update Calagator::Event 1250468544 Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting Roll back

description We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. # PRESENTATIONS at 7pm ### # After presentations we'll have more socializing time. # Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month! # ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking. <em>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there! </em> We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. # PRESENTATIONS at 7pm ### Jason Clark: Testing the Multiverse It’s a basic principle of testing that minimizing dependencies will make you happier, faster, and more productive. But what happens when you can’t? If your code plugs into or extends another gem, comfortable isolation might be out of the question. Stubbing and careful design can carry you a ways, but eventually you need to actually test your code against those gems you’re building on. Luckily, there are ways to reduce this pain. We’ll dig deep on creating a simple environment to check your work against multiple dependencies. We’ll see patterns that help avoid pulling your hair out when those dependencies change. We’ll even search around the raw edges, examining how to verify what your code does when it lands in an environment you haven’t tested. There’s a multitude of gems out there to build on. Let’s see how we can test with them! ### Lightning Talks ⚡️ There will be a whiteboard to sign up on arrival (first come first serve). # After presentations we'll have more socializing time. # Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month! # ARRIVING BY BIKE? create Calagator::Event 1250468981 PDXRust is back! Roll back

description nil Are you a Rust expert? Have you played with Rust a bit and told yourself you really should write more code in it, but never made the time? Do you just like learning about cool new programming languages? If any of these apply to you, come to the PDXRust meetup to learn more and meet others with similar interests! We've tentatively scheduled the meetup for the first Wednesday of every month, from 6-7pm. September's meeting will be at Mozilla's Portland space. What will happen at the meetup? Good question! That's largely up to attendees: What do *you* think would help you level up your Rust skills most effectively? Current ideas include talks from crate and product authors explaining how and why they implemented their projects in Rust, lightning talks about whatever interesting Rust-related things you've learned since the last meeting, peer code review time, and of course plain old hacking sessions to sit down and work on your Rust project in a room full of people who can help you make sense of the compiler errors that it generates. Join us in #pdxrust on irc.freenode.net (http://webchat.freenode.net/) with any feedback about what you'd like to see! Alternately, drop your questions and ideas into https://etherpad.mozilla.org/pdxrust-September2015ideas . Remember that Rust's Code of Conduct applies to this event. Logistics: Parking near the building can be scarce. The Mozilla office is close to the 11th&Couch stop and 10th&Couch stop on the NS streetcar line, and within walking distance of several bus lines. Covered bike parking is available in the courtyard that you cross to get to Mozilla's building, across from the Peet's Coffee and Tea seating area. description Snowdrift.coop is a volunteer-built non-profit community project focused on a new sustainable matching system to coordinate the global community in better funding shareable freely-licensed works. This is the second local Portland meetup. The community includes people on many continents across the globe, but we have a strong Portland foundation with one of the co-founders, the lead developer, and several active volunteers and supporters in the area. The Snowdrift.coop platform uses the Yesod web framework written in Haskell. Other technologies and relevant work includes basic HTML/CSS/JavaScript and general design, organizing, and other non-technical tasks. At this meetup, we'll mostly discuss the project overall status, strategy, any other casual chat, planning, and organizing. We'll also focus on just folks getting to know each other as local Portlanders involved in the project. Complete newcomers are totally welcome, no particular experience or skills needed to get involved. update Calagator::Event 1250468977 Think & Drink with Genevieve Bell Roll back

description Oregon Humanities’ 2015 Think & Drink series concludes with a conversation with cultural anthropologist Genevieve Bell, vice president of Intel’s corporate strategy office, about how technologies affect our relationships with time, space, and each other. As a social scientist in a corporation of engineers, Bell travels the world studying how people use technology in their homes and in public and uses that knowledge to help shape technologies of the future. This work has taken some unusual directions. Bell and her Hillsboro-based team have cataloged the contents of strangers’ cars to better understand how people use technology on the move, equipped laptop computers with outward-facing screens to encourage people to talk to one another in public spaces, and developed a personal robot that can run apps like a smart phone. The connecting thread of all her work, as Bell puts it, is “the intersection of tech and culture.” Think & Drink sparks provocative conversations about big ideas. update Calagator::Event 1250468971 Ruby Book Club Roll back

description Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers! We are starting a new book [Metaprogramming Ruby 2: Program Like the Ruby Pros](https://pragprog.com/book/ppmetr2/metaprogramming-ruby-2) by Paolo Perrotta. This week we will discuss Chapter 9-10. Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it. Pizza will be provided! Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. create Calagator::Event 1250468971 Ruby Book Club Roll back

description nil Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. Pizza will be provided!

update Calagator::Event 1250468966 Dynamics of Status, Rank, Power, Esteem: A practical workshop on effective collaboration and leadership Roll back

description Hello!! We're thrilled to announce a groundbreaking new training in status and leadership coming to Portland! Come for a 1-day intro to this work, or stay for both days and explore how the model translates to cooperative team work. Everyone experiences the politics of power and status. But in our everyday lives, we’re often unaware of the underlying forces at play. In this workshop, facilitators Simo Routarinne and Barbara Tint introduce four key elements for understanding power dynamics in interpersonal and intergroup relations. These four elements operate simultaneously, persistently and often unconsciously in our daily interactions. Using experiential methods, participants will work together to learn about these processes, and will be coached on how to navigate them more effectively. This workshop is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to explore the application of these concepts to a wide range of social and organizational arenas. Day 1: Interactive Dynamics of Power, Status, Rank and Esteem Goals for Day 1 include: • Develop more insight and choice about the gap between your intentions and their impact • Identify the difference and connection between intentional and unintentional influence • Recognize different forms of power and how they impact social and organizational dynamics - including visible and invisible forms of power • Learn about your natural status patterns and your default comfort zones, and increase your range of choice and flexibility in these processes • Build awareness, authenticity and empathy in communication; explore how you and others show up in social and organizational dynamics • Maximize your own sense of personal agency and efficacy in making constructive change • Understand these processes as they relate to social constructs such as gender, culture and class This workshop introduces a new model for understanding power dynamics. The training will include theory, interactive role plays and group activities, experiential methods such as improvisational activities, experimentation with status choices, and exploration of power differentials. Debrief and reflection deepen the awareness and application of these concepts, and provide greater context for understanding one’s experiences in social and organizational settings. Day 2: Navigating Interactive Power Dynamics in Fluid Organizational Hierarchies Do you regularly collaborate with others? Are you a consultant or project lead? Do you work in an environment where the organizational boundaries are blurred? Navigating Power Dynamics will give you insights and strategies to be a more effective facilitator and leader, regardless of your organizational position. Using similar methods as in Day 1, experiential exercises will draw from scenarios related to participants’ own contexts. Debriefs will refocus on more practical and professional applications of the model. Going deeper into the work, Simo and Barbara will show you how to put the framework into action in your workplace for increased collaboration, creativity and productivity. Goals for Day 2 include: • Integrate and mobilize differing forms of individual and team power for more effective multidisciplinary, agile teams across organizational silos • Learn how to cultivate organic and fluid leadership and greater collaboration in the absence of rank and role • Understand how information flow in organizations is affected with status behavior and use of power • Leverage interventions to increase productivity within flat or fluid organizational structures • Improve individual and group performance in complex, volatile and chaotic environments We look forward to working and learning and playing with you. Although status work is profound, our process is playful, entertaining and fun. We believe that learning happens best when participants are relaxed, present, and engaged. Be prepared for laughter and delight. Hello!! We're thrilled to announce a groundbreaking new training in status and leadership coming to Portland! Whether ’tis nobler for us to implement an outrageously cool feature or take arms against a sea of bugs, the question we will address is, “What happens when a whole bunch of techies go WILD on source code that helps people to have fun and bike?” Of course, we are talking about the Shift Calendar. For those of you that don’t know, Portland is a leader among North American cities in that it has this website that crowdsources bike social rides and allows anybody to find them. The Shift Calendar is used to organize Pedalpalooza and many other fun bike events throughout the year, and other cities are using its source code to make their own! However, the source code for the Shift Calendar is somewhat stuck in 2008. The developer who created and has been maintaining it hasn’t had time to make significant improvements. Today, the site gets between 7,000 to 30,000 unique visitors per month. It plays an important role for the bike community, but has lost visitors over the years. description nil We are discussing business formation this week. The type of business organization you pick affects how investors see you, how your profits are taxed, and how much liability is passed through to the founders. I'll spend a few minutes giving the legal perspective of the different types of business entities as well as some tax planning considerations. I've personally run each type of business entity over the years for my ventures. I'll give my personal opinions on how they work in reality. I look forward to hearing your thoughts, too.

description nil <h2>Doors at 6pm, Talk at 6:30pm</h2> Please visit the site to RSVP. <h3>Our Topic</h3> Over the years, the internet has had many a debate over unicorns, aka designers that code. In what capacity do they exist? Should more people try to become unicorns? What does it take to be a designer/developer? Despite what the descriptor might imply, being a unicorn isn’t magic – it’s work. Whether you’re starting a career in design, already designing and coding all the time, or hiring, you’ll have to make decisions about what to prioritize. So rather than perpetuating unicorn myths, let’s talk about what it’s like to jump between two disciplines and what makes one designer better than another. <h3>Our speaker, Elea Chang</h3> Elea Chang is a Bay-Area-native-turned-Portlander who designs for the web and thinks about usability. Previously, she worked for Upworthy, Idealist, and OkCupid Labs. Recently, Elea has written pieces for Model View Culture and The Pastry Box, and is putting together Affect, a conference on the intersection of design and social good.
