description nil Does riding a tricycle to meetings make you seem more intelligent? It can if you work in tech. Join Seattle comedian Bridget Quigg for an evening of laughter as she spins her 11 years at startups into a celebration of the "quirks" of tech culture. Look forward to Quigg's signature mixture of games, stories, and music. Topics include the Agile Method, founders, recruiters, engineers, digital marketers, and outrageous snack options, like bone broth shots. The show sold out in Seattle and received positive acclaim from Geekwire, NPR, Broadway World, and more. Bring your friends for an evening of fun at The Funhouse Lounge. create Calagator::Event 1250470714 Galois tech talk: Internet of Things: From Small- to Large-Scale Orchestration Roll back

description nil abstract: The domain of Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly expanding beyond research and becoming a major industrial market with such stakeholders as major manufacturers of chips and connected objects, and fast-growing operators of low-power wide-area networks. Importantly, this emerging domain is driven by applications that leverage the infrastructure to provide users with innovative, high-value services. Because of this application-centric approach, software development plays a key role to realize the full potential of IoT. In this talk, we argue that there is a continuum between orchestrating connected objects in the small and in the large, fostering a unified approach to application development. We examine the requirements for orchestrating connected objects and address them with domain-specific design concepts. We then show how to map these design concepts into dedicated programming patterns and runtime mechanisms. Our work revolves around domain-specific notations integrated into a tool-based design methodology, dedicated to develop IoT applications. We have applied our work across a spectrum of infrastructure sizes; we present examples, ranging from an automated pilot in avionics, to an assisted living platform for the home of seniors, to a parking management system in a smart city. bio: Charles Consel is a professor of Computer Science at Bordeaux Institute of Technology. He served on the faculty of Yale University, Oregon Graduate Institute and the University of Rennes. His research contributions cover programming languages, software engineering, operating systems, pervasive computing, and assistive computing. He leads the Phoenix group at Inria that conducts multi-disciplinary research to design, develop, deploy and assess assistive computing support. This research combines (1) Cognitive Science to study user needs and make a rigorous assessment of assistive services; (2) Sensing and actuating expertise to support the user, based on accurate and rich interactions with the environment; (3) Computer Science to support and guide the development process of the assistive services.

create Calagator::Event 1250470713 SakéOne First Thursday at CENTRL Office Roll back

description nil Join us for First Thursday in the Pearl at CENTRL Office. SakéOne will be sampling Oregon Craft Saké as well as Japanese imports. Swing by for: Ice Cold Sake, Food Pairings, Sake-Inspired Art, A showing of The Birth of Sake, Music, Games, etc. etc. etc! The best way to appreciate hand-crafted art, is with a hand-crafted beverage in hand. American craft sake to the rescue! … SakéOne was founded by a group of folks who simply loved saké and had a vision – to produce world-class sake in the United States. Although sake was traditionally made in Japan, they believed that premium ginjo sake could be produced in the United States. With water as one of sake’s most critical ingredients, the east slope of Oregon’s Coastal Mountains was identified as an ideal water source for its purity. Forest Grove, Oregon, became the home of SakéOne, producer of Momokawa, Moonstone and g saké, America’s most honored sakés!

update Calagator::Event 1250470612 PDXWIT Deck Party Potluck Discussion: Tacking Technical Leadership Growth Roll back

description Event Description PDXWIT and Anne Meixner invite you to an intimate potluck-style gathering to discuss the challenges and opportunities of growing your technical leadership career! Anne will reach out before the event to coordinate what to bring. Non-alcoholic beverages will be provided. This event is designed for people in technical careers. As an engineer/scientist you have the option to grow your career along a management path (i.e. you aspire to be a VP) or along a technical path. Large technology companies often have explicit management and technical leadership path. While there naturally exists an overlap in skills there is an emphasis difference. Anne Meixner PhD has designed this event for people who want to focus on their growth as a technical leader. You will bring your companies descriptions for technical leader attributes or expectations that you and your manager have for technical leader growth. Guided group discussion will result in an understanding of the differences and similarities in these list of attributes. You then pick one area you wish to grow in for the next 6-12 months and at least one action you can take to develop in this area. Anne Meixner has 30+ years of experience as a semiconductor test R&D engineer, most recently at Intel Corporation. Via The Engineers’ Daughter LLC, she currently consults in the areas of technical leadership, semiconductor test, and technology development. To pass on wisdom to the next wave of technologist she blogs at www.engineersdauther.org on her life experiences, engineering wisdom and diverse ability. She invites others to submit blogs for this site.
