The Robot Film Festival (RFF) is an annual celebration of robots on screen and in performance. The event features screenings of invited films and juried selections from open- call submissions, live performances by robot entertainers, and a red-carpet awards ceremony.
The eighth annual Robot Film Festival is themed VINTAGE ARCADE REVIVAL. What would the robots of today look like through the lens of 1980's technoptimists? Enter a technological storytelling time machine, and see the modern world through their eyes.
Event Schedule:
4pm Short Film Screenings
6pm Cocktail Party
8pm Botskers Award Cememony
Over the course of the festivities, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Pearl District; savor delicious locally-made food and beverages, appreciate robotic demonstrations and art exhibits, and discuss the richly varied and thematically curated screening sessions.
History: RFF was founded in New York City in 2011 with the mission of spreading positive storytelling about robotics. Since then, the Festival has expanded its influence with events in San Francisco, Pittsburgh, and Los Angeles. The event is produced by an
interdisciplinary team of roboticists, filmmakers, and storytellers. Through these traveling screenings and its online video archives, RFF nurtures a community of creatives and engineers who explore, document, and invent the imaginative world of robotics.

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Women + Tech Summer Soiree
Roll back
| description |
***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-women-tech-summer-soiree-tickets-46660516862] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Join us for our annual summer soiree, brought to you by PDX Women in Tech and Women Who Code, in partnership with Lesbians Who Tech, ChickTech, Girls Inc. and PyLadies, hosted by Wieden+Kennedy and sponsored by Cambia!
Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, a civil rights advocate, feminist and UCLA School of Law and Columbia Law professor specializing in race and gender issues, coined the term intersectionality to describe how people's various identities (racial, gender, class. etc.) intersect and overlap, creating a cumulative effect in the discrimination they receive.
At this year’s summer soiree, we dedicate our theme to our proclamation that the future of tech must be intersectional. Otherwise, the technologies that are being developed today will not consider the needs of large swaths of our population and thus will not succeed. This night is dedicated to introducing you to leaders in the spaces of blockchain, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence to demonstrate the accessibility of these spaces to the people of our community. We also hope to carve a path forward, together, where we can push for the change that needs to happen in these industries. To support this discussion our conversation starter for the evening is “how can tech be more accessible to underrepresented communities?”
The summer soiree will feature a panel. To see full list of panelists, visit the Eventbrite link listed above.
During the event, we’ll have an Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
About Cambia Health Solutions
Cambia Health Solutions, headquartered in Portland, Oregon, is dedicated to transforming health care. Our company reaches more than 70 million Americans nationwide, including more than two million people in the Pacific Northwest who are enrolled in our regional health plans.

Galois Tech Talk: Reasoning about Critical Systems using Refinement
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Abstract:
Verification is often the dominant cost in the design of critical systems. In this talk, we advocate the use of refinement to reason about critical systems. The idea is that a system is correct if all of its observable behaviors are allowed by an abstract system that acts as the specification. For example, to verify a microprocessor using refinement, one shows that it implements its instruction set architecture. We provide a general introduction to refinement and motivate the need for various notions of refinement. We present various techniques and methods that have been developed to facilitate mechanized reasoning. We discuss the use of refinement for reasoning about distributed systems and hardware.
Bio:
Pete Manolios is a Professor in the College of Computer and Information Science at Northeastern. Pete’s primary research interest is mechanized formal verification and validation of computational systems. Pete has served as an Associate Editor of ACM Transactions on Design Automation of Electronic Systems (TODAES), as a member of the FMCAD, ACL2 and ITP Steering Committees, and is a member of the IFIP working group 1.9/2.15 on Verified Software. |

This month we have lined up a super special event!!!!!
————————————————————————
When the neo4j team reached out to us to setup an event during OSCON we jumped all over this. Not only will we be having the presentations you are all used to, but we will be welcoming a number of talks that did not make the cut for the OSCON conference. On top of this, 100% of the ticket proceeds will be donated to Planned Parenthood https://www.plannedparenthood.org/.
Just like fight club, if this is your first night attending, you have to present.
We have all heard the pitch before, and we make no exceptions to this rule. Since this meetup is in the larger space we will have a projector you can hook up to, or just use the sound of your voice. What should you present? Well, we do not spec that.
Discussing your startup, recent project, code reviews, business ideas, etc. are all applicable. There is not a required length of time to present. This can be a live prototype or even a set of powerpoint slides. You do not have to know how to code to present your dream, and we are HERE TO HELP you. Presentations are meant to be collaborative, not the traditional meetup style where a presenter talks like a teacher for a very long time and saves questions for the end. We use a timer and the group dynamic works to collaboratively prevent cross talk and side conversations.
So bring your fun spirit, desire to learn, passion to help others, and let's have fun.
————————————————————————
Signups through meetup.com are required and seats are limited, so buy your tickets early because we usually sell out. We are self funded, and 100% of the revenue received is put back into the meetup costs. We will have top shelf pizza from Crown PDX (http://www.imperialpdx.com/the-crown/) so come HUNGRY for dinner!!
Doors open at 6pm and we kick off on time. We start consuming the pizza at 6pm as well. After the concert of presentations we will walk over to Bailey's Taproom (http://www.baileystaproom.com/) to continue the evening.
————————————————————————
Location: WeWork Customs House : Community : When you check in ask for CP Handheld, they are our sponsor. The room is right to the left as you walk in. |

Want to learn how to take your projects to the next level?
Practical, Hands-on Training for Scrum
Join us for an all day Scrum workshop on August 20th, 2016; hosted by the IBEA featuring Suzanne Ward MBA MEng PMP CSM CSPO PSM CSP, a Scrum Master & Agile Coach/Trainer from Intel.
Our world is changing fast. Markets and consumers are demanding faster, cheaper and better products. Demands for quicker turnaround on new product development and innovation have only increased. How do companies like Google, Yahoo, Amazon, and Apple keep up? They practice agile techniques, in particular they utilize scrum to manage their projects.
Scrum has the power to transform project management across every industry, every business, and even across your personal life. What Is ResearchOps? Workshop
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
ResearchOps, an outgrowth of DesignOps, is a new and fast-growing field focused on managing research at scale and reducing operational inefficiencies. The ResearchOps Community (https://researchops.community) is now 700+ strong.
Since its creation, the Slack Community has become a place for people from all walks of research and design life to exchange ideas, know-how, and, yes, frustrations, about the running of research teams and projects.
The ResearchOps Community is running a series of global workshops to produce some kind of actionable framework for ResearchOps, and we're representing team USA with this workshop in Portland!
Anything that we (and the global community) produce out of the workshops will be open-source: made by all who take part, shared back to you, and free to use.
Some of the questions we’d like to explore are:
1. What do you think ResearchOps includes?
2. What research operational challenges have you experienced?
3. What are your operational successes, if any?
4. Where do you see opportunities to improve research operations in your organization?
5. What should our Community do for its members?
If there are questions you’d like to explore in addition to these let us know and we’ll make time for them!
Learn more about the global workshop series here: https://medium.com/researchops-community/researchops-community-a-series-of-global-workshops-d48058ece814
AGENDA
5:30pm: Networking
6:00pm: Welcome, workshop overview
6:30pm: Explore ResearchOps and share stories (we’ll take breaks)
8:15pm: Wrap-up, next steps
Complimentary food and drinks will be provided! |

PDXRust - Writing Software That's Safe Enough To Drive A Car
Roll back
| description |

<p>This month, Shea Newton will be presenting "Writing Software That's Safe Enough To Drive A Car!"</p> <p>Autonomous cars run on software, and most of the microcontrollers in today's cars are programmed using C. We have found that even the best code checking for C does not protect against system-crippling errors - the kind of errors that could endanger the lives of future drivers. C is simply not the right language for safety-critical software, but what about Rust?</p> <p>## Target audience</p> <p>I'd like to try and keep this talk relatively high level. Examples of self-corrupting code may resonate more with developers who have written C but ideally the talk will apply to anyone interested in Rust and curious about the state of self-driving car technology.</p> <p>------------------------------------------------------------------</p> <p>We may also have time for lightning talks and socializing as well.</p> <p>------------------------------------------------------------------</p> <p>As always, we'll be following the Rust Code of Conduct: <a href="https://www.rust-lang.org/en-US/conduct.html" class="linkified">https://www.rust-lang.org/en-US/conduct.html</a></p> |

OAuth 2.0 Simplified: The OAuth 2.0 authorization framework has become the industry standard in providing secure access to web APIs. OAuth allows users to grant external applications access to their data, such as profile data, photos, and email, without compromising security. However, OAuth can be intimidating when first starting out. In this talk, Aaron Parecki will break down the various OAuth workflows and provide a simplified overview of the framework, highlighting a few typical use cases for web apps, mobile apps and browserless devices.
Speaker's Bio: Aaron Parecki is a developer advocate at Okta, and maintains oauth.net. He's the co-founder of IndieWebCamp, a yearly unconference focusing on data ownership and online identity, and is the editor of the W3C Webmention and Micropub specifications.
