PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) January Happy Hour Networking Event
Roll back

***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-january-happy-hour-networking-event-tickets-40888648047] is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event ***
Join us for happy hour at SurveyMonkey on January 23rd.
People often talk about creating a work culture that allows people to “bring their best self to work.” To start the conversation, we are asking “what is an important personal value you bring to work?” with an aim to allow us to explore our best selves.
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
Introduction to SurveyMonkey, including what they do and what job opportunities are available.
Amy King, Senior Product Manager at Digimarc [https://www.digimarc.com/], will talk about picking the right approach to design for emerging vs. established technologies.
Madonnalisa Chan, Freelance Information Architect - Taxonomist, will talk about making values-based decisions in your career.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
- We are celebrating our 6th anniversary (yes 6 years!) with a photo booth courtesy of Snapbar (https://thesnapbar.com/)
- An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for
Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
- Table Topics to help break the ice.
- A section for job seekers and those hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - : Event ends

CHIFOO presents "Is Design Metrically Opposed?" with Jared Spool, Center Centre & UIE!
The world of metrics and analytics have often been at odds with how designers work. Design is a process where we finely tune our intuition to create great user experiences. Yet, sometimes, what we think is best rivals the metrics. So which do we believe-our gut or the data?
In the world of measures, metrics, and Key Performance Indicators some practices, like the growth hacking approach to increasing Monthly Average Users (MAUs), have hurt the online experience of Instagram and LinkedIn. While alternatives to satisfaction and net promoter score give insight into the design process and help designers have better instincts.
If you’re ready to talk to your teams about what you really need, help management interpret the data, and create analytical experiments that provide design insights, don’t miss this talk.
About the Speaker
Jared Spool (@jmspool) is a co-founder of Center Centre and the founder of UIE.
While he led UIE, the industry research firm he started in 1988, the field of UX design emerged and Jared helped define what makes UX designers successful all over the world. UIE's world-class research organization produces conferences and workshops all over the world and for companies in every industry.
In 2016, with Dr. Leslie Jensen-Inman, he opened Center Centre, a new school in Chattanooga, TN to create the next generation of industry-ready UX Designers. They created a revolutionary approach to vocational training, infusing Jared's decades of UX experience with Leslie's mastery of experience-based learning methodologies.
CHIFOO is celebrating its 25th anniversary! Come join CHIFOO for our first speaker event for 2018's theme "Do the Right Thing- HCI Ethics: Where Do We Start".

Humanize the Virtual Team Experience
Roll back
| description |

How do we combat the “out of sight, out of mind” mentality in virtual teams? How do we cultivate a virtual team dynamic which nourishes engaged collaboration and equitable dialog among all voices? As organizations continue to grow flatter and increasingly become more global, remote teams need to acquire new skills to build trust with one another and overcome the perceived distance in the virtual team environment. In this talk Line Mørkbak and her online colleague Sarika Kharbanda share some of their insights and tips on how to ensure that we engage all voices in our online collaboration. They will explore various tools and techniques to increase a sense of team and bring back the “human” interaction. Line and Sarika will look at the latest research on virtual collaboration, exploring the mindset needed to create a nourishing virtual work environment, and will share tools to support fluid collaboration for online teams.
Line Mørkbak is constantly exploring new methods to engage learners and develop team approaches that empower f2f and virtual collaboration. Dynamic participation, interactivity, and engagement are keywords for her workshops and learning designs. As a Global Collaboration Facilitator she divides her time between European and North American clients and her work often takes place in a virtual global environment. Line is constantly exploring and experimenting with ways to enhance the way we collaborate with our colleagues when we are not in the same physical location. As a global citizen, Line has lived and worked internationally for the past 19 years and is now based in Portland, OR. http://www.gleapconsult.com/
Sarika Kharbanda is an accomplished Lean and Agile practitioner who has worked with enterprises and diverse cultures in Poland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, Singapore, India, China, Hong Kong and the United States. Her work as an Agile Coach has enabled her clients to experience greater business agility across geographies with on-site innovative games, training, coaching and mentoring. |

<p>Unfortunately, tonight's speaker Micah and his family have come down with the flu, and he will not be able to speak tonight. We'll still hold the meetup, but we'll set up for a Bring Your Own Project night: bring a project to share (or get help with), or come ready to give help to others.<br>We're working on rescheduling Micah for February. We'll leave the talk description up for now to give you an idea of what's coming.</p> <p>------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------</p> <p>For the final Meetup of 2017, we welcome back Micah Godbolt to talk design systems!</p> <p>About the talk:<br>HTML and CSS are all you need to create a Design System that unifies the visual appearance of your products, but as soon as you want to create consistent behavior between applications, you'll need to turn to JavaScript. More often than not, using a modern framework such as React, Vue, or Angular will save you lots of time, and keep you from reinventing the wheel.</p> <p>In this talk, I will discuss how moving interactivity into the Design System is not only a good choice today, but is most certainly how you will be creating Design Systems in the future. I'll also be discussing the React-powered Design System I've been helping to create which powers a few apps you might have heard of, including SharePoint, OneDrive, and Outlook for the web.</p> <p>About the speaker:<br>Micah Godbolt, a Senior Design Developer at Microsoft, is a Front-end Architect, author, speaker, trainer, blogger and developer from the Portland area.</p> <p>Event Details</p> <p>Food, drinks, and conversation beginning at 6:30. The talk begins around 7:00.</p> <p>Parking is available in the parking lot directly across the street from the Connective DX office on Pettygrove. There are also bike racks available just inside the entrance to the building.</p> |

pdxrlang meetup: aggregate - Shiny workshop
Roll back

Aggregate meetup No. 17! Everyone is welcome!
shiny (https://shiny.rstudio.com/) is a popular web application framework for making interactive visualizations and dashboards, allowing R users to share their analyses in an interactive format with minimal web programming expertise. In this workshop, we will produce a simple data exploration dashboard with tooltips using the shiny, ggplot2 and flexDashboard packages. I will introduce the basic concepts behind programming a shiny application, as well as some useful design patterns (reactives, tooltips, observe/update/isolate). Basic familiarity with R programming concepts and `ggplot2` are suggested
We will not have pizza this time, but we will have some drinks, and perhaps some light snacks.
Agenda:
* This aggregate will be a bit different from the others. pdxrlang member Ted Laderas (http://laderast.github.io/ - https://github.com/laderast) will give a workshop on using Shiny. More details to come!

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.
