The Use of Cadence in Agile and Traditional Projects: Sprint Length, Integration Frequency, and Other Matters of Rhythm

The Use of Cadence in Agile and Traditional Projects: Sprint Length, Integration Frequency, and Other Matters of Rhythm
Presented by Kathy Iberle
Dates/Times: Thursday, March 14, 2013: Networking @ 5:30-6:30 PM; Seminar 6:30-7:30 PM
Abstract:
A sprint is just one example of the use of cadence or rhythm to make a process more efficient. Once you understand the fundamentals of cadence, you can apply cadence in both agile and traditional projects to reduce overhead and coordinate activities. Learn how to determine the ideal sprint length for your project, find out when continuous integration wonât help, and discover other ways that cadence can benefit your project! This talk explores the science behind the concept of a âproject heartbeatâ using 2nd-generation Lean thinking.
Bio:
Kathy Iberle is an expert at producing high-quality software and high-tech products using practical methods. She worked in a variety of fields during her long career at Hewlett-Packard - electronic instruments, medical products, printers, and Internet applications â and she has seen development from a range of perspectives: software developer, quality engineer, test lab manager, requirements manager, agile coach, process improvement expert. Kathy has a deep knowledge of the underlying theory behind agile and Lean development, combined with a flair for pragmatic applications, which has enabled her to successfully extend software agile development methods into areas where most people think âagile just canât workâ.
Kathy reviewed technical papers for the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC) for many years, served as co-chair of PNSQCâs Program Committee in 2009, participated in the invitation-only Software Test Managers Roundtable for five years, and has published regularly since 1997. Kathy has an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Washington, and an excessive collection of degrees in Chemistry from the University of Washington and the University of Michigan. Visit her website: www.kiberle.com
A Special Treat from PNSQC
Plan on coming early! In collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC) the SPIN meeting will have pizza and pop provided by PNSQC beginning at 5:30 pm.

Impala Technical Deep Dive
Mark Grover, Hive contributer and author of "Programming Hive"
Join us for this technical deep dive about Cloudera Impala, the project that makes scalable parallel databse technology available to the Hadoop community for the first time. Impala is an open-sourced code base that allows users to issue low-latency queries to data stored in HDFS and Apache HBase using familiar SQL operators. We will begin with an overview of Impala from the user's perspective, followed by an overview of Impala's architecture and implementation, and will conclude with a comparison of Impala with Apache Hive, commercial MapReduce alternatives and traditional data warehouse infrastructure. |

Part hackathon, part geek social, these biweekly meetings are a time for you to come join others for insight, inspiration or just insanity. Bring your toys for others to see, or come see what others have been painstakingly chipping away at in their spare time. Whether it's code or chips, hacking of all sorts is encouraged. But we also like to hear your crazy ideas, so please come join us and bring your willingness to share your brilliance. We'll be the kids with all the coolest stuff on the table. Hope to see you there. |

Mobile Weekly Workgroup
Roll back
| description |
Welcome to the PDX Mobile Workgroup.
Beginners are encouraged to join.
We welcome Software and Hardware Engineers working on Android, iOS, and all other mobile platforms.
Working on projects by yourself can be difficult because don't get the feedback or interaction you get in an office environment. Online sites such as stackoverflow.com are great resources for answering well defined questions, but don't have the benefits of personal interactions. When you are part of a community you get to know others with similar interests, get an immediate response to hard to describe problems, bounce ideas off of others, and learn by example.
The in person Weekly Workgroup is the main reason the group exists. It is designed to fill the void for engineers who would otherwise work on their projects in relative isolation from other engineers. This site is mostly used for discussion about meetings.
The group is informal. Attendees stop by at various times after work and stay as long as they like.
For more information visit our website.

Come hang out and write code in a quieter, less crowded environment with your fellow nerds.
The meetings are extremely informal, and everyone is welcome!
The place is smaller, so finding the nerd herd shouldn't be too difficult. |

Mobile Portland: Make the Mobile Web Fast
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Please RSVP [http://mobileportland.com/events/make-mobile-web-fast]
Making your website fast leads to happy users, reduced operating costs, and even improved search ranking. Speed is especially important on the mobile web, where users want information quickly and network connections can be frustratingly slow.
At the next Mobile Portland meeting Joshua Marantz, Matthew Steele, and Ilya Grigorik will show us:
*the latest mobile web optimization techniques and best practices;
*how Google's PageSpeed Insights can help you identify performance problems;
*how the SPDY protocol and PageSpeed tools such as mod_pagespeed and ngx_pagespeed can be used to make things faster;
*Google's upcoming PageSpeed Service;
We hope to see you all Monday evening.
About the Speakers
Joshua Marantz, Software Engineer, Google [http://www.google.com/]
Joshua Marantz is a software engineer at Google, where he is tech-lead of mod_pagespeed, a project to build an open-source Apache module for automatically improving website latency and reducing bandwidth consumption by rewriting HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Images. At Google he has also worked on latency improvements in web caching infrastructure and scalable social networking. Prior to Google, Josh spent 20 years in the Electronic Design Automation industry, much of it working on accelerated functional simulation. He holds BS and MS degrees from MIT, in Computer Science and Engineering, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
Matthew Steele, Software Engineer, Google [http://www.google.com/]
Matthew Steele is a software engineer at Google, working on making the web faster. Matthew is the lead designer and developer of mod_spdy, which adds SPDY protocol support to Apache Httpd. Matthew has also contributed to mod_pagespeed, an Apache module that automatically rewrites web pages to make the faster, and is one of the developers of the PageSpeed Insights analysis tool.
Ilya Grigorik, Developer Advocate, Google [http://www.google.com/]
Ilya Grigorik is a web performance engineer and developer advocate on the Make The Web Fast team at Google, where he spends his days and nights on making the web fast and driving adoption of performance best practices.
Prior to focusing on web performance Ilya was the founder and CTO of PostRank, a social analytics company which was acquired by Google and became the core of social analytics reporting within Google Analytics. Whenever not thinking web performance, or analytics, Ilya can be found contributing to open-source projects, reading, or building fun projects like VimGolf, GitHub Archive and others.

Glass Plate Game
Roll back
| description |
Inspired by Hermann Hesse's novel "The Glass Bead Game", the Glass Plate Game, is essentially a conversation in the trappings of a board game. The idea is to spark creative and interesting dialog as the players explore connections between ideas against a dynamic mosaic map. There are no winners or losers. There is no order of play. Conversation flows throughout, and the end result is an artifact of the conversation, which can, itself, become a subject of further discussion.
The topic of the game begins as Math and Science in Sci-Fi
(the meta-game). We will begin with an introduction to the Game then launch right into playing. If you can't make it on time or stay the whole time, come anyway! It's better to see you briefly than not at all. The Game can last as long as we want it to, and go in any direction. After playing, there will be time for interested parties to talk further. |

Sound Like an Expert from the Stage

How good is your English? Is your grammar good enough to take you to the highest levels of public speaking?
Based on years of speaking experience and talking with NSA's most seasoned speakers, David Rabiner, CSP, has designed this program to help you sound better on stage and avoid deadly grammatical mistakes. This is your chance to learn how to sound like a pro.
Join us to learn how to:
Establish your authority with large and/or educated audiences.
Skip the high school grammar and punctuationâlearn valuable tips that you can use immediately in your next speech
Avoid major mistakes and your audience thinking, âDid she really say that??â
Have credibility with people who are smarter than you
This will be a fun and fast-paced program that focuses on the most common speaking mistakes that smart, educated people make. You'll probably hear mistakes that you made earlier that same day, and you'll learn techniques so that these rules stick with you forever.
(You'll even learn the real difference between "who" and "whom"!)
*One of the most experienced professional speakers in the country, David Rabiner has averaged more than 100 presentations each year since 1993.
In total, he has made over 1800 presentations, wowing audiences in 12 countries and 45 states with his rare combination of expertise, humor, energy, and story-telling.
In 2003, David earned the coveted Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation, the international benchmark for speaking excellence currently held by fewer than 600 people worldwide.* |

QA Forum: 2013 the Year of Responsive Web Design
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
As mobile web usage has exploded over the past few years, Responsive Web Design (RWD) has become one of the go-to solutions to provide content across a universe of different browsers and devices. Apps and websites have merged into one. In simple terms, a responsive web design uses "media queries" to figure out what resolution of device it's being served on. Flexible images and fluid grids then size correctly to fit the screen. From a QA view, how can we effectively test RWD. The Technology Association of Oregon (TAO) is excited to provide an opportunity to gather and discuss lessons learned and real life strategies to test these applications.
On Thursday, February 28th, the Quality Assurance Forum of the TAO is presenting a panel discussion on Responsive Web Design â Testing. Come join us for an engaging evening with your SQA peers centered on how to test Responsive Web.
Panelists:
Lyza Danger Gardner, co-founder, Cloud Four
Since co-founding Portland, Ore.-based mobile web start-up Cloud Four (http://www.cloudfour.com) in 2007, Lyza has tortured and thrilled herself with the intricate ins and outs of the bazillion devices and browsers now accessing the web globally. Lyza and co-founder Jason Grigsby are the authors of Head First Mobile Web.
Trent Peterson, co-founder, AppThwack -
Trent Peterson spent seven years at Intel designing system-automation solutions trusted to test products used by millions of customers with an emphasis on simplicity and user experience. He left in early 2012 to co-found AppThwack,a mobile app testing service that helps developers quickly and automatically test their apps on real devices.
Pawel Wojnarowicz, co-founder, AppThwack -
Pawel Wojnarowicz built an automation platform in his spare time that became the official solution for testing all wireless products at Intel. Pawel left after nine years to co-found AppThwack, a mobile app testing service that helps developers quickly and automatically test their apps on real devices.

TechFestNW (formerly known as PDXconf) is designed to celebrate interesting people who are passionate about technology. Who are building a better world. And who value craft over commodity.
The event takes place in conjunction with MusicFestNW, one of the largest independent music festivals in the US. Last year, MFNW attracted acts from up-and-coming artists to bands like Passion Pit, Dinosaur Jr, Silversun Pickups, and Girl Talk. While the inaugural tech event featured speakers from Flipboard, Betaworks, Walmart Labs, GigaOM, Shazam, and Spotify---as well as local favorites like Draplin Design Co, LAIKA, Chirpify, Simple, and Nike.
TFNW will take place September 6-8, 2013, with speakers the 6th and 7th and a hackathon on the 8th. Tech takes place during the day. And music takes place during the night. Creating a true festival atmosphere.

AgilePDX Downtown Pub Lunch: Cambia's Agile Transformation
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Over the last decade, agile practices continued to gain a foothold in many companies. Many of the practices were first tried on a smaller scale, and tailored to green-field projects. But, as agile practices are adopted at multi-site, larger companies, with complex back office projects, they bring with them additional and unique challenges. Take for example, Cambia Health Solutions, a not-for-profit, health Solutions Company. Cambia has a relatively large IT group, which develops its own software solutions and integrates software from other vendors. It has a distributed workforce that spans four states with many work-at-home employees. Cambia’s mainline business is regulated by various state entities and national agencies. Many of Cambia’s projects are large, mandated compliance projects that have a fixed time box and a set scope. Missing either the deadline or scope could potentially mean losing a significant portion of its business or facing monetary penalties. Can agile practices work and scale to solve business problems facing the company? What if you also operate within an IT organization that is structured with functional silos? And what if you have reluctant business partners who define software requirements and perform final verification of software solutions? To tackle these challenges, Cambia organized an Enterprise Transition Community to lead the transition from a patchwork of agile practices to a large-scale agile implementation. Find out how we carried out this transition, what we have learned along the way, and how that might help organizations of all sizes take on a similar challenge.
Aashish co-presented a related paper with other Cambia staff at last year's PNSQC. You can find the paper here by searching on Aashish's name on the page: http://www.pnsqc.org/past-conferences/2012-conference/paper-and-presentations/#papers
Aashish Vaidya is a Technology Manager leading Specialized Teams at Cambia Health Solutions. He is a founding member of Cambia’s Enterprise Transition Community, and other Best Practices Exchanges. He also serves as an internal coach on Agile and QA practices. Aashish has over 20+ years working in technology development and leadership positions for companies such as Compaq, Intel, and Kronos Incorporation. In 2012, Aashish was a Co-Author and presenter at PNSQC. In 2011, Aashish was a panelist on Technology Association of Oregon’s panel discussion: QA’s Role in Agile. He is a graduate of Texas A&M University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering. |

UnityPDX: Portland's Unity3D user group
Roll back
| description |
The monthly meeting for Unity3D developers, enthusiasts and those curious about the framework. Come learn a bit about Unity3D, share what you're working on, see what others are working on, or jump into a few simple tutorials and start building something fun with us.
UnityPDX meets every third Thursday. It's easy to remember because "third" sounds a bit like "Thursday."
Unity is a game engine used primarily to build 3D mobile games, but it's useful for 2D games as well. The engine exports to all sorts of platforms, including iOS, Android and Flash for desktops. |
