Empower Autonomous Teams - Change and Innovation Practises from Management 3.0
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The two day Management 3.0 Course is a highly engaging learning workshop with the sole focus to inspire and give tools for team members and managers to transform their workplaces. The time is ripe for a new view on the role of teams and how to empower teams to be more autonomous. Management 3.0 is redefining the definition of leadership with management as a group responsibility, and in this workshop you will get inspiring input from two facilitators Ron Quartel and Line Mørkbak who each bring a unique set of skills and point of views on how to rewamp management.
It’s all about collaborating to find the most efficient and engaging way for an organization and/or a team to achieve its goals while constantly prioritizing a flourishing, happy, innovative work environment. Get inspired to experiment with new tools and practices to support your work!
During the two days, participants will experience theory and practice in small chunks, reflect on inspiring stories, work through fun games and exercises; and have time for focused group discussions on how to apply the new knowledge back at work.
In the workshop we will explore these important questions:
* How can we motivate our team and colleagues?
* How can we be agile when the organization is not?
* How can we change the organization’s culture?
* How can we change the mindset of managers?
* How can we get teams to take responsibility?
* How can we improve teamwork and team collaboration?
Who should join?
In our complex world, management is too important to leave it only to the managers. Join this course if you are a team leader, scrum master, change agent, a passionate influencer, coach, agile developer, manager or HR leader in your organization. If you want to be a great people leader regardless of title, this workshop is for you!
Early Bird prices has been extended to Sep 12, 2016

Science Hack Day Meet & Greet: PDX Maker Week Edition
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The organizers of the upcoming Portland Science Hack Day (October 7th-9th), including the OHSU Library, are hosting a happy hour meet & greet. If you're planning to participate in PDX Maker Week you'll be a short walk away from the Crowd Supply Open House (going on from 5:30-8:30). See [PDX Maker Week](http://pdxmakerweek.com/) for more information on their events.
Science Hack Day is an event where anyone excited about making things with science comes together to see what they can prototype in 24 hours. As described in [this recent Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences article](http://www.pnas.org/content/113/29/7928), these events are valuable and often transformative for scientists. Learning the guts of our equipment, hardware, and software helps researchers to improve transparency and reproducibility. It helps us learn new skills and forge collaborations to build the tools and software we need, rather than relying on proprietary resources.
Never hacked before? This meet & greet is for you! Hack Day enthusiasts will be there to share their experiences and ideas to get you inspired for Portland Science Hack Day in October. Anyone who is excited about making things with science and technology is encouraged to attend.
Learn more, get inspired, form a team! |

Donut Summit: Hack Oregon Project Season Kick Off
Roll back

# Donut Summit: Hack Oregon Project Season Kick-Off
....Pretty much your standard Sunday donuts and coffee with artists, developers, data scientists, government, and business owners casually design thinking a better Oregon.
Oh yeah, plus all the data. NBD
Hack Oregon opens its doors twice a year to assemble interdisciplinary focus teams of volunteers to build open-data resources on important themes in Oregon. At the Summit we'll introduce new themes for projects and assemble teams. We won't be coding this afternoon, but it's a exciting space for cross-pollination between disciplines while we take the afternoon to collaborate, plan, and constructively brainstorm. Some of you will get started hacking soon, and others we'll see later as the project cycle progresses. Everyone is welcome, and we can't wait to meet you!
## Themes

Housing

Budget

Transportation

Homelessness

Emergency Response

PS: Showing up to the Summit is not a commitment to volunteer, but fair warning, after you experience this you might just step through the looking glass and disappear into the data rabbit hole :) |

Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |
We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations.
##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm
This month we're doing something a little different!
We're going to have a panel of senior ruby developers who will answer any questions relating to ruby, getting into tech, things to focus on to amp up your ruby career or whatever else (that's relevant...) that may come to your mind. As such, we definitely recommend coming Tuesday if you're new to the tech community. Even if you're not new, there's still always new things to learn and ask.
The Senior Panel includes:
* Brent Miller - 11 years as a Ruby developer, Principal Architect & Engineer @ New Relic
* Sam Livingston-Gray - 10 years as a Ruby developer, Senior Engineer @ RealGeeks.com, Part of the Ruby Rogues podcast
* Jesse Cooke - 9 years, Team Lead at InQuicker/Stericycle, contributor to Rubinius, Maglev and JRuby
We have a new regular emcee, Lauren Voswinkel. Lauren adds, "I have a bit of an announcement and a primer about an ongoing activity that I'd like to start running regularly at meetings."
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.
#Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!
ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
_ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!_

We support multiple development teams, all using different sets of tools.

**********

Tana's bio:

Tana Franko works with an international team of technical writers directly supporting Cisco Spark, a recent Cisco Systems innovation to facilitate collaboration.
