create Calagator::Event 1250478020 Portland Linux/Unix Group: The Transit Appliance Project Roll back

description nil Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting Announcement Who: Chris Smith
What: The Transit Appliance Project
Where: Zoom, flawed as it is, link below
When: Thursday, January 6th, 2022 at 7pm
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom This talk will explore the history and future of the Transit Appliance project, an open source project which makes use of TriMet and other public web services to display transit arrivals on fixed location screens in apartment and office lobbies, cafes, schools and other community locations. The project is hosted by the non-profit Portland Transport and currently operates more than 60 screens around the region. The project relies on Raspberry Pi processors and a variety of cloud services to provide a minimal cost solution to the display of transit and micromobility information. About Chris Chris Smith is the lead developer of the non-profit, open source Transit Appliance project. For two decades his day job was leading web architecture for Xerox. He serves on the board of Portland Streetcar Inc. and also served for twelve years on the Portland Planning and Sustainability Commission. His passion is the intersection of technology and sustainable urban policy. Returning to Zoom for now PLUG aims to dogfood free and open source technologies whenever possible and Jit.si had a good run. It is quirky and very difficult to manage as a moderator, but it is free software. Recording meetings proved unworkable but thank you Vincent for spinning up a Jit.si VM during a meeting *and* removing the watermark. Many colleagues have reported that web-based Zoom is working better than ever with free and open source desktop operating systems and for the success of PLUG and my sanity as a moderator, I need to use the best tool for the job. Please continue to send your ideas for better tools and I would not rule out moving to a solution that someone is willing to take ownership of, as Vincent did with the Jit.si VM. https://us06web.zoom.us/j/85249530401?pwd=dWZPTllGRk1udWtVRXB0STZ2VlJXZz09 Meeting ID: 852 4953 0401 Passcode: 8675309 One tap mobile +13462487799,,85249530401# US (Houston) +17207072699,,85249530401# US (Denver) PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings.

create Calagator::Event 1250478013 Surveillance technologies policy development codesign event Roll back

description nil Join us to discuss and contribute to the development of the City’s surveillance technologies policy by exploring what surveillance technologies are and how Portlanders can have better control of technology being deployed and used in the city. In this codesign event, attendees will have the opportunity to learn about existing city policies on privacy and digital justice, and contribute to the city surveillance policy development and outcomes that are going to inform the policy. Listen to an introductory presentation from City staff to learn about surveillance technologies policy development and how other communities define Community Control over Surveillance Technologies (CCOS). Join other participants in breakout rooms to explore: - An updated definition of surveillance technologies considering emergent tech and impacts in the Portland community - What Community Control over Surveillance Technologies (CCOS) governance could look like in Portland - Listen to other participants and share your experiences for how surveillance technologies impact residents and visitors in Portland This event is open to all Portlanders and is organized in collaboration with Smart City PDX, the City of Portland's Office of Equity and Human Rights, PDX Privacy, and Cascadia Partners. Background on City of Portland privacy and surveillance policy development: The City of Portland is working on developing a comprehensive surveillance/ privacy policy. This policy will create the transparency and accountability processes for use and purchase of surveillance technologies. It will also define roles and responsibilities for decision making, oversight, and implementing aspects of this policy. The Smart City PDX program and the Office of Equity and Human Rights are coordinating policy development actions, including policy drafting, City of Portland agencies coordination, and public engagement. These policies need to be informed by those most impacted. Negative impacts of surveillance technologies are disproportionately experienced by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities. Abuses derived from surveillance technologies can endanger people’s freedoms, civil rights, and liberties. Existing Portland policies define surveillance technologies as any software, electronic device, system utilizing an electronic device, or similar used, designed, or primarily intended to collect, retain, analyze, process, or share audio, electronic, visual, location, thermal, olfactory, biometric, or similar information specifically associated with, or capable of being associated with, any individual or group. This definition covers certain surveillance technologies; however, emergent technologies, including artificial intelligence and predictive inference algorithms, are not necessarily covered by this definition. The City is exploring an updated definition of surveillance technologies that includes these new and emergent information technologies. Read more about the policy roadmap and engagement plan here: https://www.smartcitypdx.com/news/2021/8/11/the-city-of-portland-starts-the-work-developing-its-surveillance-policy

description nil Join grassroots bicycle transportation advocates and open data / open government / open code folks to work on collaborative mapping and resolution of transportation safety issues. Everyone is welcome whether you have years of programming / tech experience or just a few pictures of dirty bike lanes and broken sidewalks. This month, we'll have a presentation on this nifty data appliance and an update on other tech/data projects BikeLoud folks have been working on. Some of this will overlap with the speed camera software we looked at before, and is a good intro to the raspberry pi platform if you've been looking for an excuse to do something with one. The Transit Appliance is an open source project which makes use of TriMet and other public web services to display transit arrivals on fixed location screens in apartment and office lobbies, cafes, schools and other community locations. The project is hosted by the non-profit Portland Transport and currently operates more than 60 screens around the region. The project is looking for volunteers to refresh the technology stack for the project and to help find additional community locations for screens. Project leader Chris Smith will describe the technology architecture and social purpose of the project.

There's also a Phoenix application which provides an interface to the audio processing layer. The project is a simple experiment but touches on a number of concepts which might be interesting: NIFs in Elixir, Rust threads, Phoenix channels and Umbrella application design. - Josh Chernoff - Talk TBD - Paul Rogers - Die, UUID, Die! Or maybe not. This talk will explore the features and changes involved in switching a system from Pulseaudio to Pipwire for audio device management. The new Pipewire daemon promises to improve the state of audio playback on Linux but with this change comes questions regarding the impact to different users and use cases. In this talk I'll go over the impact Pipewire can have for various different users and provide a basic configuration for those brave enough to give it a try. I will also outline some of the history surrounding the audio stack in Linux with a focus on how Pipewire plans to implement new features while maintaining compatibility with older applications. description nil Please join us as we welcome Tobias Read, Candidate for Oregon Governor. Tobias Read has always made investing in our future his priority. In the legislature, he was a leader in passing full-day kindergarten and establishing Oregon’s rainy day fund. As Treasurer, he made it possible for tens of thousands of Oregonians to save for retirement and college. And he helped grow our economy and cut Wall Street fees, saving Oregonians more than a half a billion dollars. As Governor, Tobias will bring people together to build a better future. Oregon cannot continue to lurch from one crisis to the next. We need leaders who are focused on the next generation, not the next election. Rethink Education by expanding the school year and creating universal pre-K. Build Job Skills by expanding apprenticeships and vocational training programs Protect Oregon’s Natural Resources by tackling climate change and creating clean energy jobs Grow the Economy by supporting small businesses and creating opportunity in rural Oregon
