description nil This group is meant as a round table for anyone interested in conversational/intelligent agents (chatbots) whether voice or text driven. Feel free to bring your questions no matter how basic, technical, academic or business or design related. We'll get together and talk about the group, what we want from it and what we are working on and interested in doing. I'll give an overview of basic voice agent (Alex / Google home) development as I see and understand it designed to get us sharing information. Let me know if you are interested in presenting something or leading a discussion. Afterwards some of us will go to a local bar/restaurant to continue the conversation.

create Calagator::Event 1250472501 Portland SaaS Founders - Developing high functioning software teams for SaaS Roll back

description nil <p>We're all faced with the challenge of creating an awesome software product for our customers. A big part of this is having a highly functional software development team.  </p> <p>In this Meetup we'll discuss:</p> <p>• When to develop software in-house versus outsourcing or partnering with another software platform. Some SaaS companies utilize a mix of in-house and outsourced developers. We'll brainstorm various possible approaches.</p> <p>• How do you train new developers?  What approaches have been successful and what has been a dismal failure? - Does it make sense to hire senior developers only or a mix of junior and senior developers?</p> <p>• Team / project organization - Do you do daily standups? How do your organize sprints? How are deadlines established and by whom? Is your team in the same office or are some remote? What tools do you use (Slack, Trello, etc.)? With all of the bugs, feature requests, UI overhauls, when do you ship updates to the product?</p> <p>• Communication and transparency - How do you speak to the rest of the team in a language everyone understands? Do you hold weekly/bi-weekly meetings to announce progress? How do you showcase new features to clients?</p> <p>Coffee, tea and draft beer will be provided. Come hang out with other SaaS founders and share your story!</p> <p><br>If there's more on this topic you would like to discuss, send us a message and we'll try and get it added to the agenda.</p>

description nil Chris Hansen will be presenting an early version of a talk "[It’s Good to Have (JVM) Options](https://oracle.rainfocus.com/catalog/oracle/oow17/catalogjavaone17?search=CON3329&showEnrolled=false)" he will be delivering at the JavaOne technology conference in October. Chris has organized technology events for youth in Portland and is a product manager for New Relic's Java agent. Abstract: The Oracle HotSpot JVM has hundreds of command-line options for tuning performance for your particular application and workload. Which ones are the most useful and the most commonly used, and which are misused? New Relic monitors more than half a million JVMs. In addition to providing runtime performance data, the New Relic Java Agent reports JVM command-line options. By looking at anonymous JVM configuration data, we can draw out interesting patterns and trends. This presentation walks through some of the most commonly used JVM options and some cases in which certain combinations may have unintended consequences. You’ll come away with a better idea of when to use an option and when JVM defaults may be the best choice.

The meetup will run from 8:30-10 a.m. Be there early to make your order before we start; coffee and snacks will be provided. This event is sponsored by PDXWIT, AgilePDX and Portland Lean Coffee. Purpose:<br> PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. update Calagator::Event 1250472491 PDXWIT Immerse Yourself in Virtual Reality Roll back

description Are you looking for an event to get better acquainted with Virtual Reality? In partnership with Joshua Alan Young from the Portland VR Meetup, co-organizers Judy Fischbach and Marguerite Gallagher invite you to come learn what Virtual Reality offers and to understand why there is so much trending interest. An emerging technology that is expected to impact many fields, including entertainment, journalism, education, and health care, VR/AR has been identified by the Technology Association of Oregon as one of top areas of technology growth in our state. The community in Portland is gaining momentum. It's an exciting time for many of us to jump in as the technology is so new. The playing field is more level and there is much interest beyond non-technology in areas such as the arts and education. The integrative nature of creating applications in VR can be unique and fun! Don’t know where to begin? We will have an overview, hands-on opportunities to experience the technology, and information on tools and resources. Our panel will include speakers from the community on VR education and on companies/projects with promising VR related work which demonstrates the variety of exciting applications. Bring your questions! We promise this will be a fun and memorable evening as we explore ways to grow community together in this fascinating new area of technology! <br><br> Agenda: <br>5:30 - 6:30 : Networking / Trials-Demos / Vendors <br>6:30 - 6:45 : Welcome and Overview <br>6:45 - 7:45 : Guest Speakers <br>7:45 - 8:15 : Networking <br><br> Event FAQ <br>Q: What is the parking situation? <br>A: Public parking and street parking is available (though we cannot validate parking). <br>Q: Is there secured bike parking? <br>A: There is an open bike room, but please bring locks as it is in a common space. <br>Q: Should I consider using public transportation? <br>A: We always recommend public transportation as a way to cut down on Co2, and there is plenty of public transportation nearby. <br><br> Purpose: PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. create Calagator::Event 1250472485 TECHFLUENCE Roll back

description nil Join us for a special evening with Daniel Wilson, author of the New York Times bestselling Robopocalypse and its sequel Robogenesis, as well as seven other books. Daniel, who earned a PhD in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University, as well as Masters degrees in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics will be reading from his most recent novel, The Clockwork Dynasty. After the reading, Daniel will be joined by Todd Greco, Ziba’s Director of Interactive Design, in a conversation exploring where science, technology and design overlap, and the future of machines. We look forward to audience engagement in this conversation. Daniel will be available for a book signing following the speaking program. The Clockwork Dynasty imagines a history in which humanlike court automatons secretly served the great empires of antiquity. Centuries later, the same machines are running out of power. As the modern-day survivors cannibalize each other for energy, a human scientist will risk her life to find the origin of the machine race, and the key to saving it. Doors at 5:30pm, show starts promptly at 6pm. Pizza & drinks to follow.

description nil The Cinema of Horrors is a unique Halloween event featuring two haunted houses at the old Three Rivers Mall theater in Kelso, WA. Featuring the “FarmHouse”, our most terrifying attraction is a non-stop adrenaline rush inside of Ma's disgusting, dusty, demented 'ol house where the family always enjoys tormenting their visitors. Our second attraction, “Dark Legends of New Orleans”, is an adrenaline rush in which you'll take a trip to New Orleans and come face to face with some of history's most dark and terrifying legends. Besides our two, top notch haunted attractions we’re featuring a CLOWN scare zone, delicious fair foods for hungry fear seekers, a pumpkin carving booth, photo ops, haunt merch, trick-or-treat nights and more! The Cinema of Horrors is an all ages, family friendly event. However, we recommend it for audiences 13 years or older. For younger audiences we offer fun, non-scary, trick-or-treat nights.
