update Calagator::Event 1250464430 Drupal Users Group Meetup Roll back

description Meetings take place every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6pm in the OpenSourcery offices. This crazy Portland heatwave must be getting to me, because we're totally mixing things up for the July Drupal user group! 1. We've got free pizza thanks to the fine folks at Lullabot & Drupalize.me and free beer & drinks thanks to OpenSourcery. So we'll start off the meetup with 30 minutes of socializing and eating (and even some pinballing!). If you or your company would like to sponsor pizza for future DUGs, drop a comment below. 2. No presenters at this months meetup. We'll be breaking up into teams and competing for 1 hour to make the most awesome, fun, random Drupal site using the mystery set of modules provided. Each site will need building, coding and theming of all levels in order to win, so everyone from the n00best-of-sitebuilders to the most experienced Drupal core contributor can help their team. 3. I know that fame and karma are pretty big motivators in the Drupal community, but in case those aren't enough, we'll also have prizes for the winners. The OReilly people have donated a 3 day pass to OSCon that we'll be giving away along with some other goodies. So remember to bring a laptop and come hungry... for pizza and to win! We'll still be heading to the Lucky Lab NW on Quimby & 19th after the meetup for continued socializing and revelry.

update Calagator::Event 1250464346 Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting: Fluent Refactoring, and more! Roll back

description Thanks to CrowdCompass for hosting Ruby meetings every Tuesday! PRESENTATIONS * Markus Roberts: Ruby Hangman * David Celis and Ben Weintraub talk about interesting performance issues. * Sam Livingston-Gray: Fluent Refactoring > Fluency is "what you can say without having to think about how to say it." Refactoring is a language that describes ways you can make your code better. I want to inspire you to learn more of that language, so you can make your code better without having to think about it. > I'll walk through the process of reworking a 50-line controller action that resists comprehension, let alone refactoring. We'll discover how to tease apart some fiendishly intertwined code, embrace duplication, use dirty tricks to our advantage, and uncover responsibilities that weren't obvious when we started. > NOTE TO PDX.rb: I'll be giving this talk at Lone Star Ruby Conf in a few weeks. This will be a full run-through of the work in progress—slides may be incomplete, points may be muddled, jokes may not be *quite* as funny as they should be, and (time permitting) I'll ask you for feedback and suggestions at the end. > This presentation will be given without warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. Listen at your own risk. ;> ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there! Thanks to CrowdCompass for hosting Ruby meetings every Tuesday! create Calagator::Event 1250464490 Geek Chic: Computer Camp for Girls (grades 5 -7) Roll back

description nil Would you like to animate and program a movie? Construct a robotic pet and direct it to do tricks? Design a video game featuring you and your friends as characters? Join us at Geek Chic where being a computer geek is chic and coding is cool. You will rotate between three classes, taught by women computer scientists, as you learn computer skills while focusing on creative projects. Create an animated film using Alice software, which includes worlds and characters that you can manipulate using programming basics such as loops, lists, and objects. Design and code your own video game using Game Maker. You will learn how to control characters, objects, and outcomes in your game, add more features, and increase the difficulty level. Construct a robotic animal using the Lego Mindstorm system and program it to act like a real pet. Make full use of light sensors, rotation sensors, and touch sensors to make the interaction with the pets as realistic as possible. Out of class activities, both tech and non-tech, will allow you to interact with other campers in games and creative projects. Registration is required and can be completed on our website. Tuition: $399 for the week. description nil Presented by Pat Hickey. At Galois, we're building critical flight control software using new software methods for embedded systems programming. We will show how we used new domain-specific languages which permit low-level hardware manipulation while still providing guarantees of type and memory safety. The flagship application for these new languages is called SMACCMPilot, a clean slate design of quadcopter flight control software built on open-source hardware. This talk will introduce our new software methods and show how we built SMACCMPilot to be high assurance without sacrificing programmer productivity.
