Alternative to PDX Weekly Hackathon.
Come hang out and write code in a quieter, less crowded environment with your fellow nerds.
The meetings are extremely informal, and everyone is welcome!
The place is smaller, so finding the nerd herd shouldn't be too difficult. |

AgilePDX Westside (morning) - Mark Menger "The agile journey at PGE"
Roll back
| description |
Abstract:
Application Delivery at PGE currently uses both waterfall and iterative work management methodologies. PGEâs IT uses these to support six internal lines of business with their project and production support needs. PGE started the agile journey in 2009 in aid of a large scale multi-project initiative to roll-out network read meters for our customers. Over the subsequent three and half years, that experience was extended into where PGEâs IT delivery is today. Scaling to the enterprise required the synthesis of many different viewpoints, overcoming the deficiencies of agile training as applied in larger circumstances, and fabricating new processes and tools to enhance and manage the value of delivery. During this talk Mark will share highlights of what was valuable, what was a struggle, what he would do the same if starting over, and what he would do differently.
Bio:
Mark Menger is a passionate leader in the adoption of Scrum at Portland General Electric, believing strongly in the underpinning concepts of servant leadership and self-organization. He led four Scrum teams and the enterprise architecture function of PGEâs multi-million dollar Automated Metering Infrastructure initiative. As the supervisor of Application Delivery Services, he is currently scaling PGEâs adoption of Agile software delivery to 14 teams across six business client functions. This effort includes business client relationship development, and improvements in quality assurance and engineering practices. When heâs not rooting for the Timbers, the remainder of his attention is focused on Sailflow reports for the Columbia and Willamette rivers. |

Portland Area Game Development Interest Group October Meeting + Roundtable

Hi all! It’s PAGDIG time again. This time at a brand new location.
While the Lucky Lab has served us well for many a meetup, we’ve been looking for a new venue for a while where we could hold roundtable discussions at a reasonable volume without a lot of bad acoustics, especially now that outdoor seating is not an option with fall weather. Finally that month is here, as Corwin has graciously arranged to get us meeting space at the p:ear Gallery at 338 NW 6th Avenue. It will be Tuesday, 10/30 at 7pm. We were unable to book our usual Thursday this month, but we will endeavor to do that next month.
To celebrate, pizza and beverages will be provided. Feel free to bring your own stuff too, or stuff to share if you are nice like that.
The roundtable discussion subject this month:
Marketing Your Creation and Yourself in the Modern Era, for Profit and Non-Profit
As the gatekeeping for the release of games has become decentralized in recent years, so have the channels in which we get the word out about what we make. Whether it’s for the purpose of marketing a product for profit or getting the word out about smaller indie projects (as in the case for Kickstarters, etc), the landscape for promotion seems paradoxically both more accessible and more puzzling than ever.
How do you market these channels while staying authentic?
What about channels like Greenlight that mix marketing and gatekeeping?
How important are trailers and videos?
Are the old channels like ads and publishers even relevant anymore or is word of mouth king?
What about bundles and offer aggregators?
Is the “story” of who is developing their game of interest to the consumer?
Let’s put our heads together and come up with some kind of road map, or at least have fun trying. |

What is BarCamp?
BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. You never quite know what to expect at BarCamp. When you arrive on Friday, there will be an agenda framework (times / rooms), but the content for the sessions will be decided by the participants. |

Glass Plate GAme
Roll back
| description |
The Glass Plate Game, inspired by Hermann Hesse's Glass Bead Game, is essentially a conversation in the trappings of a board game. The idea is to spark creative and interesting dialog as the players explore connections between ideas against a dynamic mosaic map. There are no winners or losers. There is no order of play. Conversation continues throughout, and anyone can make a move at any time. The end result is an artifact of the conversation. The "game board" makes it easy to follow the twists and turns of the conversation.
This time the game will be played with a theme: Arts.

Zissou Society for Programming Language Exploration
Roll back
| description |
The Zissou Society for Programming Language Exploration (aka pdxlang) is a general programming language discussion/exploration group. The weird, the offbeat, the little-known, the forgotten programming languages. These are the things we discuss and explore.
We've got two talks lined up this time, and we probably will have one more added. (If you want to talk, drop a note to the list or Matt.)
Featured languages of the evening include Nickle and REBOL.
There will likely be pizza and beer, if that helps you clear your calendar. |
