Roll back
| description |

Science on Tap is a science lecture series where you can sit back, enjoy a pint, and laugh while you learn. You don’t have to be a science geek to have fun—all you need is a thirst for knowledge!
LOCATION: Clinton Street Theater, 2522 SE Clinton Street, Portland, Ore.
COST: $8 online advance tickets, $10* suggested cover at the door
DESCRIPTION:
On October 31, 2011, the world’s population reached 7 billion, 2 years ahead of projections by the United Nations. High birth rates are associated with developing countries where access to family planning services are limited. Inadequate contraceptive options and accessibility are also issues in the U.S. where ~50% of all pregnancies are unintended. At this Science on Tap, Jon Hennebold, PhD, Associate Scientist in the Division of Reproductive & Developmental Sciences at OHSU, will talk about research toward developing effective and safe contraceptive methods for couples seeking family planning options. (World Population Clock)

July PADNUG: Hacking Sonos with .Net
Roll back
| description |

Presenter: Paul Fryer, Software Architect at Fiserv
Paul started buying Sonos speakers for his home a couple months ago to get around the need to run wires for his home stereo. He was fascinated by the music streaming system, mainly the software used to synchronize the playing of music across multiple devices. So he started peeking under the hood to see how it all worked and if he could possibly learn to control it with custom code.
Paul ended up reverse engineering Sonos and in the process learned about the Upnp protocol. He eventually created a C# library that can be used to turn any device into a node on the Sonos network.
But Paul didn't stop there. He also added Azure Event Hub for cloud processing and Akka.Net to allow for high speed parallel event processing. And all this deployed on a raspberry pi!
Paul will have a live demos and plenty of code. This will be the perfect follow on presentation to Jeremy Fosters talk on the "Internet of Things".

We'll get back to having speakers in September.

Implementing Data Management Strategy through Data Governance and Data Quality Process - DAMA July 2015
Roll back
| description |
Fellow Lovers of Data, join me for this great opportunity for face-to-face education. For more information and to register, go to damapdx.org.
<h3>What you will learn:</h3>
- What is Data management strategy, data governance and data quality process?
- What is the relationships amongst them?
- How to begin developing unambiguous practices to maintain organization data assets.
Date: Tuesday July 21. Location: Downtown Portland. Time: 8:30 to 11:30am
Free for members and employees of corporate members. $15 for non-members to cover refreshments and speaker travel costs. $5 for students with valid ID.
The Portland Data Management user group (DAMAPDX.org) is dedicated to delivering thought provoking, data-centric presentations that will make you more successful as a data professional. We are volunteer-run organization serving our local data community since the 1980s.
<h3>Abstract:</h3>
Data management strategy describes what, why and when to manage an organization’s data assets. While data management functions describe where, who and how these assets will be managed, without data management strategy the data management program is rudderless. Without data management functions the data management program is haphazard, and without effective communication the data management program is obscured. These three process are, in essence, the “Locus of Cultural Change” - challenges to As–Is accountabilities, decisions and habits. It is important to know, how the data governance and data quality process simplifies the implementation of this cultural change and assists in implementing data management strategy. This presentation will walk through the process of developing data governance and data quality practices to effectively implement data management strategy.
<h3> About the Speaker: </h3>
Sanjay Shirude is a practitioner, consultant, and educator in the field of Business Information and Technology Integration. He brings a simplified and balanced perspective to transforming data into integrated intelligent impressions through a career of more than twenty five (25) years, encompassing both business leadership and technical roles. Sanjay now focuses on management strategies, systems integration, best practices and training as keys to simplifying application automation and data integration.
Sanjay is a recognized international speaker. His consulting and mentoring practice focuses on areas such as Data Governance, Enterprise Data Warehousing, Master Data Management (MDM), applied Business Intelligence architecture/analytics, Data Maturity Model, and application of yogic techniques to data management. Sanjay has served as executive board member for DAMA-I, DAMA-PS, and NCMA South Sound Chapter. Sanjay is co-author and contributor to the Data Management Body of Knowledge-II (DMBOK-II). Sanjay holds a Ph.D. in Information Management; Masters in Statistics, Masters in Management and PMP, CDMP, CBIP, and Enterprise Data Management Expert (from CMMI) Certifications.

It is important to know, how the data governance and data quality process simplifies the implementation of this cultural change and assists in implementing data management strategy. This presentation will walk through the process of developing data governance and data quality practices to effectively implement data management strategy.

"No talks. You may opt to take up to 60 seconds to complain about Big Data. One paper per month, no obligation to read it."
We'll start by letting anyone who wants to take up to a minute to tell us what they've been doing with data lately.
This month's paper is [Gaussian Process Latent Variable Models for
Visualisation of High Dimensional Data](http://papers.nips.cc/paper/2540-gaussian-process-latent-variable-models-for-visualisation-of-high-dimensional-data.pdf) by Lawrence. Read it or don't - the goal is just to have something to start conversations. "Did you read the paper?" will do nicely.
Mention @PDXBigData on Twitter with the link to the full paper to suggest papers for future sessions.
There will be food. |

Elixir Games PDX
Roll back
| description |

Last time we looked at Supervisor hierarchies, and unintentionally on my part almost everyone picked up the GenServer behavior as a component of their solution. Damnable misleading documentation! However that prompted a further conversation about GenServers and other components of OTP (the Open Telecom Platform). In the spirit of learning and disambiguating things we'll take a deeper look at some of these architectural patterns in Elixir and how they can help us better organize our projects and design better systems.
For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike.
If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches.
Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns.
If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them.
Food and drinks will be provided. There will also be small desk fodder prizes for the winning team.
Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go.

Special thanks to my friends Jeff Weiss and Puppet Labs, ‘the leader in IT automation’, for hosting us. |

En-Lightning Talks

<h3>Talks start at 6:30pm</h3>
<h3>Our Topic - ALL THE TOPICS!</h3>
For our July meeting we are looking for people in the community who have something to say. So we are opening this up to have you, the people who are involved with Refresh, come out and give a lightning talk, about 5 minutes, on a topic of your choosing.
So, do you have something you want to say? Got an idea for something to share in 5 minutes? <a href="http://rfrshpdx.org/en-lightning-talks/">Fill out the form on the site</a> and let us know your idea and we'll let you know if you are in.
A few details to help you out:
<ul>
<li>The meet up will occur on July 15, 2015 at 6:30 pm at Idealist.</li>
<li>We are looking for talks in the area of the web, design, working together, and more, so just let use know.</li>
</ul>
Other things to consider:
<ul>
<li>This isn't an opportunity to pitch your product or service.</li>
<li>Depending on how many people step forward to speak, we may have to say no to your (likely) awesome idea.</li>
<li>
<a href="http://rfrshpdx.org/code-conduct/">The Code of Conduct</a> applies. As usual.</li>

Galois tech talk: An Overview of Emerging Cybersecurity Policy and Law
Roll back
| description |

<b>abstract:</b>
Why is cybersecurity such a hard problem? The US government, its citizens, and the organizations that write software are all on the same team, but in many cases, our interests are just not aligned. For instance, there have been endless political and social disagreements about the best way to share cyber threat intelligence without sacrificing consumer privacy.
It’s these competing concerns that are the kink in our collective armor and that’s what our adversaries exploit, day-in and day-out.
In this talk, Isaac will present the high-level strategic concerns and challenges in the cybersecurity industry, how those challenges interact with emerging policy and law, and how those policies will impact you.
<b>bio:</b>
Isaac is a security researcher at Galois where he has lead authentication and collaboration projects for the DoD and IC. Isaac earned his master’s degree in Cybersecurity from the University of Maryland, University College, and his B.S. in Computer Science from Ohio State University. In 2013, Isaac founded Tozny, a Galois spin-off company aimed at solving the password conundrum. Easier and more secure than passwords, Tozny replaces passwords with an easy-to-use cryptographic key on a user’s mobile phone. |
