update Calagator::Event 1250464400 Galois Tech Talk: The Constrained-Monad Problem Roll back

description Presented by Neil Sculthorpe. In Haskell, there are many data types that would form monads were it not for the presence of type-class constraints on the operations on that data type. This is a frustrating problem in practice, because there is a considerable amount of support and infrastructure for monads that these data types cannot use. This talk will demonstrate that a monadic computation can be restructured into a normal form such that the standard monad class can be used. The technique is not specific to monads --- it can also be applied to other structures, such as applicative functors. One significant use case for this technique is Domain Specific Languages, where it is often desirable to compile a deep embedding of a computation to some other language, which requires restricting the types that can appear in that computation. update Calagator::Event 1250464322 SPIN: Still Programming After All These Years Roll back

description Networking @ 5:30-6:30 PM; Seminar 6:30-7:30 PM Abstract: Anyone who has seen a few generations of computer technology knows that each generation brings in a whole new vocabulary. It seems like the same old thing but with all of the names changed. Why do they do that? It helps us get unstuck. That's the short answer. Each generation brings with it unfamiliar capabilities. It takes serious effort to find application for those capabilities and hiding the good stuff among the familiar just makes doing new things harder. In this presentation I'll describe my own lurch forward over the last two years. The web, which has been stuck in its own way, has busted free. Its a great time to try something new. Some of this is technology, some methodology, and some community. All of it impresses me. Let me tell you why it's important. Bio: Ward Cunningham programs every day at New Relic. He continues to develop the unique data handling capabilities of Federated Wiki, a project rooted in his service as Nike's open-data fellow. Ward co-founded the consultancy, Cunningham & Cunningham, Inc. He has served as CTO at CitizenGlobal and AboutUs, a Director of the Eclipse Foundation, an Architect in Microsoft's Patterns & Practices Group, the Director of R&D at Wyatt Software and as Principle Engineer in the Tektronix Computer Research Laboratory. Ward is well known for his contributions to the developing practice of object-oriented programming, the variation called Extreme Programming, and the communities supported by his WikiWikiWeb. Ward hosts the AgileManifesto.org. He is a founder of the Hillside Group and there created the Pattern Languages of Programs conferences which continues to be held all over the word. You definitely need a laptop, but anything beyond that is up to you! Are we expected to sleep? The venue will be open overnight, but you can choose to sleep or keep working overnight! Please bring a pillow or sleeping bag if you feel that will make you more comfortable. Are there any age requirements? No, the event is open to all currently enrolled students. What languages can we use? There are no restrictions to what tools you can use (other than a few intended to prevent cheating, check the rules). If you use a language which few people know, you will have more difficulty getting help. We'll provide lunch and dinner on Saturday, a midnight snack, and breakfast on Sunday. The cost of food is included in your ticket. Can I go even if I don't know anything? Of course! Part of the fun of a hackathon is figuring out things as you go along. We'll also have some great workshops that you can attend. Or just hang out and have fun! How big are the teams? We suggest 3-6 people per team. 8 is the absolute max. You can be a team of 1. Can I be on multiple teams? Yes. Do I need a group to attend? We'll be forming teams at the event, so you don't need to know anyone beforehand. Just show up! Is it possible to make an app or game in such a short time? Yes! We're constantly amazed by the results of CodeDay events! Check out S.S. Halfling, and Running Blind, both games led by students at Redmond HS in Washington. Are there any more official rules? Check out The Official Rules. How can I contact you? Just email [email protected]

update Calagator::Event 1250464328 PDXScala Monthly Meeting Roll back

description Come join other Scala fans, whether you're a seasoned oldtimer or complete beginner. We'll have open discussions and a variety of presentations and examples. If you have topics you're interested in hearing more about or something you'd like to give a presentation on, please let us know! Also, feel free to bring code you'd like to show off or get input on from the rest of the group. We'll have Tyler Benson from New Relic giving a talk about the recently released support for Play 2. Thomas will also give a bit of a walk through on setting up a new project with SBT oriented for newcomers. As we've been doing for a couple months now, the first hour of tonight's meeting will be oriented towards people who are new to Scala. If you have questions you'd like to ask about general usage, specific libraries, or overall understanding of the ecosystem, we'll be here to help you find your way. For everyone else, we'll have plenty of extra time tonight for any other discussions and topics, so if you have something you'd like to talk about or code you'd like to show, come prepared! We'll have pizza here at 6, so come early if you're hungry.

create Calagator::Event 1250464381 Transition (AKA Change) Management - DAMA PDX (Data Management User Group) Roll back

description nil The DAMA Portland Chapter is dedicated to delivering thought provoking presentations that will make you more successful in your job. In June we take an exciting step away from the hard science topics to explore how to be more effective. How many times have you delivered solutions that were never adopted or fell short in acceptance? If you’ve been around IT and projects long enough, you will know this truth - that success depends on the adoption of new systems, applications etc. by people. The skills that enable delivery are not the same skills that promote acceptance and use. While project management tends to focus on delivery of something, Transition Management (TM) focuses on the people part of solutions. At places like Nike, transition management is taken very seriously and all major projects have a Transition Manager assigned: - Transition Management is a structured approach, and set of tools, to transition individuals, teams, and organizations from a current start to a desired future state - A leadership competency for enabling change within organization - A strategic capability designed to increase change capacity and responsiveness No matter the project or change size, Transition Management should be always a consideration. Ignore TM at your own risk. Transition management is more than just a learning plan. Done correctly, TM is a whole lot more. Nike's Transition Methodology is an evolution of the Bridge's Change Management Model.

create Calagator::Event 1250464380 CHIFOO Presents: Immersive Environments and Advanced Visualization Technologies for Testing New Car Designs Roll back

description nil The Ford Immersive Vehicle Environment (FiVE) applies a variety of real-time, advanced visualization technologies to allow efficient, quick and effective evaluations of vehicle design proposals. Ford is using virtual and augmented reality in a unique and amazing way to simulate a multitude of customer perspectives very early in the development process. Their approach is different…it combines the best of what the virtual and physical worlds have to offer. How did Ford get there? Elizabeth will explain how the need for FiVE was fulfilled, the importance of quantifying the vehicle-owner subjective relationship, and the consideration of human-machine interaction. She will explain the totally awesome VR systems used at Ford and the successes and challenges of virtual reviews. She will relay the practical (and impractical) principles Ford employs regarding conducting virtual assessments, as well as the types of assessments that are used in vehicle development and engineering. Elizabeth will detail how Ford quantifies the emotional connection between you and your car. And she will also provide insight on where gaps exist in the current suite of VR tools, and thoughts on the future of human/computer interaction for vehicle engineering and design. About the Speaker Elizabeth Baron is a Technical Specialist in Virtual Reality and Advanced Visualization at Ford Motor Company. She manages the Ford immersive Vehicle Evaluation (FiVE) Lab in Product Development, and provides immersive virtual reality evaluation systems used for industrial design and product development. She develops and deploys highly realistic immersive systems that address the unique challenges of automotive design, engineering and ergonomics. She has led the development of immersive VR systems that satisfy evaluation criteria for engineering, ergonomics and aesthetic design to allow different disciplines in product development to communicate in a common environment. Elizabeth began her career at Ford in 1988 working as a software developer for Ford’s product design software, later specializing in visualization and solid modeling software. She received her BS in Industrial Technology and Computer Science from Eastern Michigan University. She is also a qualified Six Sigma Academy Black Belt. She is a member of the Human Motion Simulation Consortium at the University of Michigan, the Society of Automotive Engineers, IEEE and ACM.

create Calagator::Event 1250464379 Galois Tech Talk: Non-interference and Binary Correctness of seL4 Roll back

description nil Presented by Gerwin Klein and Thomas Sewell. This talk introduces two new facets that have recently been added to the seL4 formal verification story: a proof the kernel does not leak information between domains, and a proof that the compiled binary matches the expected semantics of the C source code. The first part of the talk presents a new non-interference theorem for seL4, which builds on the earlier function correctness verification. The theorem shows how seL4 can be configured as a static separation kernel with dynamic kernel services within each domain. The binary proof addresses the compiler-correctness assumption of the earlier seL4 proofs by connecting the compiled binary to the refinement chain, thus showing that the seL4 binary used in practice has all of the properties that have been shown of its models. We use the Cambridge ARM model and Magnus Myreen's certifying decompiler, together with a custom correspondence finder for assembly-like programs powered by modern SMT solvers. We cover the previously-verified parts of seL4 as compiled by gcc (4.5.1) at optimisation level 1.
