Roll back
| description |

Hey map nerds, geo geeks, and the spatially curious: MaptimePDX is having a November meetup, and we want you to come hack with us!
MaptimePDX is a monthly/bi-weekly hack and learn event for the geographically inclined. November's event will be a hack night! Come out and work on your map project, or work on one of the exercises we will have for you to do. If you're brand new to maps and code, we will also have a group of people working on building their first web maps, with lots of people there to help!
**Beginners are very welcome and encouraged to attend! Please bring a laptop if you can.** If you're at all interested in casual mentoring at the event (a.k.a. answering questions or sharing what you do), please shoot us a message on Twitter.
We all use maps every day. Let's learn how to make them even better... together. |

AgilePDX Westside (morning) - : Agile PDX Considers the PMI-ACP
Roll back
| description |

This coming Tuesday the west side Agile PDX group will be holding a round-table on the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner certification recently emerged from the Project Management Institute—the famous purveyors of the PMP certification.
Topics include: What’s the upside and downside of the creation of this new certification? Did we need one? How does it differ from the famous Scrum series (CSM, CSPO, CSP, CSD, CSC, and CST) of which the Certified Scrum Master (CSM) has become a market differentiator for many organizations and individuals in the Portland metro area—and around the world? Will it be an improvement over PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP) certification? What kind of content does it actually cover? Do we want one for our very own—or not?

Please plan to join us Wednesday, November 13 for our monthly Chapter Meeting.
Date: Wednesday, November 13
Time: Check-in 4:30, Speaker at 5:00
Place: Intel - Bldg HF3 - Auditorium
Speaker: Denis Barbini, PhD - Universal Instruments
Topic:
Failure Analysis: Lessons Learned
Manufacturing and Field Reliability With a Focus on Failure Analysis of Assembly Case Studies
When reviewed in conjunction with research, failures provide a unique perspective on design for manufacturability and reliability. This presentation will provide valuable lessons learned from practical experience through discussion of material selection, current electronics research and failure analysis case studies. Design considerations for advanced assembly processes and analytical techniques for materials characterization will also be covered. In addition, a review of lead-free laminate selection and testing procedures will shed some light on the question, âCan your board withstand 9x reflow?â
Members of the SMTA Portland Chapter are encouraged to bring specific questions or examples of surface mount process difficulties to be shared in an open discussion at the end of the presentation.
⢠Major difficulties in lead-free reliability testing
⢠Mixed alloy assembly best practices
⢠ENEPIG intermetallic formation morphologies
⢠PCB plating considerations
⢠Analytical testing techniques
⢠Root causes of production failures
⢠Failure analysis studies â Fine-pitch printing, PoP, 01005 defects and high Tg laminate failures

Participants will not only have the opportunity to bring their ideas to the table, but to engage in direct, powerful and informal discussions on the topics which will shape the socially-driven entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist.
An unconference is a participant-driven meeting, popular among technology and social media-influenced communities, in which information sharing is collaborative and dynamic.
Last year, we had a tremendous experience hosting impact community members and learning with and from folks from Ecotrust, Immix Law, Springboard Innovation, B Labs, Grameen Foundation, Mercy Corps Micro Mentor, p:ear, PSU Impact Entrepreneurs, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Social Venture Partners, Startup America, and many more.
Schedule & Details:
On Monday night (5:30 - 8:00), we will have a kickoff reception at MercyCoprs.
Tuesday will be a full day of sessions, workshops, connecting, discussing, and hacking, held at the Eliot Center from 9:00-5:00.
For more details and updates, visit http://socialventuresociety.org/unconference/.

* What are the tax ramifications for individuals receiving subsidies?
* How do I get the information I need from the CoverOregon Site?
* What are the basic things to consider to make sure I'm protected while not paying more than I need to?
* How do I interpret the details shown on CoverOregon, like understanding whether the deductible covers both drugs and medical services, or is treated separately for each?
Speaker

** Our Nov & Dec 2013 meetings will be at New Relic instead of our usual location, CrowdCompass **
Pre-Meeting Dinner at 6pm: Stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations.
PRESENTATIONS at 7pm
Beer & Snacks at 9pm: After presentations we'll have more socializing time with beer & snacks.
ARRIVING BY BIKE?
Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 28th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the tool booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." Go in there, and ride on up to the 28th floor. You'll easily find the bike parking.
Thanks to New Relic for hosting this month!

If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!

Portland Linux/Unix Group: Samba 4
Roll back
| description |
Brian P. Martin will talk about his early experiences with Samba 4
Samba provides open-source support for the Microsoft file sharing protocol. Version 4 of Samba was released late last year. It represented years of work and a major, some would say massive upgrade to Samba to include the ability to be a fully functional Active Directory server. Given the large scale changes, many people have been avoiding production Samba 4 use while waiting for the bugs to be worked out. Brian Martin has now started migrating production environments to Samba 4 and will discuss his early experiences.
Bio:
Brian Martin is the chief consultant for Martin Consulting Services, Inc. Martin Consulting has provided system administration services in Unix, Linux and Windows systems in the Portland metro area and across the country since 1996. Brian is a frequent attendee at PLUG. His past presentations include VMWare, production grade scripting, disaster recovery experiences, Linux containers, and logical volume management.
Many attendees will break for a social hour at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub NW at 1945 NW Quimby

Some of you might know the ever crafty Sara Collins, we talked her into heading up a Terrarium series for Nov. craft nights at PAZ.
Sara is bringing extra supplies by donation. If you don't have a glass container we will have some extra we got from bins by donation, just let us know so we have enough.
Most of all this will be fun and crafty. So bring your happy face and tiny plants.
If you have old records bring them by, as a few people just hangout and play games listening to records.

Portland Autonomous Zone formed in Jan. 2013 and aims to be a hub for bike fun and DIY sub-culture. It’s a place to create just about anything from welding to recording studio. We have 5 workbenches now (3 in garage, 1 electronic bench, and a sewing bench! Something like a Moose Lodge for makers with focus on bikes. It’s not a for profit business, somebody’s house, or run by a bike club. It’s a members supported space and run by members. Members can go at any hour and turn on an air compressor, cut metal, hammer, or just listen to your music loud while you get bike crafty. We even have a shower, kitchenette, 2 bathrooms, and are close-in. |

[Free] Build your First Mobile App in One Day with HTML5, jQuery, PhoneGap Usergrid - Portland!
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Join us for a free one-day training course to learn everything you need to know to build your first mobile app — with HTML5+PhoneGap+jQuery+Usergrid!
As taken by over 3,000 people in San Francisco, New York, Austin, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Seattle and more!
The classes are completely free (and all the software services we’ll be using are too — most of them are even open-source)
This class will teach you everything you need to build a mobile app for iOS or Android – as well as Windows Phone, Blackberry or a mobile browser. In addition to reviewing important mobile features of HTML5 and Javascript, you will also learn how to use a mobile UI framework (jQuery Mobile), how to add app features with a Backend-as-a-Service (open-source Usergrid) and how to deploy your app to devices natively using PhoneGap.
By the end of the workshop, we will have built a fully-featured app, ready for release on the app store, without having written a single line of server-side code!
Pre-requisites
A laptop: minimum OS requirements are Mac OS X 10.5.8, Windows XP, or any linux that supports JDK6
Basic understanding of HTML CSS and some programming experience (ideally in JavaScript and jQuery, but not necessarily): it may be useful for you to go through the following Codecademy lessons to brush up before you attend: classes 1–3 of the Web course, classes 1–6 of the JavaScript course and classes 1–5 of the jQuery course.
A working install of PhoneGap/Cordova. Please download PhoneGap and complete the “Platform Guide” for your preferred platform (iOS, Android, etc.) ahead of the class.
Schedule
8:30am: Doors open — registration and coffee
Intro HTML5 and Mobile Apps
Building a mobile user interface with jQuery Mobile
Loading live data into your app (Usergrid)
noon: Lunch break (provided by Apigee)
Writing live data from your app
Package and launch your app natively on iOS or Android with PhoneGap
Using advanced features like geolocation
4pm: Q and drinkup! (Beers provided by Apigee.)
About the Instructor
Greg is a Developer Evangelist at Apigee. Greg has been working in the web industry literally since the web was born – he was hand-coding HTML before the table tag was even "invented". His career has taken him around the world, from the early days of desktop publishing, to a start-up in Hamburg, Germany where he helped build one of the first HTML authoring tools, the glory days of the web at Macromedia and finally his role as Principal Evangelist at Adobe prior to joining Apigee. Greg has spoken about web technologies at over 300 industry conferences around the world, as well as being a published author.

For your Boss
You’re sold? Need to convince your boss? Well, just tell him about all the things you’ll get to learn in just one day!
If you’re a web designer, you will learn how to design interfaces for mobile websites and mobile apps quickly, and even how to implement them on your own into working prototypes, allowing your to tackle your company’s mobile projects this year
If you’re a front-end engineer, you will learn how to build mobile applications that look feel like native apps, using the tools you’re already proficient with: HTML, CSS and JavaScript/jQuery
If you’re a native app developer, you will learn another way to build mobile apps, that allows your company to quickly launch projects for multiple platforms (iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, etc.) using the same codebase!
If you’re already an HTML5 or advanced app developer, you will learn how to use a Backend-as-a-service to quickly prototype, deploy and efficiently scale your company’s mobile apps without needing a backend team to keep it running.
If you’re a backend developer, you will learn everything you need to know about the constraints of developing launching mobile apps, what it means for backend architectures, and how large companies with tens of thousands of employees and millions of users manager their data backends for mobile apps
In just one day, you will learn everything you need to build real apps on your own. Past example includes: store locator, employee directory, Yelp-like app, mobile intranet, HR applicant tracker, lunch ordering system, conference app, room reservation system, and many more! Spend one day in this training and you’ll have the tools to tackle any mobile project your boss or customer throws at you.

Note - this meeting is a week earlier than usual due to Thanksgiving.
We've had a speaker change this month. It's a two part presentation - for the first half hour or so Ken Luke will cover a bit more about UICollectionView, and then Michael Buckley will talk about Frank, a testing framework for OS X that he recently ported to iOS. |

Attend TiE Pearl Pitch Club, a series of sessions where you can practice your pitching skills. Network with TiE members, mentors and other entrepreneurs.
TiE Pearl Pitch Club is designed as a supportive environment in which to try out your presentation - in front of a group of peers, including established entrepreneurs, and others just getting their start. Bring your pitches, with or without slides (bring your laptop to plug into the A/V system), and walk away with valuable feedback and coaching.
Following the Pitch Club session we will offer drinks and refreshments at the TiE Pearl Incubator, while we discuss feedback and mingle. |
