AFFORDABLE & OPEN MANUFACTURING AND NETWORKING: GoodEnoughCNC machines
and 1 Gbps / 10 Gbps wireless optical system KORUZA
Join us for this public event where Luka Mustafa, founder of open
hardware Institute IRNAS will present open source open hardware
networking and manufacturing solutions he has been developing together
with his team for the past few years.
KORUZA:
Koruza is first open source wireless optical communication system for
urban environments, connecting locations at up to 150 m distance, which
empowers networks with 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps throughputs unaffected by
radio spectrum saturation to provide last-mile networking without the
need for fiber installation. Now, the version for professional use,
which is bringing fibre-like speeds to ISP subscribers ten times
cheaper, is available for preorder.
A kit version of the system - Koruza 1.0 is also available. This version
of the system is modular and 3D printed, with assembly instructions and
technical documentation published online so that researchers and
everyone else interested can replicate it without a problem, understand
its operation and be able to modify it for their own purpose.
GoodEnoughCNC:
In the process of the development of Koruza we realized we need an open
source baseline manufacturing solution for prototyping and small series
production. That's how we created affordable and versatile CNC solutions
to enable simple production anywhere around the globe and to change how
we manufacture things. GoodEnoughCNC philosophy is to offer effective
digital manufacturing tools that are good enough for most of the
applications an average maker needs. We’ll give you an insight into how
GoodEnoughCNC machines were designed and developed, explaining the
benefits of being effectively open source, using standard components and
publishing documentation with instructions online as well as walk you
through some of the use cases to show how these machines can be used
advantageously to improve lives of individuals and communities around
the world, from Nepal to Principe island.
BIO Luka:
Luka Mustafa is a Shuttleworth Foundation Fellow, working full-time on
wireless optical system KORUZA development at Institute IRNAS Rače in
Slovenia that he founded in 2014, as well as being a PhD student at
University College London. He leads a multidisciplinary team developing
open systems ranging from CNC machines to electronics and fibre optic
systems, promotes and deploys open wireless networks in wlan slovenia
project and manages national and international wireless backbones.
About IRNAS:
At Institute IRNAS Rače we strive to apply the vast scientific knowledge
to everyday reality by creating effective and affordable systems. We
believe in an open-source world and sharing and we aim to empower the
world with technologies that improve lives, let that be an advanced
communication system or a simple everyday utensil. We are non-profit,
rewarding the ones that create, always exploring new projects and ideas.
All our work is published under open-source open-hardware licenses.

Well, it's been a long time since our last meetup so let's celebrate by taking over Coava! :)
For those of you that have not been to one of these meetups the premise is pretty simple. This is a networking event to give Entrepreneurs a safe place to discuss challenges and to provide feedback about how to solve those challenges. It's very informal. So bring lots of business cards and be ready to have fun talking about what you're working on.
I'm looking forward to seeing all of you there! |

Can't We All Just Get Along

Join us on Tuesday, November 1st in downtown Portland for a lively panel of product, project and engineering teams. Our curated pairs are from a range of company sizes and all are prepared to share best practices and give insights on their biggest success and challenge in working together.
Whether it’s Ducks vs. Beavers or cold brew vs. kombucha, all tech companies have different cultures. At the end of the day, any team can learn from a successful collaboration, even when success has been reached through a tough learning lesson. Our brave panelists will share the good and the bad - especially focusing on what fosters loyal co-workers and teams in the ever-changing world of tech.
Questions to be answered during this session:
There is no ‘i’ in team, but what has allowed you to get your work done while still being a team player?
How have collaborative methods been productive for you / your team? What hasn’t?
What is your biggest mistake that you wish you hadn’t had to learn from?
What is the one thing you wish was within your control to change (about the other role / department)?

Join us on Thursday, October 13th in Portland for our discussion on 3D printing and what it means for the future of both manufacturing and development innovation. An esteemed panel of industry experts will share their thoughts on the evolution of 3D printing and what it means for developers.
Speakers include Paul Benning, HP Inc's HP Fellow and Chief Technologist, Shashi Jain, Intel's Corporate Innovation and IoT/3D Printing Manager, and Bob Taylor, HP Inc's Senior Software Architect focused on web service development and deployment for 3D printing. The panel will be moderated by Chris Liddell, Senior Engineering Manager at Apex Clearing Corporation.
Both HP Inc. and Intel have a long history of driving innovation in products and solutions, across the hardware and software industries, and are poised to lead the new wave 3D brings to the future for developers. Audience members will also hear exciting insights on the recently launched hp.io (a new developer's portal) and e-NABLE (a community for 3D printable prosthetics).
Questions to be answered during this session:
What does 3D Printing mean for the future of manufacturing, from each company’s perspective?
What does it look like in two years, five years, ten years
How does 3D printing help drive the future of innovation, and what does it mean for developers

Liftoff! Power up your teams.

"[T]he most powerful thing a leader can do to foster effective collaboration is to create conditions that help members competently manage themselves. The second most powerful thing is to launch the team well.” J. Richard Hackman, “Six Common Misperceptions about Teamwork,” Harvard Business Review, June 07, 2011.
Resource staffing isn’t enough. New product development and operations teams need effective Liftoffs to accelerate their start and put them on the trajectory toward success. It's an unexplored, often ignored, yet critical, Agile practice. Through Liftoff, business sponsors, product managers, and product owners, inform, inspire, and initiate their teams. Team members align their work and make a great beginning.
In this talk, Diana Larsen describes ways you can accomplish Liftoff, including Agile Chartering, with real-life stories about effective teams, teamwork, and delivery.
BIO
Diana Larsen is author of Liftoff 2nd ed.: Start and Sustain Successful Agile Teams; Agile Retrospectives: Making Good Teams Great; Five Rules for Accelerated Learning; and co-originator of the Agile Fluency(TM) Model. A founding partner of FutureWorks Consulting, she leads the practice area for Agile software development, team leadership, and Agile transitions. Diana delivers inspiring conference keynote talks and has contributed as a leader with Agile Alliance, Organization Design Forum, and the Agile Open Initiative. |
