Jonathan Evans is the maverick entrepreneur who saw drones before they were cool. As the cofounder of Skyward—a leader in drone operations—and KinectAir, he’s been at the forefront of integrating aerial technology into our everyday world. Jonathan’s knack for spotting opportunities in uncharted territory has made him a pivotal figure in reshaping airspace management and redefining how we capture and use aerial data.
He isn’t just following trends; he’s challenging the status quo, turning complex problems into innovative solutions that literally lift off the ground.
About the Startup Conversations Event
Each month we host a local founder who will give a short presentation about their company. They will focus on how it all got started, where they are today, and their plans for the future including the challenges they face to make their goals happen.
Following the presentation our host, Dave Barcos will dig into the founder's background, the company's story, and other observations. After the interview, we will have an audience Q&A session to help attendees ask direct questions of the presenter.
It has proven to be a great format to catalyze the local founders and the startups in the region. You won't want to miss it.

Build a Cloud Day
Roll back
description |
PLEASE RSVP AT THE WEBSITE!!
Build a Cloud Day" will be dedicated to teaching users how to build and manage a cloud computing environment using free and open source software. The program is designed to expose attendees to the concepts and best practices around deploying cloud computing infrastructure.
Attendees should expect to learn how to deploy a cloud computing environment using CloudStack and other cloud infrastructure tools including those from OpenStack, Puppet Labs and Arista Networks that automate server and network configuration for building highly available cloud computing environments.
Tentative schedule is as follows. [We are consistently adding additional cloud computing experts from the open source community to broaden the program.]
9:00 - 9:15 - Welcome - Mark Hinkle, VP of Community, Cloud.com
We'll kick off the day reviewing the program with attendees and gathering information so we can tailor the program to best address the needs and experience level of the audience.
9:15 - 10:30 - Build Your Cloud - Part I - Cloud.com CloudStack
David Nalley, CloudStack community manager, will give an overview of Cloudstack, an open source Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) software platform available under the GPLv3 license which enables users to build, manage and deploy compute cloud environments. The community edition is based on the latest, leading edge features and bits that the Cloud.com team of engineers are working on and is supported by an open source community.
Using CloudStack a free and open source cloud computing software to build a private cloud. During the training attendees will be instructed on how to install Cloudstack to manage virtual infrastructure in a private cloud computing configuration. At the conclusion of the Build a Private Cloud section users will have the knowledge needed to create a simple private cloud computing environment.
10:30- 12:00 - Build Your Cloud - Part II - OpenStack
OpenStack is a collection of open source technologies delivering a massively scalable cloud operating system. OpenStack is currently developing two interrelated projects: OpenStack Compute and OpenStack Object Storage. OpenStack Compute is software to provision and manage large groups of virtual private servers, and OpenStack Object Storage is software for creating redundant, scalable object storage using clusters of commodity servers to store terabytes or even petabytes of data. OpenStack was founded by Rackspace and NASA, and now has the support of more than 50 organizations building an open cloud standard.
12:00 - 1:00: Lunch
We will break for lunch after the morning session.
1:00 - 2:15 - Automatic Configuration of Your Cloud with Puppet
The shift to cloud-based services has dramatically altered the IT landscape as we know it. Enterprise infrastructure borders have expanded beyond the firewall and now include hosted applications and infrastructure hosted in public and private clouds. Puppet helps DevOps teams meet their common objectives, creating a seamless IT infrastructure across departments, reducing cost and increasing productivity.
This training section will cover deploying cloud infrastructure automatically using Puppet, an open source configuration management and automation tool. The session will cover the following topics:
Configuring Puppet and Puppetmaster
Resource Types and the Resource Abstration Layer
Virtual Resources, Exported Resources and Stored Configs
Best practices for Automated Deployment
2:15 - 3:15 - Building Clouds the Devops Way
Noted cloud blogger, host of the DevOps Cafe podcast and VP of Services for cloud services company DTO solutions, John M. Willis, will explain the DevOps philosphy of rapid, structured deployment of cloud infrastructure using open source tools like Chef, Puppet, Maven, Jenkins and RunDeck.
RunDeck is cross-platform open source software that helps you automate ad-hoc and routine procedures in data center or cloud environments. RunDeck allows you to run tasks on any number of nodes from a web-based or command-line interface. RunDeck also includes other features that make it easy to scale up your scripting efforts including: access control, workflow building, scheduling, logging, and integration with external sources for node and option data. Run Deck is sponsored by DTO Solutions.
3:30 - 4:15 Gluster Petascale Storage for the Cloud - John Mark Walker, Gluster Inc.
GlusterFS is an open source scale-out NAS solution. The software is a powerful and flexible solution that simplifies the task of managing unstructured file data whether you have a few terabytes of storage or multiple petabytes. It’s no secret that unstructured data is growing like crazy, Gluster provides a solutions that scales capacity and performance as you need it and is an ideal fit for an IT environment that is increasingly virtualized and moving to the cloud.
There are two key ways that GlusterFS is beneficial for cloud builders:
1. Storage layer for VMs. If you're deploying Xen or KVM VMs on a private cloud, storing them on GlusterFS gives you the ability to migrate to different hypervisors, suspend and resume quickly - even on another hypervisor, scale out far beyond what other filesystems will allow, and utilize N-way replication for DR and HA
2. Unified storage layer for applications. With GlusterFS 3.3, you will be able to access your application data stores from an object (S3, Swift-style) interface, as well as a traditional POSIX-compatible NAS interface. This unified approach gives developers and admins the ability to access the same data store using a variety of different methods.
In this session, attendees will learn steps for deployment and some common use cases.
4:15 - 5:00 - Hacking Your Data Center Network Switch
Arista EOS™ was designed to provide a foundation for the business needs of next-generation datacenters and cloud networks. EOS is a highly modular software design based on a unique multi-process state sharing architecture that completely separates networking state from the processing itself. This enables fault recovery and incremental software updates on a fine-grain process basis without affecting the state of the system.
5:00 - 6:00 Get Your Code in the Cloud and Your PaaS Over Here - The OpenShift Primer - Grant Shipley
Whether you're a seasoned Java developer looking to start hacking on EE6 or you just wrote your first line of Ruby yesterday, the cloud is turning out to be the perfect environment for developing applications in just about any modern language or framework. There are plenty of clouds and platform-as-a-services to choose from, but where to start?
Join us for an action-packed session where we'll show you how to deploy an application written in the language of your choice - Java, Ruby, PHP, Perl or Python, with the framework of your choice - EE6, CDI, Seam, Spring, Zend, Cake, Rails, Sinatra, PerlDancer or Django to the OpenShift PaaS in just minutes. And without having to rewrite your app to get it to work the way the cloud provider thinks your app should work.
Check the command-line fu of Grant Shipley as they leverage Git to onboard apps onto OpenShift Express in seconds, while also making use of the web browser do the heavy-lifting of provisioning clusters, deploying, monitoring and auto-scaling apps in OpenShift Flex. By the end of this session you'll have multiple applications running in the cloud, guaranteed, or your money back! (Did we mention OpenShift is free-as-in-beer?)
If you want to learn how the OpenShift PaaS can change everything you thought you knew about developing applications in the cloud, this session is for you! |

Abstract
Data Strategies are the cornerstone for driving AI in advanced analytics. Using a pragmatic, agile, and communicative (PAC) approach, organizations can anchor their Data Management priorities with a maturity model, then clearly define and communicate their strategic path forward using a concise strategy canvas.
Session Synopsis
A Pragmatic, Agile, and Communicative approach to defining the What, Who, and When of Data Management to have good data for AI.
Most organizations are living an urgency to get value out of their data. They are jumping directly to implement MDM initiatives, to move to the cloud, or to implement advanced analytics, and now, to adopt AI, without a real understanding of the problems that need to be solved and the priority to tackle them. There's though an increasing awareness of having to manage data in a better way, but there's no clear understanding of the path to follow. Data Strategy is the key element to prioritize and guide resource allocation in the best way. This session presents how to produce Data Strategies using the PAC (Pragmatic, Agile, and Communicable) (Pragmatic, Agile, and Communicable) Data Strategy Method.
Attendees will take away:
The relevance of a Data Management Maturity Model as an anchor for a Data Strategy
The power of a Canvas to communicate Data Strategy
The Data Strategies Framework
The attainability of the Data Strategy PAC Method
Define your Data Strategies with the appropriate stakeholders in a very pragmatic and agile way and communicate them with the power of a Canvas.

Come join us to experience a vast array of games, ranging from party games to middleweight and heavyweight games! We will have over 50 board games available. NedSpace is a large space, featuring 10 private gaming rooms and 3 large common areas each equipped with 1 to 3 tables, accommodating 4 to 8 players per table.
The GameCon and NedSpace communities are very welcoming and a great place to make friends, for new and experienced gamers alike. We can help you find a group to play with when you arrive or let you explore! With the event running from 1 PM to 9 PM (or later!), there's practically no limit to how long the games can run. It's a great place to break out your lengthy, heavier weight games, but also wonderful for playing lots of shorter party games and everything in between.
BEFORE THE EVENT
Join NedSpace's active Discord, where you can chat about the next game night and learn more about NedSpace. You can also schedule games or arrange carpools on the game night channel. On Discord, please make your username your name or nickname, so other members know who you are - it really helps for finding people at the event!
You may want to bring:
board games
snacks to share
weather protection (jacket, umbrella)
water bottle, reusable plate, fork
NAVIGATING GAME NIGHT
Please make a name tag when you arrive, and feel free to grab food & drinks in NedSpace's kitchen. Folks tend to socialize for the first 30 minutes, and new games start every 20-30 minutes.
If you have any questions during the event (including needing help finding a game to play/join), you can ask in the game night channel on Discord or ask one of our hosts (Faris, Lana, Jarod or Ripley)
FOOD INFO
We provide some snacks, drinks, and other food. We encourage you to bring your favorite foods to share as well. If you bring enough for 10-15 people, that's awesome!
GAMES INFO
Join scheduled games on Discord or create your own using /event, bring games (especially ones you can teach), or feel free just to show up and choose a game to play; there are over 50 games here to choose from. You can also see games other attendees bring, chat about your favorites, and more on Discord.

You’re invited to a pop-up coworking day brought to you by the Metro Region Innovation Hub + Oregon Techworks Association. During the event there’ll be coworking areas for togetherness, breakout rooms for private conversations or calls, and of course, a delicious lunch.
Stop by for an hour or two or stay the whole day. But make sure to reserve your spot - seats are limited!
Join us for an interactive discussion on AI:
‘AI: Your Startup’s Competitive Edge’
AI isn’t just another tool—it’s a force multiplier. Join us for a candid, interactive session designed to help startups go beyond the hype and use AI strategically to drive real impact.
Justin Coats from Neesh.ai will share practical AI applications that streamline workflows, empower smarter decisions, and open up new possibilities. More importantly, we’ll explore how AI can take tedious tasks off your team’s plate—freeing them to focus on creativity, strategy, and the big-picture work that moves your business forward.
Whether you're a founder, developer, or business strategist, you'll leave with actionable insights to make AI work for your startup—not the other way around.
Regisration is required. |

PDX Rust Meetup — Spidering Wikipedia Politely In Async Rust
Roll back

[Rescheduled after snow day]
How many pages are reachable from Wikipedia's page on the Rust programming language in two hops? Around 30,000, it turns out, including pages on wheat flour, Welsh orthography, and the zombie apocalypse.
As it turns out, it's super easy to do this exploration using asynchronous Rust code. Wikipedia offers a cute little REST API for querying links, and it's easy to use Serde to generate requests and parse replies. And if you're feeling guilty about flooding a precious public resource with silly API requests, it's also super easy to do rate limiting.
Jim Blandy will show how to wire up Tokio, Reqwest, and Serde to do the spidering, and whip up a mock server for testing using Warp. The techniques shown work nicely for all kinds of REST API scripting, including, say, GitHub.

Please plan to arrive between 6:30 and 7. Due to limitations of the venue, we need to have someone stand outside and let people in, and we'd like them to be able to attend, so the doors will be effectively closed at 7:00, unless you're a PSU student. |

Please join us this Wednesday to hear from Richard Greenwood of Greenwood Mapping who will share insights from his 30-year career, starting as a land surveyor and evolving into a GIS professional specializing in open-source solutions. He has developed and supported more than a dozen County-focused MapServers in Idaho and Wyoming. These online maps are powered by his custom web mapping platform, built on MapServer, OpenLayers, and PostGIS. The maps provide public access to geographic data and legal documents, and are essential tools supporting county tax assessors, treasurers, and clerks in their daily work.
We'll have time for a little show and tell right after so bring your apps or works-in-progress and meet other geo-folk :)
Wednesday 2/19 6:30pm | Hot Lips Pizza @ the Natural Capital Center 721 NW 9th Ave, Portland OR
Please let us know if you'd like to join via Zoom and we can set that up.

My journey with design, activism, and accessibility
Roll back
description |

Portland Design Thinkers is proud to present Pete Denman: My journey with design, activism, and accessibility.
Our leaders have recommended that we approach diversity and inclusion with skepticism. Having spent 30 years in design and being in a wheelchair since shortly after graduating high school 37 years ago, I’ve seen significant changes fueled by people's passion for their needs and goals.
In my talk, I will emphasize the importance of diversity and activism and their influence on new technologies. I’m not your average designer; for the last 20 years, I’ve been at the forefront of emerging technologies in a research lab at Intel, working on innovative products and concepts that are still developing. My expertise spans interaction design, visual design, and user experience validation. I've tackled projects ranging from traditional graphic design to creating the interface that Stephen Hawking used to communicate and operate his computer.
If you're curious to hear about my journey and how passion and activism have informed my work, I invite you to join me for this conversation. |
