NOTE: We'll be in New Relic's newest meeting room, on the 27th floor

The Write The Docs NA conference returns to Portland in May, and the deadline for proposals is February 10 (midnight PST).

For the third year, we'll give people who want to propose a chance to test things out, either by speaking briefly, or by brainstorming their proposals.

FYI, O'Reilly has an excellent guide to creating conference proposals, "Propose, Prepare, Present". If you navigate to http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920027096.do, you can get the eBook version for free.

We'll start with a brief networking session from 6-6:30.

At 6:30, I'll make a few announcements. Anyone who wants to try out a "preview" of a conference talk (5-10 min), or just present their draft proposal for comments, can speak to the group (or ask questions) after that.
|

Apply Graph Theory to Infrastructure as Code | Mitchell Hashimoto, Founder, HashiCorp
Graphs are mathematical structures used to model relationships between objects. Modern infrastructure is a series of resources (objects) that have dependencies and ordering requirements (relationships). Thus, modern infrastructure can be represented as the mathematical construct of a graph. With just a few nodes, the relationships between resources in an infrastructure are easy to understand, but at a certain scale, the relationships become impractical to reason about.
Terraform relies on years of graph theory research to model the relationships between infrastructure resources so operators can safely manage and change infrastructure resources across bare metal, IaaS, PasS, and SaaS. Operators can avoid unforeseen consequences using Terraform

Recommendation systems are in use everywhere, and yet I found it difficult to find helpful material on implementing them. This workshop aims to make it both easy to understand and apply item-item collaborative filtering. It will be 30 minutes of theory and one hour of practice. This will be hands on using Jupyter notebooks—so please install Anaconda ahead of time.

It's Portland Startup Week! What better time to get the startup community together?

That's why Built Oregon, PIE, and Silicon Florist is using Startup Week as an opportunity to kick off a new year of Community Hour[s], our ongoing gatherings for all of the people who make up the entrepreneurial fabric of our community. There is no agenda, panel, or discussion. It’s a time to relax and network with old friends and make new connections with your peers and across industries.

As much as we all love technology, we realize that community relationships are built through personal connections and shared stories. So we hope you’ll join us for a few minutes — or a couple of hours.

As always, Community Hour[s] are graciously hosted by CENTRL Office.

See you there!

P.S. Don't forget… if you're interested in getting involved in Portland Startup Week, there's still time to host your own event.
