You also will learn to accelerate and enhance your adoption and practice of agile development within your organization. Training Objectives: What You Will Learn * Build and ship weekly increments of software using iterations/Sprints * Create nearly bug-free code using test-driven development, refactoring, and exploratory testing * Understand and accommodate stakeholders and their diverse opinions * Work in a cross-functional team with on-site customers, testers, and programmers * Prevent build failures with continuous integration * Incrementally build technical infrastructure alongside features Agenda: In a class that emphasizes doing; you will form cross-functional teams and deliver actual software in four 90-minute iterations, in a real-world environment that includes version control, automated builds, and continuous integration. update Calagator::Event 1250458931 Westside Programmers Roll back

description A polyglot programming group meeting in the heart of The Beave. We seem to talk a lot about oddball programming languages and their features. And the usual geekery you'd expect from a programmer's group. <strong>This month</strong> we'll be running <a href="http://rakudo.org/">Rakudo *</a> to get some exposure to the new Perl 6 language features and check out the Rakudo * ("star") release (a Perl 6 implementation on <a href="http://parrot.org">Parrot</a>.) The <em>*</em> series is a more featured, predictable, and stable user-focussed release than the git master or monthly development releases of the Rakudo Perl 6 compiler. This is less cutting-edge than the current development version, and is intended to give early users a relatively slow-moving target to experiment with language features and use cases. Speaking of slow-moving, Rakudo is really, really slow. This is not the production-grade performance you know from Perl 5, this is the westside's MO of oddball programming language geekery and bloody stumps. We're so cutting edge, we might even start the meeting before the release tarball drops. Just in case, here's the instructions for building git master rakudo: <pre> git clone cd rakudo perl Configure.pl --gen-parrot make make install PATH=$PWD/parrot_install/bin:$PATH perl6 -e 'say "hello"' </pre> Perl 6 is a substantially different language from Perl 5. If you haven't kept up with the developments in the last few years, now is a good time to take it for a spin. A polyglot programming group meeting in the heart of The Beave. create Calagator::Event 1250458930 Galois Tech Talk Roll back

description nil Galois is pleased to host the following tech talk. These talks are open to the interested public. Please join us! title: Industrial Strength Distributed Explicit Model Checking presenter: John Erickson time: 10:30am, August 3rd, 2010 location: Galois Inc. 421 SW 6th Ave. Suite 300, Portland, OR, USA (3rd floor of the Commonwealth building) Abstract: We present PReach, an industrial strength distributed explicit state model checker based on Murphi. The goal of this project was to develop a reliable, easy to maintain, scalable model checker that was compatible with the Murphi specification language. PReach is implemented in the concurrent functional language Erlang, chosen for its parallel programming elegance. We use the original Murphi front-end to parse the model description, a layer written in Erlang to handle the communication aspects of the algorithm, and also use Murphi as a back-end for state expansion and to store the hash table. This allowed a clean and simple implementation, with the core parallel algorithms written in under 1000 lines of code. This talk describes the PReach implementation including the various features that are necessary for the large models we target. We have used PReach to model check an industrial cache coherence protocol with approximately 30 billion states. To our knowledge, this is the largest number published for a distributed explicit state model checker. PReach has been released to the public under an open source BSD license. bio: John Erickson is a Design Engineer at Intel Hillsboro. He graduated with his PhD in Computer Science from The University of Texas at Austin in 2008. Currently he is working on the validation of uncore components in a 50+ core processor using a variety of formal and dynamic techniques. Past research interests include theorem proving with a focus on lemma generation and generalization in the context of induction.

create Calagator::Event 1250458925 Mobile Phones and Devices in Schools | Mobile Portland Roll back

description nil Mobile phones in our schools are already controversial. Many fear distracted teenagers texting their friends instead of paying attention to their teachers. Others educators are looking at mobile devices differently. George Fox University has offered incoming students the option of a traditional laptop or an iPad. Pilot schools have tested using iPod Touches and other devices in class to augment the learning experience. At Mobile Portland this month we have a panel of educators who will discuss how mobile devices impact education: * What role do mobile devices have in the class room? * When are they useful and when are they distracting? * Do they need to be issued by the school or are there ways to take advantage of devices that students own? * What are the challenges to effectively using mobile devices in education? Join us for a spirited and engaging conversation in the final days before school starts again.

description nil Season 3, episode 3 Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks! TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference. So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

update Calagator::Event 1250458785 WhereCampPDX 2010 Roll back

description WhereCampPDX is a free unconference focusing on all things geographical. This informal meeting of minds welcomes all geo-locative enthusiasts, anyone who asks “where am I” or feels the need to “know their place”. An unconference is a conference planned by the participants, we all convene together, plan sessions, and have break-outs into sessions. This gives everybody an opportunity to bring to the table the things that interest them the most and lets us talk about new topics that are still new and exploratory. Part of what is important to hearing new voices and getting new ideas is lowering barriers to participation – this event is free and it is driven by the participants. create Calagator::Event 1250458918 Second PDC Software Cluster Gathering Roll back

description nil This is our second community gathering in the process of identifying the elements the City needs to develop in order to have a thriving software cluster in the Portland region. Our first survey in April helped identify the critical areas the city needed to focus on in order to build the cluster. Our second survey in July drilled down into some specific ways to address these areas. At this meeting we will share the results of the July survey: • User group support • Creating a directory of local software companies and coders • Mentoring matching • Software company financing Software is one of only four clusters that the Portland Development Commission is focusing on, so your input on this topic will have a large impact on what ultimately becomes our region's future for software success.
