update Calagator::Event 1250459307 Agile PDX (formerly XPDX) features: Nancy Van Schooenderwoert, "Transient State: From Funding to First Iteration for Embedded Systems" Roll back

description Does everyone at your company respond to change as fast as your agile team? Or do you have critical partners who simply can't move as fast as your team? Are you required to provide detailed estimates in order to get enough resources to start uncertain and complex projects? How do you even build enough buy-in to avoid death by a thousand cuts? In this presentation, Nancy Van Schooenderwoert will explore practical, proven ways to address these questions. Who should attend: Anyone trying to build enough buy-in for their company to give Agile methods a genuine try. Embedded systems developers and project leaders who need to envision the concrete workings of Agile practices in their domain, as a first step to making it happen. Speaker: Nancy Van Schooenderwoert is an Agile Enterprise coach with over a decade of experience applying Agile practices as an engineer, manager, and consultant. She has led Agile change initiatives in safety-critical, highly regulated industries, and coached clients in the art of Agile technical and management leadership. Nancy's experience spans embedded software development and applications in aerospace, factory automation, medical devices, defense systems, as well as in financial services. In 1998 Nancy introduced agile techniques to embedded software, including safety- critical applications. She was among the first to publish advice on the techniques that work in real world embedded projects. She has introduced agile ideas and practices to another field where it was thought to be impossible – data warehousing and large data migrations. Coaches she mentored are now the leaders in this new field applying lean-agile principles to applications where data quality is central. Nancy Van Schooenderwoert is Principal Coach at Lean-Agile Partners Inc. www.LeanAgilePartners.com Pizza sponsored by PNSQC. The Hawthorne Farm MAX station stops right next to Intel. update Calagator::Event 1250459269 IxDA Portland: Customer Journey Roll back

description Join us for our IxDA Portland monthly meetup. Co-Leader Barbara Holmes will lead an exercise called the Customer Journey, a technique for doing user research. Anyone and everyone is welcome, designers and non-designers alike. IxDA Portland is the local chapter of the Interaction Design Association (http://www.ixda.org/local/ixda-portland) Join us for our monthly IxDA Portland meetup. Co-Leader Barbara Holmes will lead an exercise called the Customer Journey, a technique for doing user research. As IxD practitioners we’re pretty familiar with user research techniques like personas and scenarios. How do you take this research and bring it to life for stakeholders at the business unit level or higher? One technique is the customer journey. This month, we’ll explore customer journeys as a way to illustrate user research and align it with client’s business and marketing goals. We’ll practice creating one by taking a look at a journey we’ve all made; deciding to be involved in the IxD profession. Barbara Holmes, User Experience Architect at ISITE Design and co-leader of the Portland IxDA chapter, will lead the discussion about customer journeys. She and Jeanne will then facilitate the activity, and follow-up discussion. In the activity, we’ll work individually to draw our own journey to the IxD profession. Where did you start? What drew you to the practice? What learning/training did you engage with? What are you doing now? After individual work, we’ll break into small groups where you’ll share your journeys with each other. The goal is to find common threads or patterns. Finally, you’ll present those commonalities and patterns to the group in a small group presentation. Anyone and everyone is welcome, designers and non-designers alike. create Calagator::Event 1250459356 Eugene Web Developers Roll back

description nil The Eugene [Modern] Web Developers group meets monthly, on the second Tuesday of the month, to discuss all things web development, but we welcome non-web development as well, and have discussed mobile, desktop, and really any software development. The community here in Eugene is small enough, that we'd rather have simply all software developers who are interested in hanging out and talking shop, etc. We try to have at least one presentation (whether 5 minutes or 1 hour) at each meetup, and if you have a topic you'd like to present, please post to the mailing list/Google Group.

create Calagator::Event 1250459355 Planning a social media strategy Roll back

description nil Free Business Training, Portland “Transforming Customers into Raving Fans Through Social Media” Many successful companies are using social media to attract and convert leads, grow revenue, reduce marketing costs and even develop new products. Is YOUR business being left behind? Why Do Some Businesses Have Trouble With Social? 85% of companies have used Social Media and failed to see business results, while 10% use it and see their revenue soar. There are 3 primary reasons why businesses fail with their Social Media efforts: 1. The business has a siloed organizational structure. Social media can often blur the lines between customer service, sales, marketing and even R&D. Be open to change. 2. The business leaders think social media is nothing more than another marketing tactic. But this approach leads to pushy selling and inconsistent messaging and can turn off more business in the long-term. These new tools require a different mindset than traditional marketing. 3. The business leader mistakenly assumes that because many of the social channels are free that they are easy to use and so jump in without a strategy. After this doesn’t work, they conclude that social simply doesn’t work. The problem, however, was with the message, not the medium. Put YOUR Business in the Winning 10% Join Cinta Media Group for a free training to help your business thrive in the modern marketplace. You will walk away with clear actionable steps you can take. There will be time for Q&A at the end. Where & When Key Bank 1222 SW 6th Avenue Portland, OR 97204 Date: Thursday, October 21 at 12:30 PM

create Calagator::Event 1250459351 PDX.pm - Practical Lists / Utilities pulled from Fennec Roll back

description nil The monthly meeting of the Portland Perl Mongers peaker: Chad Granum Chad will give 2 shorter talks in a row. The first talk will deal with lists, what they are, how to use them. The second talk is a short presentation on several useful tools/utilities that started as part of the Fennec project but have been pulled out for general use. Practical Lists Chad will define what a list is and how it differs from an array. He will cover tools such as grep and map, as well as some List::Util functions. He will explain how you may start using lists in more places when you understand how they work. Utilities pulled from Fennec Fennec was a large undertaking, it also required implementing a few new ideas. Many of the new ideas are useful outside of the Fennec project. Chad will cover the following until he runs out of time: Exporter::Declare Method::Workflow Child Exodist::Util Devel::CallerStack

description nil Galois is pleased to host the following tech talk. These talks are open to the interested public. Please join us! title: Fides: Remote Anomaly-Based Cheat Detection Using Client Emulation speaker: Prof. Wu-chang Feng time: 10:30am, Tuesday 19 October 2010 location: Galois Inc. 421 SW 6th Ave. Suite 300, Portland, OR,USA (3rd floor of the Commonwealth building) abstract: As a result of physically owning the client machine, cheaters in online games currently have the upper-hand when it comes to avoiding detection. To address this problem and turn the table on cheaters, this paper presents Fides, an anomaly-based cheat detection approach that remotely validates game execution. With Fides, a server-side Controller specifies how and when a client-side Auditor measures the game. To accurately validate measurements, the Controller partially emulates the client and collaborates with the server. This paper examines a range of cheat methods and initial measurements that counter them, showing that a Fides prototype is able to efficiently detect several existing cheats, including one state-of-the-art cheat that is advertised as undetectable. bio: Wu-chang Feng is currently an Associate Professor in the Intel Systems and Networking Laboratory at Portland State University where he leads a research group in networking and security. Wu-chang received his B.S. in 1992 from Penn State University and his M.S.E. and Ph.D. degrees in 1994 and 1999 from the University of Michigan. He was awarded the IEEE Communications Society 2003 William R. Bennett prize as well as one of four prizes recognizing the Best IBM Research Papers in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Math published in 2002.
