description ***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-august-happy-hour-tickets-47928719089] is required to gain entry to this event *** Join us for Happy Hour at Marmoset on August 21st. Transitioning into the tech industry can be scary, intimidating and for some, insurmountable. Since those of us who have been around for a while may have forgotten the struggle, this month we are asking ourselves how we can make space for those who are new. If you are new, we’d love to hear from you how others can help. While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community. An employee of Marmoset will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities. Lynn Krogseng, experienced Full Stack Developer, will tell us about returning to tech after a long absence. Kimberly Embry, BSE intern at Jama, will talk about pivoting into the tech field. During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking: An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director. Table Topics to help break the ice. A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected. Agenda: 4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking 5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers 6:30 p.m. - Event ends Event FAQ: Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms? A: They are gender neutral Q: Is the space ADA accessible? A: Mostly, please let me know if you need the garage doors open for this event upon arrival. University of Portland is sponsoring and bringing the beverages! Q: What is the parking situation? A: We have a small lot behind the building, people are welcome to try there, otherwise there should be ample street parking at that time. Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance? A: You may choose from the patio entry or the door on Lincoln for folks to come in. If it's nice, you'll probably want to use the patio. Q: Is there secured bike parking? A: No Q: Should I consider using public transportation? A: Either Q: Can I bring my dog? A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home. Please note there may be office pets present at this event. Purpose: PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. create Calagator::Event 1250474084 Probabilistic Programming Kickoff meeting Roll back

description nil Probabilistic Programming will be a powerful addition to anyone's AI/ML tool belt and can be particularly useful in low data situations (and you never have enough data), to take advantage of hard learned domain knowledge and to reason under uncertainty. Kind of the opposite of deep learning. But I see them as complementing rather than competing technologies. In this first meeting we will: - get to know each other - discuss our projects, interests and experiences regarding probabilistic programming - get started learning We'll start the first few meetings by going through the free book Bayesian Methods for Hackers by Cameron Davidson-Pilon (link below). Go ahead and read the first few chapters if get a chance before the meeting. There is a slack channel too. I hope you'll join us.

create Calagator::Event 1250474083 AgilePDX: Virtual Pub Lunch on Hiring - What qualities do you hire for? Roll back

description nil Ever struggled to get to a downtown or West side location to join a lunch discussion? Then a virtual "pub lunch" may be the answer! This agile lunch discussion is a collaborate effort between Seattle and Portland agile minds, and we're hoping it won't stop there. The event is held on a zoom conference line. It is modeled after the AgilePDX Downtown Pub Lunch, which is an open round table with discussion topics sourced from the participants. Towards the end of each lunch discussion we will ask for topic suggestions and vote which one to pick for our next meeting. And we'll close out the discussion with a quick review feedback - so we can learn what works and what doesn't. For this kick-off meeting, we will borrow the AgilePDX Downtown Pub Lunch topic about Hiring: What qualities do you hire for? Technical skills, learning attitude, team fit, emotional intelligence,... and to what extent does your search focus on building team diversity? These questions are only the beginning. Join us in this new experiment and connect with the greater community of the Pacific Northwest. Visit our meetup page to RSVP and get the zoom conferencing information: https://www.meetup.com/AgilePDX-User-Group-Portland-Metro/events/252496023/

description nil Join us for coffee/tea or beverage of your choice and fun discussions about how to overcome challenges we face or to share about Agile-inspired and other topics we agree or disagree with. This event is aimed at getting people in the North and NE areas of Portland together to facilitate discussions. It's not exclusive to people that live in the North and NE, just closer to those parts of the city to make it easier to get there. We'll spend the first few minutes gathering discussion ideas, then roll right into the smooth easy cadence of the lively chatter. New to Lean Coffee? It's a great way to have real, focused dialogue and we often discuss matters of agile, lean and such - but anything goes. create Calagator::Event 1250474077 Quantified Self Conference Roll back

description nil <b>What can you learn about yourself using your own data?</b> The Quantified Self conference is where DIY toolmakers, scientists, caregivers and patients, athletes, teachers, and everybody else interested in "self-knowledge through numbers" get together to share their projects and exchange what they'relearning about self-tracking tools and methods. This year we'll have a special focus on learning from our own data both inside and outside of the classroom. Tools that will be discussed include blood assays, home-built environmental monitors, and effective tools for emotional self-assessment. Want to build your own metabolism tracking device? Curious about the effect of circadian rhythms on cholesterol? Interested in genomics, microbiome, fitness, and diet? As always, we'll have two days of first person "show&tell" reports about self-tracking and learning in all these domains - and more. The program is what we call a <i>carefully curated unconference</i>. We look at the projects and ideas proposed by everybody who registers, learn as much as we can, and then craft a series of talks and discussions reflecting the latest knowledge in the QS community. You can get a good look at the style of the meeting by watching some of the talks we've been posting from past conferences at http://quantifiedself.com/. Join us! (And please don't forget to post something about your work in answer to the survey questions when you register.)

update Calagator::Event 1250474069 OWASP Portland Chapter Meeting - SAST and the Bad Human Code Project Roll back

description SAST and the Bad Human Code Project: Static application security testing (SAST) is the automated analysis of source code both in its text and compiled forms. Lint is considered to be one of the first tools to analyze source code and this year marks its 40th anniversary. Even though it wasn't explicitly searching for security vulnerabilities back then, it did flag suspicious constructs. Today there are a myriad of tools to choose from both open source and commercial. We did a comparative analysis of scanners specifically focused on web application vulnerabilities. We then turned our attention to finding additional ways to aggregate and correlate data from other sources such as git logs, code complexity analyzers and even a roster of students who completed a secure coding class. We wanted to go beyond just triaging in isolation the vulnerable code snippets reported by the SAST scanners. People write the code so why not use these added data features in an attempt to build a predictive vulnerability model if possible. We are not there yet but learned many things along the way. We also want to call attention to a new open source initiative called The Bad Human Code Project. We need people to contribute intentionally vulnerable code snippets in as many programming languages as possible. Furthermore, we encourage folks to scan this project's repository and upload the results so others can review them for their SAST needs. Speaker's Bio: John L. Whiteman is a web application security engineer at Oregon Health and Science University. He builds security tools and teaches a hands-on secure coding class to developers, researchers and anyone else interested in protecting data at the institution. He previously worked as a security researcher for Intel's Open Source Technology Center. John recently completed a Master of Computer Science at Georgia Institute of Technology specializing in Interactive Intelligence. He loves talking with like-minded people who are interested in building the next generation of security controls using technologies such as machine learning and AI.
