We aim to entertain, educate, elucidate, enlighten, and other things that start with “e.” Be there and be square. One of the greatest sets of geological events to ever have occurred in North America was the Missoula Floods. Occurring as many as 40 times during the last ice age, the floods were caused by waters released from ancient Lake Missoula that scoured the Columbia River basin, carved out the Columbia River Gorge, and swept across at least 16,000 square miles of the Pacific Northwest. At this Nerd Nite, Scott Burns, PhD, http://geology.pdx.edu/node/67, professor of geology and past chair of the Department of Geology at PSU, will focus on the incredible story of discovery and development of the idea of the floods by J Harlen Bretz and will discuss the effect of the floods on the landscape of the Willamette Valley and the area around us. *A note on the suggested cover: Nerd Nite is completely supported by money collected at the door. We are committed to offering education opportunities to adults who want to learn, so if $8 is a hardship for you, please come anyway and donate what you can. _______ Check out Nerd Nite on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nerdniteportland and Meetup http://www.meetup.com/Nerd-Nite-Portland/. When: Tuesday, November 12, 2013, doors at 6:00pm, event at 7:00pm Where: Mission Theater, 1624 NW Glisan, Portland Cost: $8.00 suggested cover at the door, or available online This Nerd Nite will feature just one speaker, the unforgettable Scott Burns! _______ Check out Nerd Nite on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/nerdniteportland and Meetup http://www.meetup.com/Nerd-Nite-Portland/.

description nil Monthly presentation night! Snacks and drinks will be provided by Mozilla. This month: * Ben Acker will share about some awesome drawings and tales of Nodejs within Walmart Labs. * Chris Dickinson will be sharing his talk on Javascript at Urban Airship. * there's still room for a lightning talk! This would be a great opportunity for someone to share a module they've found particularly useful or heinous. Please contact an organizer if you're interested. It will be a nice variety of topics and level of talks. If anyone is interested, we could also take discussions to post-talk drinks nearby. Maybe even hack a little.

description nil The Northwest Regional Women in Computing (NWrWIC) Celebration focuses on empowering and encouraging women to enter the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields, particularly computer science. The conference brings together students from universities and high schools, with industry leaders from the private and public sectors to engage and inspire the next generation of leaders to play an active role in shaping the future of computing and technology. The 2013 conference, to be held in October, is the second annual event. Our mission is to encourage women to pursue and build successful careers in computing and technology by improving their educational experience and engagement with industry leaders. With less than 30% of STEM jobs filled by women, the industry is lacking full representation of the world’s views. This lack of diversity inhibits industry’s innovation potential. Our effort recognizes and empowers women who are part of the computing industry and celebrates all who are supporters of them. If you are the following, then you would want to come: College professionals, industry leaders, Job seekers, STEM/Technology leaders, Thought leaders, Professors, Teachers, High School STEM students(must be accompanied by guardian) Register for an early bird special: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/3872721414?ref=elink Top companies and universities will be present

We will draw from physical theater, butoh, clown, modern dance, and myth. We will cultivate presence, awareness and potency in both our performances and in our lives. We will inspire ourselves to walk our edges, push our limits, and dive deep within ourselves. Through this work we hope to connect with other creative people who can laugh together, work together, and collaborate on future initiatives based upon the foundation we build in these sessions. Jacob is an actor, dancer, clown and stilt performer. He has studied with Lume Theater in Brazil, Smascherati clown theater in Italy, Yumiko Yoshioka of butoh dance company Ten Pen CHii. Jacob has also trained and performed with the International Theater Collective, Berlin- based Grotest Maru, and the Carpet Bag Brigade stilt theater company. Jacob also directed the Slippery Theater Stilt company in Portland, OR and is the current director of the New Cascadia Clown Army.
