Join us for February Happy Hour at Puppet!
PDXWIT is looking forward to seeing you at our February Happy Hour at Puppet! Most of us procrastinate from time to time, but maybe that is not such a bad thing. The theme of the evening is Overcoming Procrastination, and we will discuss how that last minute pressure can often help us crank out some great work. The conversation starter to keep the networking flowing will be “What helps you focus when you need to get work done?”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase some individuals in our community.
- An employee of Puppet will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities
- Rebecca Snyder will talk about how improv can help us in business
- A local engineering leader will present “A Nerd’s Guide to Debugging Procrastination”
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
- An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
- Table Topics to help break the ice.
- A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, announcements + lightning speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends
Event FAQ:
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: No.
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: Yes
Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?
A: Yes
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: There is usually plenty of metered street parking and pay-to-park parking lots.
Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance?
A: We will have signs in the lobby directing people to the 5th floor.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: No.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Yes - MAX runs right in front of our building so it is really convenient. The bus lines are just a couple blocks away.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No, please leave your furry friends at home. There are dogs in the building during work hours.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

How it works: No sign-up required. First 12 entrepreneurs to arrive will get 5-min power sessions with PSF managers Jim Huston, Angela Jackson and Jenn Lynch. Ringler booths will be filled with PSF alumni founders and mentors, so additional rotations give you extra feedback. Everyone gets pizza (and a beer!)

Serverless Architecture Meetup - Security in a Serverless World: Understanding Risk and Protection
Roll back

Cheers to 2019! We are starting the year off talking about Security!
According to a 2018 survey from The New Stack, over 75% of organizations are using or plan to use serverless in the next 18 months. But it does not come without security risks. In this talk, Sonya will discuss key components of serverless architecture and potential risks organizations need to be aware of, such as: visibility and monitoring challenges, denial-of-service attacks, dependencies on external resources, access control risks, and best practices for serverless security both as functions are built and at runtime.
Sonya Koptyev is the Director of Evangelism at Twistlock. She has been driving community efforts across various development technologies since the early days of SharePoint and .NET. Sonya worked on building the Office developer community and the Microsoft AI developer community and bringing the latest in bleeding edge technologies into the hands of developers. As part of Twistlock, Sonya is looking to bring the world of secure cloud native development into the hands of every developer, ensuring that they can make the most of the best cloud native technologies in a secure way.
Schedule:
Doors Open at 6 p.m.
Programming to begin at 6:30 p.m. with Q&A after.
Drinks and Light Snacks will be served.

AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - Virtual Pub Lunch: Creating an agile culture
Roll back
| description |

→ |
<p>Has traffic or location prevented you from joining an agile discussion group? Not close to PDX or SEA? Then a virtual "pub lunch" may be the answer!</p> <p>This agile lunch discussion is a collaborative effort between Seattle and Portland agile minds, and we're hoping it won't stop there.<br>TIps: The event is held on a zoom conference line. We've learned using video is best, and you might consider your environment before joining -- find a quiet space where you won't be interrupted or feel self conscious. We're monitoring chat as a back channel, so if you can't find a spot in the discussion, add your question or comment in chat and our hosts will try to work it in.</p> <p>**This weeks topic:**<br>Creating an agile culture: Is your New Year’s resolution to help your workplace feel/be more agile? Are you wondering what even IS an agile workplace culture? How do you build one, what tools do you use? How do you know IF you’ve got an agile culture? Once you’ve got it, how do you keep it rolling? Taking our queues, as usual, from the manifesto about creating a culture that supports “uncovering better ways of developing software by doing it and helping others do it.” Let’s discuss what not only make this possible but inevitable and where helping others do the same is the order of the day. Join us to share what’s worked, what you long for that is missing in your culture and any other thoughts that spring to mind when you think “Agile Culture.”</p> <p>Connect with us via Zoom!<br>Zoom Link: <a href="https://zoom.us/j/674417247" class="linkified">https://zoom.us/j/674417247</a></p> |

Portland OWASP Chapter Meeting - Building a Security Program From Nothing with Kendra Ash
Roll back
| description |

Companies are starting to build security programs with no prior experience as awareness about cyber threats increases. Often this is at a later stage when the company has a fully staffed engineering team and accumulated security debt. This talk is about how to build a security program from nothing using stakeholder analysis and risk assessments to help prioritize remediation efforts and avoid getting overwhelmed. A healthy and effective security program relies on building relationships throughout the company, enlisting security champions, and leveraging tooling and automation as effectively as possible. Kendra Ash will be sharing some of the lessons learned on our journey building a security program from scratch over the last several months.
Kendra Ash (<a href="https://twitter.com/securelykash">@securelykash</a>) is an information security engineer at Vacasa, actively building a security team and program by leveraging guidance from her network and industry standards. |

Add Augmented Reality to your design portfolio in 2019
Roll back
| description |

Description
Worldwide, there are now over a billion mobile devices with augmented reality capabilities. Augmented reality (AR) apps let people see and interact with digital content in their physical reality. Apple, Facebook, and Snapchat have pioneered early techniques and technologies to insert digital images (and interactions) on top of real-world objects, but the possibilities of these channels remain relatively unexplored.
We’re at an inflection point for user experience and interaction design. Whether or not we’ve planned for it, we’re all 3D designers now. It’s the perfect time to extend your design skills into this new reality.
Jessica Outlaw of The Extended Mind, in partnership with Torch AR is offering a half-day workshop for designers and design producers. In this hands-on training, you will develop an understanding of immersive tech, interaction design in 3D space, and existing AR use cases. During the workshop, you’ll concept, plan, and build your own AR experience prototype.
*No augmented reality experience or coding is needed. Space is limited.
Details:
Welcome 8:30 AM
Workshop 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Part 1: The state of the immersive technology today. You will demo mobile AR technology and learn about the range of use cases.
Part 2: Techniques for AR interaction design. We will compare and contrast 2D & 3D design patterns.
Part 3: Designing with Mobile AR. You will design and develop an interactive AR experience prototype for your portfolio.

This talk will focus deeply on Microsoft’s Cognitive services. We’ll look at how AI is developing and the Microsoft AI landscape, and what you need to know to become familiar with and understand AI in the world of Microsoft. We’ll look at many demos that cover the many AI facets including Vision, Speech, and Text and how these apply to real-world scenarios.
