such a hassle to convert.... No more excuses people, it's 2013, let's get this thing done! I gave a version of this at Ruby on Ales last month, but we ran out of time and couldn't do questions. Since PDX Ruby is less formal, I am going to do it shorter, but with Q&A as we go. So bring your pointy sticks and lets have some fun.
* Jonan Scheffler, "Hacking Cognition": This presentation will offer you some immediately actionable steps to improve your cognitive ability and be more efficient with your programming studies. Youâll learn techniques mnemonists use to memorize random pages of binary digits, how your brain physically changes as you learn something new and how simple changes in your daily routine can have a deep impact on your work.
* ...and lots of great group discussions on Ruby-related topics.
<i>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!

Agile PDX Evening Nathaniel Cadwell - Coaching Creatives: New Ideas from Dead Artists
Roll back
| description |

What do a 17th century painter’s workshop, an international photographic cooperative, and an early 20th century design house have in common with a modern software development team? On the surface it may not seem like much, but bringing a group of makers together to work presents special challenges and opportunities, regardless of field.
In this session we’ll explore what worked, and didn’t, for several groups of historical makers. We’ll draw parallels with agile software development teams, and discuss coaching strategies around the examples provided.
Nathaniel Cadwell has over thirteen years of strategic consulting experience in software development, Agile enablement, and change management, helping organizations achieve dramatic improvement in the efficiency of their software delivery. In his current role, Nathaniel is an Agile Coach working closely with software development teams. He has presented, or co-presented, sessions on Agile coaching, Agile portfolio management, and facilitation skills at multiple venues in the United States and abroad.
Details and Pizza:
This event is free. It begins at 6:30 pm with pizza, sponsored by PNSQC (Many thanks to both Puppet Labs and PNSQC for supporting agile in Portland).
The program starts at 7:00 pm.
After the program you're invited to join us for a no-host gathering at a nearby brewpub for further discussion.

How do you protect your IP, minimize employment law risks in Europe, or tackle red-tape and corruption in emerging markets?
To help growing companies create effective expansion plans, Nair & Co. is teaming up with the British American Business Council to host an interactive panel featuring advice from professionals who have successfully taken several companies global and can provide unique insights from their experiences."

⢠Which countries are easiest and hardest to expand into and why;
⢠Steps companies should take to ensure they are truly prepared to expand;
⢠What to keep in mind when hiring employees in foreign countries;
⢠Little-known legal issues that can sidetrack expanding companies;
⢠How to handle accounting and other financial issues;
⢠Communicating between the home office and the foreign office;
⢠And much more... including plenty of time for your questions and networking.

Come hang out, drink beer, and write code *every* Monday night.
The meetings are extremely informal, and everyone is welcome! It is highly suggested that you bring a laptop and a project to work on.
Maybe we'll be in the middle room, maybe in the back room, just keep walking until you see a table full of laptops.

PDX Web & Design: Killing The Angle Bracket
Roll back
| description |
<p>Sooner or later we all have to work with HTML, despite its verbosity. Those of us who claim to love HTML may just be victims of Stockholm Syndrome, both praising yet secretly loathing it.</p>
<p>Basho designer John Newman is making the trek from the swamps of Florida to show us the way. In the modern world of markup preprocessors, these alternative syntaxes allow you to write simpler, cleaner, more concise code in a shorter amount of time. Certain techniques can even allow your team members who may be less-tech-savvy to contribute content directly without forcing you to wire up a WYSIWYG style CMS.</p>
<p>This talk explores great alternatives to plain HTML and CSS, and covers how Basho put these tools together to facilitate a painless, team-oriented approach to building sites and web apps.</p>
<p>Vitamin T will be feeding us pizza and recruiting for several local positions; Webtrends will give us space; and Basho is providing John.</p> |
