create Calagator::Event 1250470810 Creating the Future of AI: Not Just for Silicon Valley Roll back

description nil It is not too soon for social debate on how the economic fruits of AI-Technologies should be shared 100 Year Study~ Stanford University Forge Portland is proud to present the 1st in a series of conversations on the future of AI and our role in shaping how the technology will be integrated into our economic, social and political lives. Over the next 10 years our society will likely experience the most profound shift in the course of our history as computers and automation take over more and more of our jobs and daily tasks. While we are (probably) far from a Hollywood version of having Robot Overlords, innovations in automation, robotics and expert systems will fundamentally re-shape the nature of work and human interactions. The time to make these conversations mainstream is now. Join us for a panel discussion with Heath Nieddu, Senior Research Analyst of Optiv Security, Ben Berry, CEO of Airship Technology Group, and Arun Joshi, CEO of Visulon, on the scope and definition of AI, innovations in drone technology, and how companies are using the Hololens and VR in business today. Each panelist will present for 5-7 minutes and field questions from the audience. Afterward, Rob Bart, founder of Forge and moderator for the series, will lead a discussion between the audience and the panelists. A limited number of free tickets are available. description nil Ryan will present what he learned about using SpecFlow from Alexandra Marin’s talk at .NET Fringe, “Mobile testing for grown ups”, for anybody who missed it! Here is the description of Alexandra Marin’s “Mobile testing for grown ups” talk: "If you’re anything like me, coming on to a new project is terrifying: unknown domain, indecipherable (yes, I had autocorrect rewrite that word) tests and general panic. And I love unit tests as much as the next face-deep-in-code 24/7 developer, but that’s a limited way of testing your app and we can do better. So let’s take a swing at turning specifications into concrete, executable and easy-to-repeat behavior. The result is powerful UI acceptance testing by performing common behaviors like pressing buttons, making swipe gestures and entering text. Oh, and did I mention you can automate all this?" Doors Open at 6:00, Talk Begins at 6:30. Viewpoint is providing Pizza and Soda!

Coderetreat.org is a self-organized, volunteer led organization dedicated to helping software developers help each other improve their craft. Tanya Crenshaw and Jean Richardson will be teaming up to facilitate PDXWIT's 2016 Coderetreat. The Tech Academy is donating space and providing breakfast and lunch for the event. Come along for a day of codeplay in a supportive environment and help Coderetreat follow the sun during the global celebration of software development! Here's how it works: SW developers of all sorts gather together with their machines and IDE's ready to code Conway's Game of Life for 45 minute sessions. Pairs change with every 45 minute iteration so everyone gets exposed to different problem solving strategies, and everyone learns together: newbies and master-craft persons alike. There is no expectation to finish coding Conway's Game of Life at any point during the day. The purpose is to learn coding problem solving strategies, share skills and experience pairing in a supportive environment. An over $1500 value!

Summary
We live in a world of Big Data, trying to make sense of it to deliver Business Intelligence. We have the promise of NOSQL and Applied Data Science to deliver some solutions. In dealing with today's challenges we need some new and different ways of thinking. Do we still need Conceptual models? How do they continue to benefit us? What are the limitations of relational models, and how do we overcome them? What are the best strategies for preparing and presenting data model diagrams to support meaningful conversations with our business partners? How do our data modeling tools help? How is the data warehouse environment evolving? Are we beyond dimensional models? How do we work with NOSQL tools and schema-less databases? Do these environments still need data modeling? What is a Data Lake and how do we manage it? Dr. Gordon Everest will explore these questions and provide some insight for dealing with issues surrounding the role of data modeling in the world we live in today. His presentation will provide some new strategies and approaches. His presentations are always lively and will challenge our thinking.
PRESENTATION OUTLINE

DATA MODELING – Beyond the basics, and beyond relational

ADVANCED DATA MODELING CONCEPTS AND CONSTRUCTS

NORMALIZATION – Myths. The biggest problem with ER/Relational/Object modeling.

DATA MODEL PRESENTATION

FOCUS ON DATA WAREHOUSING and more

Includes (but not limited to):

Architecture of the Operational environment – ODS, staging (ETL), where is data cleansing?

Dimensional modeling, fact and dimension tables, cube, star schema and snowflake ◦Fact tables and dimension tables - should they be normalized?

Business Intelligence (BI), Analytics, data mining, OLAP

And now the "Data Lake" (from Bill Inmon) or perhaps a "Data Swamp"!

NOSQL – rationale and motivation, Schema-less or "schema on read"? ◦Type of Tools: Key value pair, multi-column, (directed?) graph, "document" (XML…)

Data modeling in a NOSQL environment. Do we still need data modelers?

Emerging role of the data analyst/scientist

Speaker
Dr. Gordon C. Everest is Professor Emeritus of MIS and Data Management in the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. He is actively engaged in the world of data modeling and data management, speaking to computer professional societies and consulting with large and small organizations. Early retirement has allowed him to focus on helping organizations improve their understanding and approach to data modeling. He continues to teach a course in advanced data modeling at the University of Minnesota. It is fully online and available to working professionals as well as students. (http://geverest.umn.edu). He is an astute observer and interpreter of developments and trends in information technology, data management, and particularly business data modeling.
Cost
Costs cover breakfast, lunch, facility rental and speaker travel costs. See our damapdx.org site for current list of corporate members.
Early Bird Registration (Before Sept 9th)

$99 DAMA PDX Members and Employees of DAMA PDX Corporate Members

$129 Non-Members

$59 Students (with valid student id)

Regular Registration (Starting Sept 9th)

$129 DAMA PDX Members & Employees of DAMA PDX Corporate Members

$149 Non-Members

$79 Students (with valid student id)

About DAMA Portland
The DAMA Portland Chapter is dedicated to delivering thought provoking data-centric presentations that will make you more successful in your job.
