Our Hackerspace is a place where people with an interest in computing or technology can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge. There is plenty of table space, bandwidth and 3D printers (for those looking to try that out). Bring your ideas, works in progress, or something to show off. We'll see you there!</p> |

Is Investment Right For You?
Many entrepreneurs assume they need an investment to launch or grow their businesses. While angel investment and venture capital can provide critical sources of support and financing for early-stage companies, it is crucial to do your research before you start seeking investors.
Join us along with Bill Bryant from DFJ, Angela Jackson from Portland Seed Fund, and Julianne Brands from the Oregon Angel Fund to learn about the pros and cons of taking on investment, how various funding options differ, and what investors look for when evaluating a company.
We would like to thank Oregon Angel Fund (OAF) and Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN) for putting this event together with PDXWIT.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open
5:00 p.m. - Panel Begins
6:00 p.m. - Questions
6:30 p.m. - Event ends
Event FAQ:
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: Yes
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?

Q: Where there be food and drink at this event?

Q: Is there secured bike parking?

Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Absolutely Yes. The max line runs along NW 11th/Glisan (we’re located on NW 13th/Glisan) & the 77 bus runs west on Glisan & east on Everett
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

What: Meltdown and Spectre Vulnerabilities<br>
Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)<br>

Seemingly simultaneously multiple people discovered these vulnerabilities that exploit CPU data cache timing to cause protected information to be leaked. I'll start with a review of modern CPU design features like parallel execution, out of order execution, speculative execution, branch prediction, cache access and side channels leading up to the 3 flaws, called Meltdown and Spectre. Including a simple understandable example of the flaws, and show an actual Proof of Concept.
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.

Vision boards have quite literally changed Sarah’s life.
In 2008 she found herself destitute, broke and having to recreate her life from scratch after her husband’s affair ended their 8-year marriage, leaving her to pick up the pieces with their three very small children. (Read her story)
Hitting rock bottom sparked in Sarah a desire to totally recreate her life.
So what did she do?
Sarah created a #FutureBoard (a.k.a. vision board). And within 18 months, went from poverty to living her dreams as a corporate executive, manifesting nearly her entire board in that timeframe! Since then, she has manifested FOUR vision boards and an entirely new life, one where she is daily living her wildest dreams.
If you are ready to build a clearer vision for your life, join us at this workshop.
A few things to note
Be sure to bring any magazines or photos, and a notepad and pen.
Ticket proceeds will include Sarah’s book Hustle Believe Receive: An 8 Step Plan to Changing Your Life and Living Your Dream and support PDX Women in Tech.

Portland DevOps Groundup - PDX DevOps Monthly Meetup!

<p>Join us for our monthly gathering to discuss everything from incident response to cross-team collaboration to automation frameworks. Food provided. Please RSVP!</p> <p>This month: LIGHTNING TALKS!</p> <p>DevOps Preppers</p> <p>Sure, the odds of you meeting your demise from a zombie bite are pretty much zero, but pretending it could happen isn’t completely worthless. This talk will walk through how a prepper thinks, how that mindset can be extended via the Incident Command System, and how you can use iICS for non-zombie-based risks.</p> <p>Tiffany Longworth is a Site Reliability Engineer at Puppet. She has launched successful projects large and small, but has also worked on projects that were spectacular failures! She likes using her background as a Marine, her training as an English teacher, automation, and cat gifs as much as possible.</p> <p>*****</p> <p>So you want to switch to microservices?</p> <p>The hype cycle around microservices often glosses over the real challenges that engineering teams face when trying to migrate away from monolithic applications. In this talk, we'll discuss code architectures and strategies that can help guide your codebase's transition from mono to micro.</p> <p>Matt Greensmith is the Operations Engineering Manager at Cozy, where's he's responsible for a lot of nouns that end in "ity," like reliability, observability and security. In a past life he was simultaneously a call center rep, a bingo caller and a wedding DJ, so you know he likes to talk.</p> <p>*****</p> <p>A Brief History of Schedulers</p> <p>What do schedulers do for us, how has that changed over time, and why should we care? We'll discuss the historical context that gave rise to early schedulers, and take a look at the state of such tools today.</p> <p>Kate has been in software engineering for almost a decade, having worked in areas ranging from power grid resiliency to fintech to enterprise software. Kate has managed a variety of teams across the devops spectrum at New Relic and Simple, and is now at HashiCorp helping build tools for other companies and teams to manage their own infrastructure.</p> <p>*****</p> <p>What DevOps can teach you about starting a business (and why spreadsheets are everything)</p> <p>I went from devops to starting a magazine and was happy and dismayed that many of the same skills apply to both. What happens when you don’t have time for structuring databases, building a custom front-end, or maintaining any real code? Well, there’s a lot you can do with a spreadsheet.</p> <p>Audrey Eschright is a writer, community organizer, and software developer based in Portland, OR. She's the publisher of The Recompiler, a feminist technology magazine. Previously she founded Calagator, an open source community calendaring service which has been actively used in the Portland tech community for ten years as of this month. Her work on community safety and codes of conduct is used by user groups and open source projects around the world.</p> <p>*****</p> <p>Pair Programming/Problem Solving</p> <p>Pair programming is a practice a lot of engineers know about, few profess to enjoy and everyone has an opinion about. Let’s take a look at how to use it regardless of your role and leverage it to shift our perception of effective problem solving.</p> <p>Logan Davis is a software developer. He’s shipped a lot of code and some of it was pretty good. He believes in fostering an inclusive culture focused on solving problems in a healthy way. Logan currently is a software engineer at InComm Digital Solutions.</p> <p>*****</p> <p>Risky Business</p> <p>As we operate production systems they inevitably fail. As they fail and fail and fail again we as operators start to identify the way they fail and we know the causes of the failures. What if we could see the future and predict failures before they happen. We're going to explore using techniques to identify risks and how to present the risks to engineering and business stakeholders.</p> <p>Jesse Dearing enjoys spending time with his family, bicycling, and working on small projects around the house and in Open Source. During working</p> |

OEN Seminar: Pitch Perfect
Roll back
| description |
Whether talking to someone in line at the supermarket or pitching to a VC, you need to be able to communicate your great idea. But the best message in the world won’t stick if you deliver it poorly, and a great delivery cannot overcome a confusing message. Join us to learn how to craft a clear, concise, compelling pitch that will pique investor interest.
You’ll walk away with an understanding of:
- The problem you’re solving and your value proposition
- What questions you need to answer before crafting your pitch
- The elements, structure, and visuals that comprise a successful pitch
- How to condense a full pitch into a one-minute elevator pitch
Registration for this workshop includes one pass to our March 14 -
PitchFest and three free months of LivePlan business plan software (combined value of $85). Following the workshop, participants will have an opportunity to complete a one-page overview of their business using LivePlan and submit it for the opportunity to compete in PitchFest.
