update Calagator::Event 1250471337 Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting Roll back

description We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. ##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm ###Josh Tompkins: Dependency Injection in Ruby A short discussion of dependency injection and inversion of control in Ruby - what it is, how it fits into your Ruby code, and answers to some common objections, plus an intro to a Ruby gem to help bring DI to your projects. ###Lauren Voswinkel: Conway's Game of Life Code Retreat. "We'll take 30-45 minutes to work on Conway's Game of Life. Pair programming is *highly* encouraged, but is not required. We'll take some time to talk about what we learned during the exercise, as well as what approaches worked and what didn't. The whole idea of this exercise is to have a space and time to actively practice coding." **Please Bring Your Laptops** After presentations we'll have more socializing time. ##**Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!** ARRIVING BY BIKE? The bike parking situation has changed! The bike parking is no longer accessible to the group. You can leave your bike in the freight elevator lobby, but be warned that there are no racks there. Sorry! If you're a trusting sort, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." Buzz in with the intercom, and say you're here for New Relic. ABOUT THE GROUP: *The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!* We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. ###Lauren Voswinkel: Conway's Game of Life Code Retreat. create Calagator::Event 1250471437 Galois tech talk: Rust - from POPL to practice Roll back

description nil abstract: In 2015, a language based fundamentally on substructural typing–Rust–hit its 1.0 release, and less than a year later it has been put into production use in a number of tech companies, including some household names. The language has started a trend, with several other mainstream languages, including C++ and Swift, in the early stages of incorporating ideas about ownership. How did this come about? Rust’s core focus is safe systems programming. It does not require a runtime system or garbage collector, but guarantees memory safety. It does not stipulate any particular style of concurrent programming, but instead provides the tools needed to guarantee data race freedom even when doing low-level shared-state concurrency. It allows you to build up high-level abstractions without paying a tax; its compilation model ensures that the abstractions boil away. These benefits derive from two core aspects of Rust: its ownership system (based on substructural typing) and its trait system (a descendant of Haskell’s typeclasses). The talk will cover these two pillars of Rust design, with particular attention to the key innovations that make the language usable at scale. It will highlight the implications for concurrency, where Rust provides a unique perspective. It will close out with a discussion of Rust’s development process and design considerations around language and library evolution. bio: Aaron Turon is Research Engineering Manager for the Rust team at Mozilla. He received his PhD from Northeastern University, where he studied programming language design, program verification, and low-level concurrency. His dissertation was awarded the SIGPLAN John C. Reynolds Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2014. After his PhD studies, he continued his research in concurrency verification and programming techniques as a postdoc at MPI-SWS. He joined Mozilla in 2014, and has played an active role in Rust’s development since then.

create Calagator::Event 1250471430 PDX Women In Tech (PDXWIT) Entrepreneurs & Developers Collaboration Dinner Roll back

description nil **NOTE: This event has a cap of 15 attendees. RSVPing on Meetup does not guarantee an entry. Please sign up - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-entrepreneurs-developers-collaboration-dinner-tickets-31810142994. The exact location of the event will be emailed to the attendees closer to the event** Are you an entrepreneur or software developer interested in collaboration or support? This intimate dinner event will be hosted by a PDXWIT community member, Jesseca Ryan, to bring together entrepreneurs working in tech and software developers who like working on startup projects. Over delicious food and beverages we’ll discuss how we can be allies, support each other’s work, and overcome obstacles in getting a tech startup off the ground. This event is ideal for those who want to engage with the PDXWIT community, but might feel overwhelmed at the larger social events. We hope this event catalyzes connections that develop into something bigger in 2017 and beyond. PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events.

description nil RSVP - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-happy-hour-networking-event-tickets-31788356831 Join us for happy hour at Simple to celebrate community! PDX Women in Tech is proud of our community so we are honoring it as the centerpiece of our February 2017 event. This month’s theme is about loving your communities–the diverse, varied, overlapping communities we exist in. We will hear from two lightning speakers whose lives revolve around building community, and our conversation prompt will be asking each other why community is so important in our lives. While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase women in our community who are doing great things. Introduction to Simple, including what they do and what jobs they are trying to fill. Meet entrepreneur Deena Pierott, the founder of iUrban Teen and a White House Champion of Change in the Obama administration. A talk by Allison Krug, a Technical Community Manager at AppNexus and yoga instructor, whose passion is building community both at work and in her spiritual practice. Remember, throughout the event we will have an activity table for people who want to create during the event. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing.
