create Calagator::Event 1250464106 COPIOUSLabs TechTalk: CoreData: It's Not That Bad Roll back

description nil COPIOUS is a user-centered digital experience agency. We build digital products with the user at heart and technology in our bones. We recently moved to a new office and now have a large space to host our TechTalks. **About TechTalks:** COPIOUSLabs TechTalks series meets every other Friday at 1pm at the COPIOUS offices. Our talks span artificial intelligence, new programming languages and techniques, computational linguistics, geographic data processing, systems and software architecture, augmented reality, network security, and more as proposed to the Copious engineering team. **About this talk:** Speaker: [Joseph Jaramillo](http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=10975723&locale=en_US&trk=tyah) Every app needs to store data, and developers have lots of options for doing so. Perhaps you're saving JSON or XML to disk. Maybe you're even using custom serialization. What happens when you need to query this data? What about when you have so much data to display that you can't keep it all in memory? The answer is CoreData. In this COPIOUS Tech Talk, Joseph Jaramillo will introduce you to CoreData, the Apple database technology included with iOS and Mac OS X. You'll learn how to use an API to fetch data from a web service, store it in a CoreData database, and query it later. This is a hands on talk and there will be code involved! You are encouraged to bring a Mac loaded with Xcode to follow along. All are welcome to attend. If you have a talk that you'd like to suggest presenting, please email it to [email protected] along with a brief outline of what you'd like to cover.

update Calagator::Event 1250464105 PSU Tech Talk: Text Lack Empathy Roll back

description Have you ever written a nice friendly email and gotten a reply that seems like they read a whole different email? In Open Source communities we write to each other all the time, but we’re not really writing, we’re speaking with our fingers. Text is our primary way to communicate, but text has problems. Speaking conveys subtle emotional cues that as social animals we rely on; text strips them out. A thoughtful correspondent can put those emotions back, but we’re often not thoughtful. This talk is about the special problems of textual communication: mitigating them; ensuring that what you mean to say is what is understood; interpreting messages that seem totally out of whack; and increasing empathic bandwidth. About the author ---------------------- Nóirín Plunkett is a jack of all trades, and a master of several. By day, she works for Eucalyptus Systems, as a geekEnglish translator, and general force multiplier. She's passionate about community, communication, and collaboration. Her open source work epitomizes the saying “if you want something done, ask a busy person”: Nóirín cut her teeth on the httpd documentation project at Apache, but soon started running conferences for the Apache Software Foundation . She was involved in setting up the Community Development project, is Org Admin for the Google Summer of Code (with more than 40 students!), and continues to contribute to projects as diverse as Infrastructure and Incubator. Nóirín was the first woman on the board of the Apache Software Foundation, and continues to sit on the board of the Open Cloud Initiative. She's also an advisor to The Ada Initiative, supporting women in open technology and culture. When she’s not online, Nóirín often found on the dance floor or down at the pub, although she’s also a keen harpist & singer, and an excellent sous chef! create Calagator::Event 1250464104 Cleanweb Hackathon: A call for software developers, designers or innovators Roll back

description nil If the idea of potentially winning $3500 and a client contract while solving environmental issues sounds great to you, come to join the first Cleanweb Hackathon in Portland. The Cleanweb Hackathon in Portland, Oregon kicking off Friday 5/17 at Earth Advantage will bring together software developers, designers and entrepreneurs for a weekend to brainstorm solutions that address global resource constraints. In less than 30 hours, a dozen teams will create apps that tackle energy, waste, water, transportation and other sustainability issues by leveraging web, mobile and social media technologies. Teams will be equipped with datasets, APIs, food and coffee; presenting their prototypes to a select panel of judges on Sunday afternoon. At the Friday night kick-off social, the local organizing team will discuss the project ideas to focus developers on solving key issues given by the city and other public and private sector partners. On Saturday morning, participants’ teams will assemble at Earth Advantage for a briefing on API and datasets before beginning development of their applications. The hackathon will conclude Sunday with teams presenting their apps to investors and infotech industry leaders in the hope of winning the first prize of $3,500. Participants will also get a chance to mingle with the sponsors, judges and press. Presentations and awards session will begin at 3:00 PM PST. The Cleanweb Hackathon Series began in San Francisco in September 2011, which was a sold-out event with over a hundred participants that resulted in fourteen software and mobile applications. Cleanweb later mushroomed into a global movement with community spawning movement in over a dozen cities around North America and Europe and most recently the formation of The Cleanweb Initiative, a new non-profit industry association.

update Calagator::Event 1250464027 Saturday Morning @ Sisters Coffee : Pearl District Hackers Roll back

description This meeting is for fellow coders, hackers, and designers to get together on a weekly/bi-weekly basis to work on their projects side by side with others in the community over a few cups of coffee. These meetups will not be a presentation based format, rather, the vision is a small table in a great coffee shop in the pearl packed with laptops, writing code, formatting comps, but most importantly getting shit done. No sales people or recruiters! All languages welcome. Meet @ the table upstairs. As an alternative to our regular community events at local bars, this meeting is for coders and designers, all skill levels, to get together, share a cup of coffee and get some work done. Just a small table in a great coffee shop in the Pearl packed with laptops, writing code, formatting comps, but most importantly getting shit done. Grab a cup of coffee and meet @ the table upstairs.

description “Where should innovation start?” The majority of business leaders do not recognize the value of IT in innovation.... Meanwhile, leading companies make use of technology trends, including cloud computing, big data, social, and mobile. How does development, design and marketing influence the maturity of innovation? How does one area influence the other two and where do great ideas begin? Join us as we walk through a number of innovative case studies of innovation. Some started with design, moved to development and were later marketed to the masses. Others started with development and marketing, leaving design as an afterthought. The products are interesting, and the individual approaches are fascinating. “Where should innovation start?” The majority of business leaders do not recognize the value of IT in innovation.... update Calagator::Event 1250464090 Hardware Security's Hierarchy of Attacks Roll back

description Presented by Joe FitzPatrick. Generally, there is a very low barrier to entry when it comes to software or network-based attacks due to the fact that actual costs are minimal and most resources are readily available. This does mean that it's generally much easier to attack the software of a system than the hardware, but unfortunately that also leads to overconfidence in, as well as misplaced trust in hardware. There is a clear 'hierarchy of attacks' in the hardware world. There are costs, often significant, involved in acquiring your hardware 'target' which might be damaged or destroyed in the process. There are a number of useful tools that cost anywhere from a few dollars to a few million dollars. I'll give a couple examples of what's possible within budgets of $100, $10,000, and $1,000,000. I'll point out how many capabilities are much more accessible than most assume, and how vulnerable to sub-$100 attacks most of our 'secure' hardware really is. Presented by Joe FitzPatrick.
