create Calagator::Event 1250481269 Data PDX: Semantic Layer Architecture: Top Applications and Implementation Approaches Roll back

description nil Semantic Layer Architecture: Top Applications and Implementation Approaches for Enterprise Data Management (with Real World Examples) Over the last decade, we have seen some of the most exciting innovations emerge within the enterprise knowledge and data management spaces. Those innovations with real staying power have proven to drive business outcomes and prioritize intuitive user engagement. Within this list are a semantic layer (for breaking the silos between knowledge and data) and of course, generative AI (a topic that is often top of mind on today’s strategic roadmaps). Both have one thing in common—they are showing promise in addressing the age-old challenge of unlocking business insights from organizational knowledge and data, without the complexities of expensive data, system, and content migrations. In 2019, Gartner published research emphasizing the end to “a single version of the truth” for data and knowledge management and that by 2026, “active metadata” will power over 50% of BI and analytics tools and solutions to provide a structured and consistent approach to connecting instead of consolidating data. By employing semantic components and standards (through metadata, business glossaries, taxonomy/ontology, and graph solutions), a semantic layer arms organizations with a framework to aggregate and connect siloed data/content, explicitly provide business context for data, and serve as the layer for explainable AI. This session will present case studies that take a deep dive in the technical architecture of a Semantic Layer, exploring the components that enable semantic capabilities, such as metadata management, data catalogs, ontology/knowledge graphs and AI infrastructure. The presentation will emphasize how these components interconnect organizational knowledge and data assets, enhancing systems like recommendation engines and semantic search and explore the top three common approaches we are seeing at play in order to weave this data and knowledge layer into the fabric of enterprise architecture, highlighting the applications and organizational considerations for each. SPEAKERS Lulit Tesfaye is a Partner and the Vice President for Knowledge & Data Services and Engineering at Enterprise Knowledge, LLC., the largest global consultancy dedicated to Knowledge and data management. Lulit brings over 15 years of experience leading global information and data management initiatives, specializing in technologies and integrations. Lulit is most recently focused on employing advanced Enterprise AI, knowledge graphs, and semantic layer capabilities for optimizing enterprise data and information assets. Urmi Majumder is a Principal Architect at Enterprise Knowledge, where she leads system architecture, design, and implementation of a broad range of enterprise solutions. She has 15 years of experience leading the development of technical solutions in support of a wide variety of federal and commercial clients by integrating open-source, SaaS, and COTS tools and establishing the connection between these tools and their business users. Her diverse portfolio includes the design and development of data-centric solutions, including content management systems, record management systems, knowledge portals, search applications, semantic applications, data catalogs, and AI/ML applications, both in the context of new system development and data modernization efforts.

create Calagator::Event 1250481254 PDXPUG: Benchmarking with Benchbase Roll back

description nil Speaker: Paul Jungwirth Benchmarking is an important part of developing database systems like Postgres. For businesses, benchmarking can guide important decisions around selecting a database management system, or evaluate configuration changes. However, while there are many standard benchmarks out there, setting up, configuring, running, and collecting results was left as an exercise to the reader. Benchbase is an open-source benchmarking framework from Carnegie Melon University’s Database Group (https://github.com/cmu-db/benchbase). It helps you configure, run, and collect results from various standard benchmarks. It also provides a framework for authoring your own performance benchmarks, and wiring it up to the batteries-included configuration, running, and results collection provided by it. Paul is going to walk us through Benchbase, and some recent work he has embarked on around creating a benchmark. If you are a veteran of benchmarking, or have never done a benchmark before, this talk is for everyone. Now a bit about Paul. He’s a freelance software developer here in Portland, and has been building applications with Postgres since 2011. Paul has been working on the Postgres project itself. He’s authored many database extensions, and his contributions to Postgres include work on GiST indexes, multiranges, and SQL:2011 application-time features.

create Calagator::Event 1250481252 Portland Retro Gaming Expo Sept 27-29 Roll back

description nil About Us What is the Portland Retro Gaming Expo? Retro Gaming Expo, Inc. is a Portland, Oregon-based 501(c)4 non-profit cooperative organization dedicated to creating awareness of, and appreciation for classic video and arcade games through the presentation of events and conventions that celebrate the historic contribution video games have made and continue to make in popular culture. Our Goals PRGE seeks to continually improve the quality and depth of our events. It is through events like our annual Expo that we will meet our goals: Educate Our primary mission is to educate our visitors on the impact that video games have made on our society. Our main methods for doing this are through hands-on interaction with classic games and by hosting speaking engagemments from important figures from video game history. Preserve The first consumer video games were created over 40 years ago. As years pass and new systems replaced the old, it does not always occur to game manufacturers and owners to preserve examples of their games for the future. PRGE believes that, by demonstrating original game hardware and software in working condition, we provide a clearer example of video game culture through the years and a better experience for our attendees. Inspire Video games bring together multiple disciplines including mathematics, physics, art, music and drama. It is our belief that by highlighting video games of the past, we will inspire the game creators of the future in all of these areas. What is a classic video game? Our loose definition of a classic video game is any from a system released prior to the most recent generation by any game manufacturer. By this definition the Nintendo Wii, XBox 360 and Playstation 3 have moved into the classic realm (replaced by the Wii U, XBoxOne and Playstation 4 respectively). In regard to full-size arcade cabinet games we have, somewhat arbitrarily, chosen games older than 10 years as eligible for classic status. Who is PRGE? PRGE is operated by an all-volunteer board of rabid video game fans. In addition to our board, PRGE is supported by a small army of awesome volunteers, without whom PRGE would not happen. How old is PRGE? Our first event was held in 2006. Diversity and Inclusiveness Policy PRGE believes that diversity and inclusion are key drivers of our goal of educating the public about the history of video games. We welcome attendees regardless of age, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, mental abilities or familial status. Learn more about our committment to inclusiveness by reading our Conduct and Harassment Policy.

Repeats the last Tuesday of every month. Starting September 24th we will be changing venues to Romtoms, on the east side of the bridge at Burnside and 6th St. We hope there will be more room and it will be easier to find the rest of us. description nil Details No agenda, no pitch, no bullshit. As always, come geek out, network, and have a good time. Beers with Engineers is a diverse group of engineers from a variety of fields coming together to share a drink after work, commiserate with like-minded nerds, and learn more about our respective industries. If it's your first time joining us, welcome! We strive to make our meetup welcoming for both newcomers and returning attendees and inclusive for all current or aspiring engineers, especially those who are often underrepresented in the field. See you there!

create Calagator::Event 1250481235 Dorkbot: August Edition Roll back

description nil People doing strange things with electricity! DorkbotPDX is a relaxed, informal show-and-tell for electronic artists, circuit designers, microcontroller programmers, retro computing enthusiasts, video game designers, digital archaeologists, and mod synth gearheads in Portland, Oregon. Bring your electronic wonders, monsters, and works-in-progress for others to see, or come see what others have been working on! Whether it's code or circuits, electronic creativity of all sorts is welcome here. Table space with power will be available for project show-and-tell; we'll have a table for drinks and snacks, feel free to contribute to the communal cache/BYOB. The Free cart is back, take or leave some components (don’t leave TOO much, if you have big stuff, maybe check the Discord/mailing list to see if anyone is interested in taking it first!) Info and links to our Discord and other social channels are at https://dorkbotpdx.org
