PDX Women In Tech (PDXWIT) presents - "Most Likely to Succeed" Viewing
Roll back
| description |
RSVP here - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-presents-most-likely-to-succeed-viewing-tickets-28317818357
"Most Likely to Succeed" is a documentary about the school systems that are preparing our kids with skills relevant to the modern work place. This documentary has an emphasis on STEM education, hands-on experience, a "makers" mentality to solving problems and using creativity in all aspects of life.
Director Greg Whiteley (Mitt, 2014 Sundance Film Festival) locates the source of the problem not in the economy but in our educational system, which was developed at the dawn of the Industrial Age to train obedient workers. With a world of information available a click away, and the modern workplace valuing skills like collaboration and critical thinking, our rote-based system of learning has become outdated and ineffective. Watch as the documentary unfolds and shows viable solutions.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. |

PDX Women In Tech (PDXWIT) presents Demystifying Telecom:How the voice you hear got there
Roll back
| description |
RSVP here - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-presents-demystifying-telecomhow-the-voice-you-hear-got-there-tickets-28243621432
Have you ever wondered how phone calls work on a lower level? James Aimonetti has created a workshop to show PDXWIT members the tech behind telecom.
Agenda for the workshop:
- A brief history of telecom
- Describe VoIP at high level
- Show some SIP packets for basic call scenarios
- Introduce basic jargon and acronym
- Compare SIP to HTTP
- Describe high level distributed architecture of Kazoo
- Identify and eliminate single points of failure
- Coordinate call processing among servers
- Highlight challenges in distributing everything
- Brief pitch for developing against Kazoo
- REST APIs
- Pivot - real-time, dynamic call routing
This workshop encourages more women to consider telecom as an exciting place where innovation is possible and learn to marry telecom infrastructure to the Internet-driven life in new and novel ways. Come learn a little about telecom, distributed systems as applied to telecom infrastructure, Erlang, and maybe get inspired to build new systems that leverage the APIs exposed in Kazoo.
We are a community-based non-profit organization. |

The New Tropicana Las Vegas – a DoubleTree by Hilton redefines the expectations of today’s global travelers with a recently completed $200 million transformation which provides a casually elegant resort experience. In addition to a South Beach rhythm and vibe, the transformation of the resort includes a fresh redesign of every best-in-class room and suite, the 50,000-square-foot casino, more than 100,000 square feet of meeting and exhibition space, several new restaurants and bars, a new race and sports book, Glow®, a Mandara Spa and fitness center, and the Laugh Factory.
Each best-in-class room is styled in a sunset palette of warm shades and appointed custom-designed furnishings, plantation shutters, a sleek chaise or workspace desk, a king or two queen-size ultra-plush Euro Top Serta Perfect Sleeper mattresses and 300-thread-count linens. In-room entertainment is also transformed with a 42” flat-panel LCD TV, an iHome clock radio with a universal docking station and wireless Internet.
While the Paradise Tower is located near the casino floor and designed for the leisure traveler who wants to be in the heart of Tropicana’s hot new vibe, the Club Tower’s accommodations are a perfect option for business travelers with its oversized workspaces, and location adjacent to the Conference Center.
The recently unveiled Bungalow Deluxe rooms, similar in contemporary décor to the Paradise Tower, are ideal for the guest who wants to relax and socialize, with spacious decks overlooking the lush landscaping and pool, easy access to the resort’s amenities and convenient parking.
First-class entertainment includes headliners in the Tropicana Theater, Laugh Factory comedy club and live music in the Tropicana Lounge.

DevelopmentNow Little Hackathon of Horrors
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
At DevelopmentNow, we like learning how to use and program new technology, and the ability to write skills for Amazon's Alexa assistant is pretty exciting. We're hosting a free workshop and hackathon at our offices, during which we'll learn together to write a new Alexa skill, and demonstrate it, in an hour!
Because this will be late October, and because we also like the spooky atmosphere of that time of year, we're going to focus on thinking of skills with a Halloween bent. Given time and interest, we may even be able to put together a decision-tree narration of a haunted house. We're also eager to hear your own ideas and see what all the participants come up with together.
**What's the planned schedule?**
Our office doors will open at 10 am, and we'll officially kick off the session at 11. We'll share quickstart documents to everyone in attendance, and have a couple of our in-house developers with Alexa experience roaming the place to help figure things out. At 4 pm, we'll wrap up and take turns showing off what we've built.
**What are my transport/parking options?**
Parking around the east side of the Burnside Bridge is limited, but generally viable on weekends. We're also very close to the MLK and Burnside stop for the A Loop of the Portland Streetcar, or a block from the nearest bus stop on the 19 or 20. We have indoor bike parking as well.
**What should I bring to the event?**
Please bring a laptop and a willingness to learn! You don't need previous experience. We'll provide power, wifi, workspace, food, cooperative instruction, and our Echo for testing.
**Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?**
[email protected]
**You said there will be food?**
Yes! We'll provide coffee and pastries when the office doors open at 10, and order Sizzle Pie around 2 pm for our hard-working participants. |

PDX Women In Tech (PDXWIT) presents Demystifying Telecom:How the voice you hear got there
Roll back
| description |
