<p>Last month, we got a taste of how RubyMotion (and RedPotion) can make mobile app development fun and easy. However, we barely scratched the surface of interacting with remote data and APIs. In this meeting we will dive deeper into working with APIs, including dealing with common authentication scenarios.</p> <p>We will leave time at the end for Q&A/show&tell for you to show off any project you've been working on or to get help.</p> <p>Note that our meeting will be held at a NEW location, sponsored by Notch8. Pizza and drinks will be provided!</p> <p>If you missed our last meeting, or you want a recap of what we learned, check out our new website and blog posts: <a href="http://motionpdx.github.io" class="linkified">http://motionpdx.github.io</a></p> |

The only event in Portland Startup Week focussed squarely on the Portland CTO community!
My name is Etienne de Bruin and as a CTO myself I’ve had issues with connecting, learning and benefiting from the collective experiences of other CTOs and that is why I am working hard to create a trusted community of Chief Technology Officers, young and old, past and present based in Portland, OR.
Come enjoy cocktails and appetizers on me with the sole purpose of breaking down barriers and leaning into the collective. |

Join us on Monday, February 15th for a joint CoreOS and Techno-Activism 3rd Monday meetup. We're still looking for a host of the event, so if you have space and are interested, let us know! We'll have two knowledgable CoreOS presenters, Alex Crawford and Matthew Garrett, as well as lots of tasty food! Come learn about security and CoreOS.
6:00 pm
Food, Drink, Networking
6:30 pm
New Ways to Deploy and Manage Applications at Scale
Alex Crawford, software developer at CoreOS
The last decade belonged to virtual machines and the next one belongs to containers.
CoreOS is a new Linux distribution designed specifically for application containers and running them at scale. This talk will examine all the major components of CoreOS (etcd, fleet, docker, systemd) and how these components work together.
7:15 pm
Protecting Laptops Against High-Level Adversaries
Matthew Garrett, principal security software engineer at CoreOS
You’ve left your laptop in your hotel room. You come back, turn it on and type in your disk encryption passphrase. And, just like that, you've granted access to all your private data to the person who slipped in
with a USB stick while you were out.
This isn't a hypothetical case. We've seen companies selling tools that are intended to bypass disk encryption by simply modifying the boot process and waiting for the user to type in their decryption key. It's a worrying situation, but it's one that we can protect users against.
This presentation will describe how some of the same techniques used to protect servers can be used to verify the state of laptops. It'll demonstrate the use of a novel but straightforward piece of software that allows users to use widely deployed hardware to let users check the security of their system at a glance. And it'll talk about why you still need to be afraid of a smaller set of *really* scary people.
8:00
Networking

#"In diversity there is beauty and there is strength." - Maya Angelou
###Design has the power to permeate every product, moment, and solution in our lives.
###At the same time, diversity of thought leads to innovations in design that have the power to transform everyday life.
The question is, how do we design products, services & environments that reflect a diversity of experiences and perspectives, which are shaped by things like race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual identity, ability/disability and location, among other factors?
Please join us and our incredible panel of diversity, design + technology leaders, as we seek to address what diversity means, not only in the world of design and technology, but in the world at large.
###About our panelists:
Tyesha Snow has spent more than a decade creating and shaping interactive experiences and successfully managing software products, working with some of the world’s largest agencies to create brand affinity for Fortune 500 companies in multiple industries.
James Pritchett is an award-winning designer, known for delivering out-of-the-box concepts, dynamic visuals and innovative strategies for online and print delivery. His background includes acclaimed work on campaigns for startups to leading Fortune 500 brands. He is currently founder & CEO of The More Company.
Joy Alise Davis is a collaborative design strategist and interdisciplinary social practitioner. She is a founding partner of Design Culture Lab, a research-based social lab dedicated to the transformation of neighborhoods through collaborative design strategies that address complex spatial issues of cultural, racial and ethnic inequality.
An expert in front-end web development and UI, Darren Bruckner has been designing and building quality websites and web applications for major companies for almost 10 years. He’s currently founder and CEO of Workfrom.
###About our moderator:
Stephen Green is currently serving as community director of Elevate Capital and has over 10 years of experience connecting small/diverse businesses owners to the resources they need. |

### Making the Most of the lib Directory in a Rails App - Brett Chalupa
Where does code goes that does not cleanly fit within the MVC structure that Rails suggests? Does one create a new folder within the app directory and introduce a new concept to the app? The vendor directory?! Should it go in a gem? When the conventions of Rails do not cover a concept or approach, it is difficult to know where to put classes and modules.
Over the years, I have been putting more code in the lib directory. It allows for more object oriented code composition, faster tests, and a clear path for extraction into gems. Working in a directory with nothing but a "tasks" directory can be a bit daunting at first, but soon enough it will start to feel like home.
In this talk, I want to show the benefits of putting code in the lib directory, when to put code in lib, how to test code in lib, how to configure a Rails application to use the lib directory, and common pitfalls to watch out for. There will be plenty of examples, open source code to reference, and hopefully other folks sharing their experiences with the lib directory.
#
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.
# Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!
#
ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
<em>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. ### Designing by Contract: Using Types to Write Safer Code by Thomas Reynolds
Contracts.ruby is a library which allows Ruby code to be type-checked at runtime. By simply providing a type for input parameters and output values, you can drastically reduce common, and hard to track, Ruby bugs. We will discuss types in a simple, pragmatic and non-academic way as well as looking at code samples from Middleman v4 which is entirely covered by contracts.
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.

.NET for Industrial Machine Control by Bruce Greene
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
<p>Bruce writes C# programs that control industrial machines. His software controlled the creation of the Strati (the world’s first 3D printed car) and is shaping turbine blades at GE Aviation. He's currently working on systems that will turn precision watch parts in France, cut battery components in China, mill bearing races in Ohio, and cut boat parts in South Carolina.</p> <p>He is one of the best software engineers in the world in this particular specialty – and will be sharing many of his most effective techniques with you!</p> <p>Topics include:</p> <p>• An efficient application architecture for machine control.</p> <p>• Robust communication with motion controllers and other devices.</p> <p>• WPF techniques for screens that operators (and clients) will love.</p> <p>• Diagnostic tools and techniques. (The machine will not have an internet connection.)</p> <p>• Protecting your data from operators who will cut power to the machine.</p> <p>• Simple and effective internationalization using Microsoft Translation Services.</p> <p>There is a serious shortage of talent in this important field. A developer who is capable of delivering a reliable and attractive machine control application in a short time frame will have a very successful career. Furthermore, even if you are currently working in a different field - if you are working with C# and WPF - then be assured that you will take away something of interest from this presentation.</p> |

Test-driven development, refactoring, evolutionary design… these Agile engineering techniques have long been established for back-end code. But what about the front-end? For too many teams, it's dismissed with a "JavaScript sucks!" and unreliable, brittle code.
In this session, we look at what it takes to bring the best of Agile development to front-end code. Test-drive your JavaScript and refactor your CSS.
James Shore teaches, writes, and consults on Agile development processes. He is a recipient of the Agile Alliance's Gordon Pask Award for Contributions to Agile Practice, co-author of /The Art of Agile Development/, and host of "Let's Code: Test-Driven JavaScript." In 2012, InfoQ named him one of the "most influential people in Agile." You can find his screencasts at letscodejavascript.com and essays at jamesshore.com.

OWASP: Inspiring People to Embrace Risk Management
Roll back
| description |
This month's OWASP chapter meeting features Andrew Plato, President and CEO of Anitian.
Talk
===
Security leaders are under supreme pressure to build security programs that protect the business without disabling the business. However, the greatest impediment to success is not the technologies or regulations, but rather the people who must implement a security program. As a security leader, how do you communicate important risk, security, and compliance concepts to your team in a manner that inspires them to action?
The answer is security vision. We live in world where people do not want more rules, they want meaning. The problem with so much of what we do in security is that it often seems annoying and unnecessary to users and executives. When people understand the mission and vision of the organization, they are naturally inclined to follow good practices.
In this presentation, veteran security leader, as well as a CEO, Andrew Plato will discuss how to create, foster, and promote security vision to improve engagement with your co-workers. We will discuss communication, leadership, and motivational strategies that clarify and simplify security concepts to drive maximum employee engagement.
Speaker
===
Andrew Plato, CISSP, CISM, QSA
In 1995 while working at Microsoft, Andrew executed the first known instance of a SQL Injection attack against an early e-commerce site. When he demonstrated this attack to the developers, they dismissed the issue as irrelevant. This intrigued but also inspired Andrew to found Anitian with the goal of helping people understand the complexities of information security.
Today, Anitian is one of the most trusted names in security intelligence with clients worldwide. Anitian has a mission to Build Great Security Leaders. For the past 20 years, Andrew and Anitian have consistently executed on this mission with innovative, pragmatic answers to the most vexing security, compliance, and risk challenges.
Andrew’s career encompasses nearly every dimension of information security. He has participated in thousands of security projects, written hundreds of articles, and advised hundreds of C-level executives. Being a both a business owner and security practitioner allows Andrew to bring a unique perspective to any discussion regarding security, technology, and governance.
Andrew is well-known for delivering entertaining presentations that challenge conventional thinking and deliver practical answers to complex IT security challenges.

Discover the stories in your data, democratically

Information is for everyone.
As full participants in the knowledge economy, access to information is a basic tenet that we all cherish, especially when it comes to increasing that access to help make better choices. The better informed we are, the better decisions we make. Today, IT and dev functions in companies are often the guardians that maintain, manage, collect, and tend to the vast amounts of information that is being generated as data.
But what if we made it easier for all non-technical folks to understand data with intelligent, intuitive visualization tools? They would all have increased access to information! Our individual perspectives can bring about new insights where each team member stands to gain from finding their own perspective pattern in the data.
Our goal is to democratize data, to put the data exploration and discovery into the hands of the many.
In this event, we intend to fully involve the audience and have a personalized discussion on this novel new way to see the same data from different perspectives. What are the advantages? What are the challenges? How can the technical departments mitigate these challenges? These questions and more will be tackled.
