Please join us for our inaugural meeting!
Meeting topic: Continuous Integration Using Rational Team Concert
Rational Team Concert integrates source control and build and allows developers to execute automated tests as part of the build. This presentation describes how to use RTC's capabilities such as streams, workspaces, snapshots, continuous builds and personal builds to implement continuous integration.
Pete Steinfeld has worked for IBM since 2003 when IBM acquired Rational Software. He's worked with build and install technology since 2001. He currently manages a team which maintains over 150 daily builds for 20 different Rational product teams. Pete's team has worked with Rational Team Concert since its inception and has helped several development teams migrate their builds and development to it. |

Note change of meeting location! This month we are at ELC Technlogies, at NW 18th and Pettygrove. Beer and pizza are being provided by ELC (thanks!).
The topic this month is Source Code Control. Steve Riggins will talk about git, Simran Gleason will talk about Subversion, and if he's available Dave Camp will talk about Mercurial. The idea is not to compare and contrast the options but merely to have someone who is a fan of each tell us the good, bad and ugly about their chosen SCC method.
Assuming the iPhone Learning project is over at this point (it could get delayed again if summer slows people down), we'll return to having an open Q&A session after the meeting, followed by/continued over beer. |

PRESENTATION
Rapid Discussions
on
Any Topic
by
Anyone & Everyone
Instead of having a formal presentation, we will get together and
discuss anything anyone wants to discuss in brief sessions of no
more than a few minutes each. If we have enough people involved
we can break into smaller groups to handle each topic.
AND YES - We are looking for speakers for upcoming months.
We have been having trouble finding speakers lately.
Volunteers and Recommendations are welcome.

Please join us Tuesday night for the PADNUG September meet-up!
Michael Kennedy will be presenting on asynchronous programming futures for .NET: This session will take a peek into the future and examine some of the features proposed for C# 5.0. This includes studying async methods which are part of C# 5.0 and build on the PFx Task library. We will also briefly look at the PFx Task libraries to gain the necessary background for working with the new language features. Note that Visual Basic 11 will also have these identical features so in essence we'll be covering VB 11 as well.

AgilePDX Downtown Pub Lunch

This month Adam Light will briefly reprise his Agile 2011 presentation for us over lunch. Adam’s talk “Chasing the constraint beyond the development team” is abstracted below:
Successfully adopting agile methods creates a high likelihood that the constraint in your value chain will migrate from software development to another business process. As your agile journey proceeds, more agile won’t necessarily deliver continued improvements! Unfortunately, systemic improvement often takes considerable time and effort, and your agile effort may be seriously impaired while you work to improve a constraint that lies beyond your control. This session will address methods for identifying, predicting, and responding to organizational constraints beyond the development team.
Come lunch with us and exchange news from the conference!
We’ll be at Paddy’s Bar and Grill. We have a table reserved in the back room from 11:45 to 1:15.
Bring a colleague who hasn’t come before. It’s always great to meet new agile advocates. |

DorkbotPDX group show - SUSPENSION/DIS/CONNECTION
Roll back
| description |
<b>---~~~=== DORKBOT PDX GROUP SHOW 2011 ===~~~---</b>
DorkbotPDX (http://dorkbotpdx.org) is seeking works from people doing strange
things with electricity for a group gallery show opening September 1, 2011 at
the Styloid Process gallery (http://styloid-process.com).
The opening will be part of Portland's first Thursday art walk and will show
through the month of September. Works will be curated by the gallery owner
and DorkbotPDX overlords.
The deadline for submissions is July 15th, 11:59pm.
Primary preference will be given to works loosely classified as "electronic".
Secondary preference will be given to work on the principles of:
<b>DIS/CONNECTION and SUSPENSION</b>:
(bastardized from Merriam Webster)
<b>Connection:</b>
a : causal, logical, or contextual relation, sequence, or association
b : a relation of personal intimacy
c : coherence, continuity
d : something that connects/communicates : link/transport
e : a source of contraband (as illegal drugs)
<b>Suspension:</b>
a : the state of being hung
b : temporary removal (as from office or privileges)
c : temporary withholding (as of belief or decision)
d : temporary revocation of a law or rule
e : a carried-over musical tone which results in momentary dissonance
f : stoppage of payment of business obligations
g : a rhetorical device whereby the principal idea is deferred to the end of
a sentence or longer unit
This is a smallish gallery, so one of the goals is to abuse the vertical space.
Ceiling, shelf-mounted, and hanging works experienced from below are
blisteringly encouraged.
Artists should submit a brief (3-5 sentence) description of the work,
dimensions, power/facilities requirements, and a 1 sentence bio or self-
deprecating statement. Please provide photos, videos, and/or URLs as
applicable.
Please send submissions/questions to:

Google MashUp in Portland: Map Maker & Places
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Google Map Maker is a web application that enables individuals to add and edit details on Google Maps. These edits, once reviewed for accuracy, go live on Google Maps and Google Earth, including mobile versions, for millions of people to see... in your community and beyond.
Google Places is a local recommendation engine that helps connect people with places they like based on their personal tastes.
The Google Map Maker Team and the Google Places Team are having a joint event at Ecotrust on Thursday, September 1st, from 6:00PM - 9:00PM. This event will include an interactive Map Maker workshop (“MapUp”) and a demonstration on how to provide quality reviews for establishments in and around the Portland Area. Come learn about Map Maker and Places, ask questions, make some edits, review some places, and learn how these applications can help your community. We'll also have some delicious snacks and prizes.
PRIZES: We'll be giving out Map Maker t-shirts for those who map, and Google Places will announce a chance for you to win a Chromebook.
RSVP is required at this website: http://goo.gl/luJr7
Some important details:
- INVITE OTHERS & RSVP: This event is by reservation only, please RSVP and feel free to pass the invitation along to others.
- BRING A LAPTOP: this is a workshop, not a long boring presentation. A big chunk of the time will involve everyone mapping together and using Google Places. |

Cancelled: High-end Throughput With Low-end Hardware: A Case Study Using Cassandra
Roll back
| description |
Identifying fraud and suspicious activity on the Internet is all about data. iovation protects its customers by analyzing devices performing high value transactions and recommending an action in real-time based on past activity. ApacheCassandra can consume and analyze a ridiculous amount of data while keeping costs low.
At iovation an implementation using Cassandra currently supports 10,000 read/write operations per second on a cluster storing over 1 billion rows in 500GB, Cassandra makes this solution horizontally scalable, highly available, recoverable, and cheap (under $20k).
In this presentation Darin will cover some of the other options his team explored, hardware choices that were made, and the more interesting tunables Cassandra offers that allow you to squeeze IOPS out of your cluster.
Presenter: Darin Glatt, Principal Application Architec, iovation
Darin Glatt is software developer with over 10 years experience working with large-scale distributed systems. He is currently the Application Architect for iovation where he helps fight fraud, account take over, and identity theft on the Internet by tracking device reputation and suspicious activity in real-time. Prior to taking on the bad guys of the Internet, Darin helped build a massively multi-player blackjack game for the UltimateBet platform and developed MetroOnes nationwide VoIP network, the backbone of their 411 offering. |

Galois Tech Talk: Leveraging Emerging Storage Functionality for New Security Services
Roll back
| description |

Presented by Kevin Butler
The complexity of modern operating systems makes securing them a challenging problem. However, changes in the computing model, such as the rise of cloud computing and smarter peripherals, have presented opportunities to reconsider system architectures, as we move from traditional "stove-pipe" computing to distributed systems. In particular, we can build trustworthy components that act to provide security in complex systems.
This talk discusses how new disk architectures may be exploited to aid the protection of systems by acting as policy decision and enforcement points. We prototype disks that enforce data immutability at the block level on critical system data, preventing malicious code from inserting itself into system configuration and boot files. We then examine how storage may be used to ensure the integrity state of hosts prior to allowing access to data, and how such a design improves the security of portable storage devices. Using continual measurements of system state, we show through formal reasoning that such a device enforces guarantees that data is read and written while the host is in a good state. Finally, we discuss some recent initiatives to assure the identity of the host and identify future directions for exploring the interface between storage and operating system security.
