PASCAL Hackerspace - Tools That Pwn: A Hacker Symposium
Roll back
| description |

→ |
<p>This Saturday at PASCAL we are offering a Hacker Symposium of sorts, featuring a few handy tools of the trade as well as two major frameworks often used in developing exploits and attacking systems or networks. We will be surveying several of the tools that are part of Kali, and easy to install on any Debian derived distro. It seems many folks, sometimes even the professionals already hip deep in the field of tech, are unaware of the power their packages wield! The wild hacker kidz at PASCAL are going to show you how to get started with packaged/pre-loaded tools like Burp Suite, Binwalk, Wireshark, Kismet and will also provide you with an overview of the Metasploit and Volatility frameworks. Come take your first step with Reverse Engineering at PASCAL using Binwalk! Excuse yourself and set up a proxy with Burp Suite! Breath deep and sniff packets with Kismet! Enjoy these puns and more, in person with MrDe4d, Cylon, Wireglitch and the rest of the misfit hackers of PDX this Saturday!</p> <p>We will set aside time to answer questions, and hold demonstrations of each utility discussed. This is all about what YOU want to learn!! The future workshop will be scheduled after all Q&A and demos are complete and will take place 2-4 weeks after, at which point we will continue the series until we have completed a thorough review of each tool.<br>Questions? please email MrDe4d--> [masked] or Cylon--> [masked]. We can also be found on the encrypted messaging app called Wire, which is available for desktop, Android and Apple devices (@mrdead or @wireglitch for invites to the PASCAL channel.)<br>PASCAL has snacks and drinks for some dollars and cents, though everyone is welcome to bring their own food and drink.<br>Final Note: if you RSVP and are no longer able to make it, please do take the time to change your RSVP so that someone else may attend, even if it is only an hour before! Thanks!</p> |

<p>That's right, watch some guy stand up in front of a room of people and go full commando! Whoa, don't get too excited there. I will be wearing clean...ish undergarments. By "going commando", I am referring to conducting any and all of your everyday computing tasks from the command line! Everything from being productive in an office environment to posting the twitters and streamin' the youtubes! Why, you ask? We are all hackers here aren't we? And what hacker doesn't want to look as cool in real life as we do in the movies? So come and enjoy all the typie-typie carpal tunnel goodness!</p> <p>Joe Cathell (that's Ca-THELL, not cat+hell..even though Joe is something of a crazy cat man) is an infosec professional at the Washington University in St. Louis. When he's not defending our next generation of doctors from Russian hackers (true story, ask him!), he can usually be found at the Arch Reactor Hackerspace. Joe is both a founding member of Arch Reactor and serving as the current president of the board of directors. He is also a co-organizer of the monthly STL2600 and DC314 meetup, as well as a regular presenter. He likes blue raspberry Icees, building robots and competitive butter sculpting.</p> |

PASCAL Hackerspace - Hack2Learn: Hackers, Assemble! Pt.2
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
<p>Hack2Learn: Hackers, Assemble! (Part 2)</p> <p>Hack2Learn is a bi-monthly CTF (capture the flag) meetup hosted at PASCAL in Portland, OR. PASCAL is an organization of equal opportunity hackers, and we will be introducing you to all the various types of challenges that you might face at any level, and at any time in the fields of information security and technology as a whole, for fun or profit.<br>Hacker/Tech culture and community can sometimes be a bit (or a byte ^_^) off-putting, especially to those trying to figure out what exactly it is, what we are and what we do. During this meetup at PASCAL, we welcome n00bs with open arms! Never competed in a CTF challenge before? Never even heard of CTFs? Do you have a strong desire to learn & teach alongside peers? GOOD!! You will fit right in at Hack2Learn!</p> <p>For the next Hack2Learn workshop (yes, we are finally getting this event rolling again!), we will be taking a crack at Assembly-focused CTF (Capture The Flag) challenges: specifically, the PICOCTF2018<br>Assembly 0-2. MrDe4d will be walking everyone through these challenges, step by step (pun!) so that everyone in attendance will gain theoretical as well as applicable knowledge.<br>Being able to gain control of system memory is a powerful skill, and is a gateway to understanding memory structure, how data is accessed and processed, how the OS, CPU and programs interface with one another and ultimately how to pwn. A lot of people find Assembly intimidating..and while it may seem daunting and complicated at first glance but, as with any programming language, a grasp of logic as well as dedication to learning are all that are required. In addition to walking you through every step in each challenge, a relatively quick<br>intro to Assembly will be given, hopefully demystifying it a bit for everyone. MrDe4d will cover basic syntax, instructions and conditions. As we dive deeper into each aspect of the challenges, we will continue to reiterate what has been covered with Assembly- we expect questions to be frequent and recurring. It is absolutely OK to ask the same thing more than once; PASCAL Hack2Learn is a friendly learning environment!<br>H2L has two major goals: for everyone to capture the flags, and to learn to reverse engineer. This is not a workshop focused on learning a tool, rather it is designed to get attendees thinking logically, critically & to get everyone accustomed to being uncomfortable and not knowing the answer.<br>In order to participate, attendees will need a computer running either Linux (distro of choice though for this workshop Debian flavors are recommended) or Windows with a VM for Linux, & an install of Cutter 1.7.2 (a Radare2 GUI).</p> <p>Note: Running Linux is not absolutely necessary when using Cutter. Both Windows and Mac are suitable and Cutter will run fine. Cutter still definitely has a learning curve to it.. fortunately, there is an excellent tutorial/intro on Megabeets.net!</p> <p>Questions? Email [masked] or get on the PASCAL Discord and interact with other PDX hackers (ask for invite).</p> |

PASCAL Hackerspace - AlgoBytes: Algorithms for Hackers!

| description |

<p>PASCAL Hackerspace is happy to announce a new bimonthly workshop! One of the core goals of our organization is to provide educational opportunities to people in the information security and technical communities of Portland, and with AlgoBytes we get to do exactly that!</p> <p>AlgoBytes is an informal workshop series to learn a bit more about the formal foundations of the field of computer science and about core data structures/algorithms frequently used for interviews, whether you've never explored them before or need a refresher.</p> <p>Each 90 minute session we will focus on a different topic, although we may repeat them if there are requests to revisit material. Currently there will be 20-30 minutes of presentation, a walk through of a problem, followed by breaking into small groups to practice. Attending sequential events is probably helpful if the material is new to you, but not required.</p> <p>First Session's Theme: Analysis Foundations</p> <p>What is an algorithm, besides a scary word?<br>I'm a practical person, why do I care?<br>What is a data structure?<br>What is complexity analysis?<br>What is Big O? Big Theta? Big Omega?<br>How do I apply them?</p> <p>Please bring your preferred note-taking device(s) and preferred scratch paper.</p> <p>A laptop with your editor & language of choice may be handy for trying out your solutions- especially important if you are prepping for technical interviews, but is not at all required.</p> <p>The PASCAL board is excited to be hosting this event alongside a very accomplished and brilliant woman in security-</p> <p>Allison Marie Naaktgeboren is a Senior Software Engineer. She has previously written (and regretted) code at Mozilla, Amazon, Cisco, FactSet Research Systems, and the Biorobotics Laboratory in Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute. Allison holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.</p> <p>Allison is a mentor in the PDXWiT mentorship program, supports the Women Who Code Portland Algorithms track, and mentors high school students in robotics and programming (Go Rebel @lliance!) She is a member of PASCAL & the OWASP Portland chapter.</p> |

Description
csv,conf,v4 is a community driven data conference. Its an event thats not literally about CSV file format, but rather about what CSV represents in regards to our wider community ideals (data interoperability, hackability, simplicity, etc.).
Keeping with previous csv conferences, we have put together a heavily curated program that maintains an unconference feel. This will include quick, rapid fire, 20-minute presentations hand selected by the program committee. Talks will be about a range of data-related topics from a diverse range of speakers. Our focus this year is connecting key areas of open science, data journalism, and open government with the wider data software/tools community.
Propose a Talk (due Feb 9, 2019)
Registration Fees. We are a non-profit, community-run conference. Ticket sales pay for catering/venue costs and travel support for speakers/attendees. While csv, conf prides itself on hosting all that are interested, we appreciate registrants choosing the highest teir you or your institution can afford. Honor system. Note: All fees are charged in US dollars.
csv,conf,v4 is about bringing a diverse group together to discuss data topics. There are a limited number of travel awards and comp registrations available for those unable to pay. Please contact [email protected] or any organizer for more information.

Job Application Secrets: Nine Common Mistakes Candidates Make
A hiring manager at any given tech company in Portland receives hundreds of applications for an open position in Sales, Marketing, Operations, or Administration. More than half of the received applications are discarded immediately, or soon after, due to simple (and preventable!) mistakes that applicants routinely make. During this presentation we’ll cover the 9 most common mistakes applicants make on their cover letters, resumes, email responses, phone screens, and in-person interviews that disqualify them from the applicant pool. A successful job application means successfully marketing and selling yourself to the company—and in this presentation marketer Carly J. Cais shows you how to jump through each job application hoop successfully. Getting a job is ultimately 10% luck and 90% meeting the company’s criteria, but coming to this presentation will help you ace that 90%. You can get in the room with the decision-makers...and ultimately get HIRED.

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. <p>This week we dove head first into conditionals. This should feel like a natural progression from the logical operators we had been using before. We are going to try a new format this week where we will do a short recap followed by group collaboration where we will be doing select problems from the problem set. We will use these to drive our discussion of the weeks topics.</p> <p>This means you do not have to kill yourself to complete the problem sets prior although I encourage you to do so. If you get stumped please feel free to suggest it as one of the problems you would like to go over during our session.</p> <p>A lot of times there is parking right in front of the building. If this is not the case I recommend trying 1st, 2nd, or 3rd Ave. There are usually spots down that way. Parking isn't free until after 7pm so don't forget to pay! There is also a lot right next door if you don't want to mess with street parking.</p> <p>As always feel free to message me or post on Slack if you have any questions. Hope to see you Tuesday!</p> <p>* New to our group? Need to join our Slack channel? Looking for free resources? Check out our website @ www.pdxpythonpirates.org for all of that and more!</p> |

Join a Team for IDEO.org's 9-Week Course for Human-Centered Design
Roll back
| description |

In January, IDEO.org and +Acumen will once again be offering their highly regarded free 9-week online course, Design Kit: Course for Human-Centered Design. As we've done often in the past, Portland Community Design Thinkers will be hosting a special meetup on Jan. 16 to help facilitate the creation of teams for all members who wish to join the course.
Created by IDEO.org for those who are relatively new to design thinking, +Acumen's free Design Kit: Course for Human-Centered Design is probably one of the best and most immersive resources anywhere for getting up to speed on the nuts and bolts of HCD. This meetup is specifically for those interested in learning more about the course and helping to form working teams. Please note PCDT is *not* managing this course -- you'll be on your own for that. But we're keen to give anyone interested a leg up in getting off to the best possible start with a group of other eager local participants, and participants are welcome to use our own Slack channel for course communication and organizing, as many groups have previously done.
Read more about the course at the below link.
In brief, it's a nine-week online FREE curriculum that will introduce participants to the concepts of human-centered design and how this approach can be used to create innovative, effective, and sustainable solutions.
During those nine weeks, you'll work online (and off) with a group of 2-6 people, learning the HCD process by applying it to one of three pre-crafted real world design challenges. (You'll also have a choice to craft your own challenge.) Each week you will explore the fundamental concepts through readings, case studies, and short videos. Then you'll meet in-person with your design team to get your hands dirty practicing the relevant human-centered design methods.
Let's get as many teams together as we can for the next course! Read more at this link: http://www.plusacumen.org/courses/introduction-human-centered-design |

Addictive By Design: How Our Phones Hijacked Our Lives and What We Can Do About It [Portland Community Design Thinkers]
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
One thing that became abundantly clear in 2018 is that our relationships with our phones, and digital technologies in general, began to seem less like a partnership and more like an indentured servitude.
The zeitgeist last year was saturated with terms like “digital attention crisis,” “distraction addiction,” “mindful tech,” ethical technology,” and “time well spent.” When, in August, Facebook and Instagram introduced a new dashboard to tell us how long we’ve spent inside their apps, they were responding to a groundswell of concern that these apps are hijacking our attention in ways that are not aligned with users’ best interests but, rather, mainly with the interests of advertisers. “Engagement,” the chief currency of Silicon Valley since the first personalized ad appeared, has become inextricably linked with the hidden design practices that prioritize user time on platform above all other considerations. As a result, we’ve all begun to feel the pinch of “the cost of free.”
In 2018 some of us started pushing back. People like former Google Design Ethicist Tristan Harris and groups like the Center for Humane Technology sought to make our digital tools more human-centered, more accountable and maybe a little less less powerful -- and their views flipped from fringe to the mainstream in what has been called a “techlash.”
On January 29, we’ll gather for a hands-on look at how design is at the heart of this issue: the bottomless newsfeeds, the limited menu choices, the proliferating Autoplay function, notifications set to “ON” by default, and all the intermittent variable rewards that turn our phones into slot machines with dopamine payouts.
We’ll examine our own relationships to our devices and the apps we can’t stop looking at. And we’ll explore what a truly human-centered digital ecosystem could look like.
PCDT organizer Patrick Sharbaugh will be joined by Dr. Dan Rubin, a Portland clinical psychologist who specializes in mindfulness-based psychotherapy and is an adjunct professor of psychology of Maitripa College, where he teaches courses on the intersection of psychology and Buddhism. Dan and Patrick are both active members of the Community for Humane Technology, the outreach arm of the Center for Humane Technology whose aim is to align technology to humanity's best interests.
Bring your mobile device. You’ll need it!

Join Women Who Code Portland for our first Networking Night of 2019! We’re starting the year off with a theme that is very important to our mission of inspiring women to excel in technology careers: “What Drives You to Stay Working in Tech?” Women from Ampere Computing will discuss their own inspirations, achievements, and career path through the tech industry. For this event, we are hoping to remind all of our members what makes technology so exciting, and what one can do to continue to grow and thrive in their career.
Our panel will feature:
- Neerbhee Verma - Principal Engineer
- Annie Duong - Senior Engineering Design Manager
- Rashmi Wadwa - Principal Engineer
- Beth Gordon - Developer Advocate
AGENDA
5:30 - 6:15 PM – Doors Open + Networking
6:15 - 6:30 PM – Welcome from Renee James, CEO of Ampere Computing, and WWCode Portland
6:30 - 7:30 PM – Panel + Q&A from the audience
7:30 - 8:00 PM – Networking + Closing Remarks
OUR SPEAKERS
Neerbhee Verma is a principal engineer focusing on logic design and micro-architecture. Before joining Ampere, she designed custom cores for Snapdragon (mobile) and Centriq (server) chips at Qualcomm for nearly 15 years. She has a Masters in Computer Engineering from North Carolina State University.
Annie Duong recently joined Ampere as a senior engineering design manager. Prior, she worked at Intel for 17 years with an expertise in CPU logic and circuit design. In addition to her technical work, her passion has been in people, so she job-shaped the role Chief of People Operations to focus on organizational culture and diversity and inclusion. She was a board member of the Oregon chapter of the Women at Intel Network (WIN) and co-chair of the annual WIN conference. She is happy to share her journey and the decision to move back into tech at Ampere as she aspires to inspire the next generation of tech female leaders and work towards an inclusive environment.
Rashmi Wadwa is an Electrical Engineering graduate from Oklahoma State University. Before joining Ampere, she worked on mobile and server CPU front-end design with Qualcomm in Raleigh, North Carolina for 6 years. More recently she switched gears, moving from the East Coast to the West Cost for a new career challenge: L2 cache design. She’s really excited and looking forward to the new venture. In her spare time, she likes to cook, climb, ski and dance.
Beth Gordon joined Ampere in December as a developer advocate. Before that, she worked at Intel for nearly a decade in roles as a Linux systems administrator and technical marketing engineer. She holds dual degrees in Environmental Science and Spanish from Oregon State University. In her spare time, she does science communication via her dog (https://www.instagram.com/spacewhippet/) on Instagram.

AgilePDX User Group - Portland Metro - Create Your 2019 Vision Board
Roll back

<p>Join us for a "Create Your Vision Board" session to start the new year!</p> <p>A Vision Board (aka dream board, treasure map, action board…) is a collage of images, pictures, and affirmations of one’s intentions and visions for the future, designed to serve as a source of inspiration and motivation. As a friend put it, “It’s a way of aligning intention with attention.” Get your hands on your goal setting.</p> <p>Creating a Vision Board is a perfect activity whether you’re seeking something new in your life (job, living situation, relationship, etc.), or want to put what you have in a better balance, or want to have fun setting goals for what comes next!</p> <p>Diana Larsen will give a context for set up, offer a few words of guidance, and supply materials including magazines to cut up, images already clipped, the best glue, some blank poster boards, and a few past boards as examples. There will be a basket for donations to help with materials expenses.</p> <p>You will bring:<br>1) your own scissors for cutting paper (necessary)<br>2) a couple of magazines that capture your interest (optional) Note: Photo and graphic filled materials work better than text heavy ones.<br>3) a poster board or cardboard for collaging (also optional) Note: In addition to posters, you can turn leftover heavy cardboard shoeboxes into effective reminders (and storage!) through collage. Also blank books.<br>4) your preferred snacks and a sack lunch to help your inspiration and sustain your energy.</p> <p>We’ll have room for about 12-14 people.</p> <p>For more information about Vision Boarding, check out <a href="https://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Vision-Board" class="linkified">https://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Vision-Board</a>. Also a search on Vision Board images will bring up many examples. Yours doesn’t need to look like any of them.</p> <p>If you aren't going to be able to make it, please update your RSVP so that we know how many to expect.</p> <p>Parking:<br>Use the Gotham Building Parking lot on the corner of N Page St and N Borthwick Ave.</p> <p>Building Entry:<br>Entry to the building is best through the door by Little Gotham Coffee. We'll have someone meeting on time attendees at the door. For those that run a few minutes late due to traffic or other reasons out of your control, there will be directions at the door on how to contact someone to let you in.</p> <p>Weather Policy:<br>Cancellations will be posted on MeetUp and Calagater 3 hours before event time. We will not have the event in ice, or snowy conditions.</p> <p>Percipio Consulting Group is opening up their offices to host this event.</p> <p>Percipio is a business consulting firm that helps companies identify opportunities for improvement and successfully implement meaningful changes. That means more efficient processes, shored-up controls, a technology solution that really works for you, or all of the above. They have helped many companies, both Fortune 500 and mid-sized, navigate complex projects by truly understanding business needs and defining up front what success will look like.</p> |

For people working in startups or around the startup scene, Startup Coffee Hour is a 1-hour agendaless and speakerless event where you’ll meet new people and have the opportunity to talk about what you care about.
We're running this event over Meetaway -- the format is back-to-back 1on1 conversations over video call where you'll have the ability to choose who you meet. It's an efficient way to digest a thought with other entrepreneurs and get back to your day.
RSVP and we'll send you a link to join.
