update Calagator::Event 1250460862 Cancelled: High-end Throughput With Low-end Hardware: A Case Study Using Cassandra Roll back

description Identifying fraud and suspicious activity on the Internet is all about data. iovation protects its customers by analyzing devices performing high value transactions and recommending an action in real-time based on past activity. ApacheCassandra can consume and analyze a ridiculous amount of data while keeping costs low. At iovation an implementation using Cassandra currently supports 10,000 read/write operations per second on a cluster storing over 1 billion rows in 500GB, Cassandra makes this solution horizontally scalable, highly available, recoverable, and cheap (under $20k). In this presentation Darin will cover some of the other options his team explored, hardware choices that were made, and the more interesting tunables Cassandra offers that allow you to squeeze IOPS out of your cluster. Presenter: Darin Glatt, Principal Application Architec, iovation Darin Glatt is software developer with over 10 years experience working with large-scale distributed systems. He is currently the Application Architect for iovation where he helps fight fraud, account take over, and identity theft on the Internet by tracking device reputation and suspicious activity in real-time. Prior to taking on the bad guys of the Internet, Darin helped build a massively multi-player blackjack game for the UltimateBet platform and developed MetroOnes nationwide VoIP network, the backbone of their 411 offering. create Calagator::Event 1250461242 Galois Tech Talk: Leveraging Emerging Storage Functionality for New Security Services Roll back

description nil Presented by Kevin Butler The complexity of modern operating systems makes securing them a challenging problem. However, changes in the computing model, such as the rise of cloud computing and smarter peripherals, have presented opportunities to reconsider system architectures, as we move from traditional "stove-pipe" computing to distributed systems. In particular, we can build trustworthy components that act to provide security in complex systems. This talk discusses how new disk architectures may be exploited to aid the protection of systems by acting as policy decision and enforcement points. We prototype disks that enforce data immutability at the block level on critical system data, preventing malicious code from inserting itself into system configuration and boot files. We then examine how storage may be used to ensure the integrity state of hosts prior to allowing access to data, and how such a design improves the security of portable storage devices. Using continual measurements of system state, we show through formal reasoning that such a device enforces guarantees that data is read and written while the host is in a good state. Finally, we discuss some recent initiatives to assure the identity of the host and identify future directions for exploring the interface between storage and operating system security.

Sunday 07/31 4:00pm - Evening Possibly dinner in Bend, return to Portland (4.5 hour drive) Portland's premier rocket club is scheduling a public rocket launch in the Oregon high desert. This is the fourth launch of our third generation rocket. We expect to reach about 14,000 feet and to break the sound barrier! It's a 12 foot tall aluminum and fiberglass rocket that burns almost 15 pounds of fuel! If you've never seen a large(ish) rocket launch this could be your chance! This will be very similar to our last launch in October, but with new flight computer electronics. Read about our last launch here: http://psas.pdx.edu/news/2010-10-17-2/ Brothers is a long way from anywhere, we come in on Saturday and camp. You're welcome to join us. For the less adventurous (there are no amenities, bring your own water and food) you can stay in Bend and drive in -- it's about 45 minutes -- on Sunday morning. update Calagator::Event 1250461233 Tech Talk: Modular verification of preemptive OS kernels Roll back

description Presented by Alexey Gotsman Most major OS kernels today run on multiprocessor systems and are preemptive: it is possible for a process running in the kernel mode to get descheduled. Existing modular techniques for verifying concurrent code are not directly applicable in this setting: they rely on scheduling being implemented correctly, and in a preemptive kernel, the correctness of the scheduler is interdependent with the correctness of the code it schedules. This interdependency is even stronger in mainstream kernels, such as Linux, FreeBSD or XNU, where the scheduler and processes interact in complex ways. In this talk I will present the first logic that is able to decompose the verification of preemptive multiprocessor kernel code into verifying the scheduler and the rest of the kernel separately, even in the presence of complex interdependencies between the two components present in mainstream kernels. This is joint work with Hongseok Yang (University of Oxford, UK). Stay for the 3rd hour, and we'll build Glass Plate Game sets for everyone who'd like one to take with them. The sets contain "idea cards" for composing the mosaic and wooden cubes and colored transparencies for tracking the thread of thought. Come for fun, friends, and stimulating conversation.

create Calagator::Event 1250461233 Tech Talk: Modular verification of preemptive OS kernels Roll back

description nil Presented by Alexey Gotsman Most major OS kernels today run on multiprocessor systems and are preemptive: it is possible for a process running in the kernel mode to get descheduled.

You don't need to register for the main SPLASH conference in order to participate in the Hackathon, but you may consider doing so for a chance to hear Ivan Sutherland (Turing Award winner), Brendan Eich (Mozilla) and much, much more! Platforms and computing time for the Hackathon kindly provided by Amazon AWS. Hackathons are participatory event. You don't show up to watch or to hang out; you show up to lead or to join a team of other developers to imagine, create, and build something cool and useful in the course of a single day. This may sound impossibly ambitious. It is not. You can get a lot done when you can ignore your inbox and simply focus on the task at hand. The ability to tap in to high-level services certainly helps, as does the fact that everyone shows up expecting to work. update Calagator::Event 1250461215 Dorkbot Workshop -- e-Textiles Roll back

description More details TBA Cost: $25 Please bring: - Scissors - A bag or garment to modify – please choose something made of a non-stretch fabric. Dreaming of bike gloves that light up to keep you visible at night, or an awesome illuminated costume? Or maybe you’d like to add a bit of extra sparkle to your living room with a glowing throw pillow… Whatever project you have in mind, if you’re curious about the process of integrating electronics into fabric, this workshop is a great place to start. Shannon Henry and Cat Poole will start by touching on some of the interesting things being developed with eTextile methods and useful resources, then we’ll spend some hands on time laying out a basic LED circuit and sewing it on to fabric using conductive thread. You’ll learn how to convert standard LEDs (and other electronic components) into sew-able ones, and how to use standard textile fastenings like zippers and snaps to switch your project on and off, plus lots of tips on how to make your project easier and make sure it lasts. No prior electronics or sewing experience required. Conductive thread and electronic components will be provided. Register for the workshop here: http://pdxetextile.eventbrite.com/ About the instructors: Shannon Henry loves to make things that blend the science & tech world with art and crafts. She has been crafting with fabric since she could handle safety scissors, and began integrating electronics into her art in 2008. Her eTextile work has been shown in San Francisco, New York, and Vancouver BC. She also develops sewn electronics kits and tutorials, which you can find at her website, Polymathdesignlab.com. Cat Poole is a one woman instigator of perception bending mayhem. Through “Discovering Empowerment Through Creativity” workshops and Upcycled Electronics, she encourages all to defy their programming and void all warranties. create Calagator::Event 1250461227 Mobile Analytics: Who? What? When? WHERE? Roll back

description nil Answering questions like, “What percentage of people who hit the home page put something in their shopping cart?” is old hat. But combine analytics with mobile and you get a new set of questions like, “What percentage of people in our store looked up product information on their phone? How can we correlate that behavior with sales?” One of the heralded eight unique abilities of mobile is that “mobile has the most accurate audience measurement”. Yet most businesses and developers have yet to consider how to track mobile usage accurately, let alone how mobile might be able to provide better information. Mobile analytics isn’t solely about the web either. Analytics for native applications can help game developers figure out what levels players are having the most trouble on and determine which promotions increase in-app purchases most. On the highly competitive playing field of mobile, any small edge can make a difference. We’re excited to have an expert panel this month to talk about Mobile Analytics. Frankly, you’re not going to find another opportunity to get such a diverse set of opinions on mobile analytics. You won’t want to miss it! <b>New this Month: In Depth Afternoon Sessions</b> We love getting great speakers, but we never seem to have enough time with them, especially when they are on a panel and is made worse when speakers travel a long way to present at our meeting. So this month we’re trying something different. In addition to the normal evening meeting, each panelist will also have a session in the late afternoon where they can talk more in-depth about their products and how they can be used. The sessions start at 3 pm and last thirty minutes each. Space is limited so sign up now to attend. http://mobileportland.com/events/mobile-analytics-depth-sessions <b>About the Panelists</b> <b>Eric Rickson, Director of Mobile Analytics, WebTrends</b> As Director of Mobile Analytics at Webtrends, Eric Rickson is responsible for driving product strategy and evangelism for Webtrends measurement solutions for mobile. Most recently, Eric was responsible for emerging markets and vertical market measurement solutions at Webtrends with an emphasis on retail, CPG, Media and Financial Services. Prior to Webtrends, Eric was a Strategic Consultant helping businesses understand and optimize the performance of their digital channels using various analytics solutions. Eric brings over 11 years of experience as a digital analytics professional working with brands such as Coca-cola, Wells Fargo, Visa, Microsoft, and Nike. <b>Michael “Luni” Libes, Founder & CTO, Ground Truth</b> Luni is a serial entrepreneur and mobile industry visionary who has participated in five start-ups, four of which he founded, during the past eighteen years. Before founding Ground Truth, Luni co-founded Medio Systems, a market leader and pioneer in delivering mobile search applications to wireless operators. There, he designed and built Medio’s initial applications and was instrumental in securing agreements with tier-1 mobile operators in North America and Europe. At the dawn of the mobile content industry, Luni led the development of state-of-the-art applications on mobile devices at Mforma, now Hands On Mobile. Earlier at Mforma, Luni played an integral role in the build-out of the company’s technical infrastructure to deliver mobile games and other data services to subscribers, as well as the infrastructure needed to support the company’s growth, including developer support, handset porting and quality assurance. <b>Isabelle Pain, Publisher Business Development Manager, Flurry</b> As Publisher Business Development Manager at Flurry, Isabelle Pain helps iOs and Android developers use mobile analytics to improve user retention and monetization. Recently, Isabelle has been focusing on evangelization of Analytics 3.0, the latest release in the Flurry analytics tool, which allows developers to create cohorts and funnels of users to identify their best audience. Prior to joining Flurry, Isabelle founded the US office of Playsoft, a mobile development and porting house. As a Global Product Manager at Gameloft, she managed the Marketing launch and user retention strategies for a series of iOs and Android games. Isabelle brings a solid understanding of the importance of mobile analytics in building and monetization of an audience on mobile. <b>Erik Onnen, Director of Delivery and Architecture, Urban Airship — Moderator</b> Erik Onnen is the Director of Architecture and Delivery for Urban Airship where he works closely with the analytics and reporting platform that he helped author. He has over a decade of experience building high throughput, data-driven systems across a variety of industries including mobile.

create Calagator::Event 1250461226 Mobile Analytics In Depth Sessions Roll back

description nil Are you have a mobile app or website? Then you need to make time on Monday afternoon for the Mobile Analytics In Depth sessions. See we love getting great speakers, but we never seem to have enough time with them. Each panelist gets at most seven minutes at the beginning to talk about what their company and product does before the panel discussion begins. And of course the panel discussion is going to be enlightening, but it is going to focus on the big picture of mobile analytics which may not be as helpful if you’re trying to figure out the nitty gritty details of how to track your mobile app or website. Frankly, when you’ve got Flurry, Ground Truth and WebTrends in the house, how can you resist the opportunity to pick their brains more? The sessions will start at 3 pm.
