<p>Women Who Code Portland and LaunchCode are thrilled to present a cross-country online series focused on women in tech exchanging stories, building connections, and supporting each other in their careers. The series will be called "Tech Stories: Women Sharing Their Journeys" and it will take place the fourth Tuesday of the month.</p> <p>Each session will feature a conversation with a woman in a senior tech role. Our speakers will talk openly about their current role, their journey, and what their day-to-day work lives are like. We will alternate speakers from the Portland and St Louis communities.</p> <p>Link to join the Zoom event: <a href="https://zoom.us/j/4266077134" class="linkified">https://zoom.us/j/4266077134</a>.</p> <p>Schedule</p> <p>4:00 – 4:05 PM – Intros from WWCode Portland and LaunchCode<br>4:05 – 4:25 PM – Marion shares her tech journey<br>4:25 – 4:45 PM – Q&A from the audience</p> <p>Our Speaker</p> <p>Marion Marschalek is a former Malware Analyst and Reverse Engineer who recently started work at Intel in order to conquer the field of low level security research, where she nowadays spends an unusual amount of time looking at compiler source code. She has spoken at all the conferences and such, and seen all the things, and keeps eagerly seeking more wisdom. She is proud member of the Blackhat review board family, and has been mentioned by Forbes in their 30under30 list for technologists in Europe in 2016. Also, she runs a series of free reverse engineering bootcamps for women titled BlackHoodie, because the world needs more researcherettes.</p> <p>About Women Who Code</p> <p>We are a global nonprofit dedicated to inspiring women to excel in technology careers. Our events offer study groups, technical workshops, hackathons, networking events, panel discussions, lightning talks, and social events featuring influential tech industry experts, innovators, and investors. We help you build the skills you need to raise your professional profile and achieve greater career success. Current and aspiring coders are welcome.</p> <p>Code of Conduct</p> <p>WWCode is an inclusive community, dedicated to providing an empowering experience for everyone who participates in or supports our community, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, ability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, socioeconomic status, caste or creed. Dorkbot Workshop: Linux Audio and Music Making
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Interested in making music on Linux? Ever wanted to customize your own interface and workflow in your music making? Use your phone to do some mobile EQ-ing a venue, or completely repurpose a midi controller?
In this introductory workshop, we will explore different ways of interfacing with Linux-based audio applications in order to optimize modularity/customizability in an accessible fashion - this class is open to all levels, even if you are brand new to Linux!
I will demonstrate how users can use OSC (Open Sound Control, an alternative and complement to MIDI) to communicate between different programs such as Sooperlooper, Puredata (PD), Ardour, etc. We will utilize open-stage-control to play with how you can make your own GUI in an easy way. We will also glimpse at integrating some modules from automatonism in PD, which should feel familiar for synth lovers. I recommend installing and playing around with automatonism in PD (or another flavor of PD such as purrdata ) if you get the chance beforehand!
A Raspberry Pi or Linux laptop will be sufficient for this class, but you will probably want to use a usb sound card or an audio hat unless youdon't mind lots of cracks and pops! We will try to have as many computers available as we can on hand. |

***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-technology-pdxwit-cryptocurrency-exploring-the-potential-tickets-58605096421] is required to gain entry to this event ***
The cryptocurrency bear market of 2018 saw both Ethereum and Bitcoin tokens lose more than 80% of their peak value, but that doesn’t mean development has slowed. Ignoring the market and speculation of crypto tokens, let's explore how these crypto tokens, notably Ethereum, have improved! Join Scott Bigelow, VP of Engineering at Amberdata (a blockchain data company) in an interactive exploration. He’ll share what cryptocurrencies, like Ethereum, are capable above, aside from being bought, sold, and transferred. This session will discuss topics such as "stable" coins, cross-chain bridges, games, hardware wallets, and more.
Agenda:
5:30 pm – Doors open / Networking
6:00 pm - Presentation / Q & A
7:00pm - Networking
7:30 pm - Event ends
Event FAQ
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: Yes.
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: Yes.
Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?
A: Yes.
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: We do not have on-site parking. There is usually plenty of street parking.
Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance?
A: No.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: We have a bike room on our floor for approximately 10 bikes; if this gets full the building has parking on the 3rd floor. This is indoor parking with lockers. When parking here, it is like parking on the street. There is not someone monitoring this area.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: There is a trolley that comes past our building, but it's by no means necessary.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No. We ask that you leave your furry friend at home.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

The IndieWeb movement is a global community that is building an open set of principles and methods that empower people to take back ownership of identity and data instead of sharecropping on 3rd party websites.
Join us in downtown Portland for two days of a BarCamp-style gathering of web creators building and sharing open web technologies to empower users to own their own identities & content, and advance the state of the indie web!
You’ll learn about ways to empower yourself to own your data, create and publish content on your own site, and only optionally syndicate to third-party silos. Along the way you’ll get a solid grounding in the history and future of domain ownership, Microformats, IndieAuth, Webmention, Micropub and more! |

We will be holding the next PIE Demo Day on Thursday, March 14, 2019. Because that's Pi Day. And that only makes sense. And we'll be hosting it at our biggest venue yet, the Aladdin Theater in southeast Portland. As always, we'll be livestreaming the event so folks around the world can take part.
So if you're interested in attending, please RSVP at your earliest convenience.
The event is free. Childcare will be provided.

<blockquote>
“[John Dewey] thought of <b>technology as inquiry</b> into techniques, tools, and artifacts. And he thought that techniques are among the habits that are necessary to the continuance and growth of human life. He therefore thought that the major human problem was improving intelligence, which he identified with technology. And this means no more or less than developing better and more productive methods of inquiry into our techniques, our tools, and our artifacts. […] what are commonly called the ‘theoretical sciences’ such as chemistry and biology are no less cases of this type of activity than what are commonly called ‘material technologies’ such as mechanical engineering and crop science. Theoretical knowing, such as that involved in mathematics, is no less a case of technological activity than is the type of knowing that is involved with concrete, practical outcomes such as building bridges. Because the theoretical is also artifactual, even what is sometimes called ‘pure research’ is a type of technology.”<br>—Larry Hickman, 2009</blockquote> |

Economic vitality depends on efficient and equitable mobility. The past century of transportation investment has been dominated by the auto and oil industries. What community and business voices will shape the transportation investments of the next 100 years? Let's challenge ourselves to develop a new perspective on this issue that is rooted in its potential to support equity, commerce, freedom, and quality of life.
Join Business for a Better Portland for delicious refreshments and networking time, a panel discussion of local transportation leaders moderated by Oregon Humanities Executive Director Adam Davis, and interactive design exercises to get those wheels turning.
This event is sponsored by METRO and Lyft and presented by Business for a Better Portland. |
