Roll back

It’s an undeniable trend: every day, more and more people are reading books and comics on their phones, e-readers and tablets. Rather than disappearing, though, physical books and comics are evolving into more highly-designed art objects. Hosted by the Independent Publishing Resource Center, this conversation will involve a vibrant group of Portland-based writers, zinesters, small press publishers and comics artists, all of whom are thriving within the intersections of traditional printing and digital publishing.
This event is part of Wild: Portland, an exploration of the frontier of art, technology and culture. |

Cleanweb Hackathon - Making Placeless a Place for All
Roll back
| description |
How can a person make a placeless a place for all? Perhaps, climate change isn't your personal concern but you would care about if your roof is leaking, your energy bill is too high, your tab water is dirty or the nearest grocery store is 20 miles away. If you have to move constantly because of these issues, you will never be able to find a home to make it your own.
This hackathon is different than others because you work on the issues that you care about (such as the above)...the issues will make Portland a place for you to call home.
Here is the scoop about the hackathon.
Prizes
First place: $1500 and 50% discount to the NEXT Startup Weekend
Second place: $500 and two 50% discount to Tech for Change
Friday, 5/17 (optional but recommended)
Kick-Off Party: Good food and beer will be there for you plus some good companies. An opportunity to scout teammates and networking & social
Saturday, 5/18
Commissioner Fish will speak. Bill Weihl, Sustainability Guru at Facebook will make cameo appearance via video conferencing.
API, datasets and project ideas will be presented.
Sunday, 5/19
It is your time to shine. The final presentation will start at 3:30 and the prizes will be given out to the top two teams.
Breakfast and lunch are on us. Thanks to Chipotle!
See you all there! |

Cleanweb Hackathon: A call for software developers, designers or innovators
Roll back
| description |
If the idea of potentially winning a cash prize and a client contract while solving environmental issues sounds great to you, come to join the first Cleanweb Hackathon in Portland.
The Cleanweb Hackathon in Portland, Oregon kicking off Friday 5/17 at Earth Advantage will bring together software developers, designers and entrepreneurs for a weekend to brainstorm solutions that address global resource constraints.
You can bring your own ideas to the table and collaborate with other participants, or check out our project ideas: http://portland.cleanweb.co/project-ideas/ from local businesses and the City of Portland.
In less than 30 hours, teams will create apps that tackle energy, waste, water, transportation and other sustainability issues by leveraging web, mobile and social media technologies. Teams will be equipped with datasets, APIs, food and coffee; presenting their prototypes to a select panel of judges on Sunday afternoon.
At the Friday night kick-off social, the local organizing team will discuss the project ideas to focus developers on solving key issues given by the city and other public and private sector partners. On Saturday morning, participantsâ teams will assemble at Earth Advantage for a briefing on API and datasets before beginning development of their applications. The hackathon will conclude Sunday with teams presenting their apps to investors and infotech industry leaders in the hope of winning the cash prize. Participants will also get a chance to mingle with the sponsors, judges and press. Presentations and awards session will begin at 3:00 PM PST.
The Cleanweb Hackathon Series began in San Francisco in September 2011, which was a sold-out event with over a hundred participants that resulted in fourteen software and mobile applications. Cleanweb later mushroomed into a global movement with community spawning movement in over a dozen cities around North America and Europe and most recently the formation of The Cleanweb Initiative, a new non-profit industry association. |

Keep Portland Wired! A Tour of Portlandâs Tech Community
Roll back
| description |

→ |
A tour by [Know Your City](http://knowyourcity.org) in conjunction with [The Wild](http://www.thewildevent.org/portland/)
*Cost: $25 general/ $20 members*
Board the bus for a ride through Portlandâs technology industry, including some of the major institutions our city is known for, as well as some of our emerging start ups. Get a behind-the-scenes view of leading tech innovators, and meet some of the leaders who are shaping Portlandâs tech futureâ¦youâd be crazy to miss it!
Weâll start out at Portland Incubator Experiment, a start-up incubator for new, emerging tech businesses. Associated with and housed in the Widen+Kennedy building, the space canopies 8-10 start-ups at a time, helping with the early stages of creating business. Weâll hear about how theyâve created more than $1 million in venture capital and more than 400 jobs, and meet with several of the business owners.
At Second Story weâll get a look at their innovation center for new interactive experiences. Staff will share their work in pushing the boundaries of storytelling across digital channels â including web, mobile and installations. Weâll hear a bit about their history and some of the new groundbreaking projects currently in development.
Nike+ Accelerator will provide us with a similar but different view into the world of emerging start-ups. Started just months ago, 10 teams are working with mentors to develop a variety of businesses, many around health, wellness and technology. The program is run by TechStars, a Colorado-based company that has generated more than $275 million in venture capital for clients over the last six years.
The tour ends at Free Geek, a nonprofit whose mission is to recycle technology and provide access to computers, the Internet, education, and job skills in exchange for community service. Founded in 2000, the center refurbishes more than 44,000 computers, printers and monitors a year, while recycling 601 tons of materials. Weâll take a quick tour of their thrift store, as well as learn about their hardware grants program, classes and volunteer opportunities. |
