Public Tech Talk: "Security-Aware Cyber-Physical Systems with Varying Levels of Autonomy" by Dr. Miroslav Pajic
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Increasing set of functionalities, network interoperability, and system design complexity have introduced easily exploitable security vulnerabilities in cyber-physical systems (CPS). Furthermore, the tight interaction between information technology and physical world, as well as the rising levels of autonomy, make these systems vulnerable to attacks beyond the standard cyber-attacks; relying exclusively on conventional security techniques may be unfeasible due to resource-constraints and long system lifetime. Consequently, there is a need to change the way we reason about security in CPS, and start designing platform-aware attack-resilient components and architectures capable providing strong safety and performance guarantees even under attack. In this talk, I will present research challenges and our recent efforts in this domain, starting from cyber-physical security techniques that (a) capture effects of attacks on system performance, (b) introduce attack-resilience into components at each level of the autonomy stack, and (c) enable mapping of the desired Quality-of-Control (QoC) under attack guarantees into real-time platform requirements in way that supports design-time tradeoffs between the QoC under attack and security-related overhead. For systems with varying levels of autonomy and human interaction, I will also show how we can exploit human power of inductive reasoning and the ability to provide context, to improve the overall security guarantees. Finally, I will present how we can capture security-related CPS specification as hyperproperties, and introduce statistical model checking methods to check such specifications. |

TiE Oregon Pitch Club
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Pitch Club - Mock Investor Meeting is a meeting in which entrepreneurs learn the criteria and methods used by real investors to evaluate their venture as a potential investment. This is done by recreating (simulating) a typical, actual meeting of investors during which a few pre-screened companies seeking investment present their company, or “Pitch” the company, as a possible investment. These meetings follow the same basic agenda of three sections: the pitch, Q&A, and investor Discussion & Decision).
Who facilitates Pitch Club?
Pitch Club is organized by Kari Naone, TiE Oregon Executive Director and led by Tom Kingsley, a TiE Charter Member who is an investor and successful entrepreneur.
What to expect?
Each attendee who intends to pitch should prepare a five minute pitch presentation. (This can include a power point projection that will be presented from your computer.) Directly after pitching a five-minute Q&A will take place, followed by a five-minute Investor Discussion & Decision).
Those who attend pitch club will walk away with a better understanding of what investors look for in a pitch and how to answer the questions possible investor will ask. In addition, each presenter will receive a digital copy of their pitch and feedback from their peers and TiE Charter Members. |

TiE Oregon Women - Pitch Competition
Roll back
| description |

TiE Women is dedicated to Embrace, Engage and Empower women entrepreneurs across the globe.
TiE Oregon is hosting its first TiE Women Pitch Competition on September 2nd. This will be a virtual event and the same as our regular Pitch Competitions, with one twist: all the participating companies must have a woman in their Founding team.
The winner will get the opportunity to attend the TiE Global Mega Pitch Competition in Dubai in December where they will compete for a $100k prize against women-led startups from all over the world. Three Runners-up will also be selected for an accelerator workshop.
Our Committee will review the applications and select six finalists (and two back-ups) to present on stage. We pair each of the finalists with a team of TiE Charter Members for coaching and mentoring in the run-up to the Pitch Competition. While using this resource isn’t mandatory, we have found that the most successful companies engage with and use the feedback from their “champions.” |

Talk about Community Management. Do you run a Meetup group, Facebook group, Online group, support community, or other type of community-based group? We are a collection of professionals sharing information related to the art of Community Management. Join Us!
There are a lot of fund raising strategies for your community group. As your community grows you may need to raise funds and you might look at utilizing the vendors in your community as funding sources.
In this presentation and discussion, we will talk about:
- The breadth of fundraising strategies by communities, and typical revenue models
- Considerations of legally incorporating as a 501c3 vs other options
- Identifying vendors in your community and evaluating their financial potential
- Tips doing outreach to vendors when asking for money
- Understanding what vendors want in exchange for money, and possible ways to balance the interests of everyone
- Objections your vendors might have and ways to negotiate
Bring your experience working with vendors and sponsors. Where have you found success, what horror stories do you have, and think about how we can help other communities do this better. |

This is a joint event organized by the [IEEE Oregon Communication Society](https://www.ieee-oregon.org/) and the [Portland Chapter of the Society for Information Management (SIM)](http://simpdx.org/). This event is free and open to the Public

**Abstract:**
Wi-Fi is an outstanding success story. Although it has been around for decades, it continues to evolve by adding new functionalities, improving performance, and delivering new services. It is difficult to imagine going one day without Wi-Fi. In this talk, we will discuss the latest generation of Wi-Fi technology, namely, Wi-Fi 6. Wi-Fi 6 is a revolution compared to any of the previous Wi-Fi generations because it introduces capabilities that are essential to support a much denser number of devices per access point, best-in-class security, greater capacity, and lower latency. We will cover some performance characteristics of Wi-Fi 6, provide a market update, and conclude with future directions towards Wi-Fi 7.
**Biography:**
Dr. Carlos Cordeiro is the CTO of wireless connectivity at Intel Corporation, where he is responsible for next-generation wireless connectivity technology strategy, standards, ecosystem engagements, and regulatory. In the Wi-Fi Alliance, he is a member of the Board of Directors and serves as its Technical Advisor. Due to his contributions to wireless communications, Dr. Cordeiro received several awards including the prestigious Intel Inventor of the Year Award in 2016, the 2017 IEEE Standards Medallion, the IEEE Outstanding Engineer Award in 2011, and the IEEE New Face of Engineering Award in 2007. Dr. Cordeiro is the co-author of two textbooks on wireless published in 2006 and 2011, has published over 100 papers in the wireless area alone, and holds over 250 patents. He has served as Editor of various journals including the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, the IEEE Wireless Communication Letters, and the ACM Mobile Computing and Communications Review journal. Dr. Cordeiro is an IEEE Fellow. |

PDXWIT Presents Product Management Panel: Deliberate stakeholder communication

***Registration through Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_QSYbNRCsTzW5B4xiDrAKcQ is required to gain entry to this virtual event***
Join us for a panel discussion on Product Management. Our focus will be deliberate stakeholder communication and why it is more important now than ever before. Meaningfully communicating throughout an organization is at the core of what product managers do and is 100% crucial to the success of a team.
However, having effective conversations to drive progress of a product can be challenging. What are ways you can establish two-way communication with internal and external stakeholders? How do you identify when your communications are failing so you can course-correct? How can you virtually recreate random hallway conversations when you are no longer working from the same physical space? How do you communicate in a matrixed organization when you work with people who are not stakeholders? We’ll cover these topics and more to find compelling communication strategies for you to use at companies of any size. Product managers, those thinking about starting a career in product management, or folks who interface with product managers will all benefit from this discussion.
The panel discussion will feature:
Moderator: Arezou Seifpour, Product Lead at Auxon
Panelist: Ariel Aguilar, Senior Product Manager at Nike
Panelist: Sadie Dickman, Product Director at Kaplan North America
Panelist: Katrina Sperry, Product Manager at Gabbi
Agenda:
12:00 p.m. - PDXWIT and host welcome
12:05 p.m. - Panelist introductions
12:10 p.m. - Panel discussion
12:45 p.m. - Q&A
1:00 p.m. - Event ends
Purpose:
PDXWIT encourages women, non-binary and underrepresented people to join and stay in tech.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect or how to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this virtual seminar led by engineers at Amazon Web Services (AWS), we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
- Morning preparation, attire, mindset
- Preparation for the non-technical parts
- How to study for the coding interview
- How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 50.
Agenda:
11:30 a.m. - Doors open
11:35 a.m. - Introductions and announcements
11:40 a.m. - Session begins
1:00 p.m. - Session ends
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |
