Open Science Data Jamboree and Hackathon
Roll back
| description |

Join us for a special OHSU Open Science Data Jamboree & Hackathon - Everyone is Welcome!
The December Data Jamboree will focus on the power of open content and data to advance biomedical research and human health. Dr. Erick Turner, Associate Professor at OHSU and Staff Psychiatrist at the Portland VA Medical Center, will introduce OpenTrialsFDA (http://opentrials.net/opentrialsfda/), which is a finalist for the highly competitive Open Science Prize.
OpenTrialsFDA aims to increase access to and the utility of FDA drug approval packages. These review packages often contain information on clinical trials that have never been published. When these “inconvenient truths” are integrated into a systematic review or meta-analysis, it can sometimes dramatically shift a drug’s risk-benefit ratio.
Although the FDA makes the reviews available via its web portal Drugs@FDA, the documents are notoriously difficult to search and aggregate. As a consequence, they are rarely used by clinicians and researchers, despite their immense value. OpenTrialsFDA intends to change this by allowing researchers, clinicians, the public, developers, and third party platforms to access, search, and build upon this data.
Dr. Turner’s keynote talk will be followed by an overview of the NIH’s new clinical trial data sharing requirements and two concurrent hands-on sessions:
The first will be a deep dive on searching the OpenTrialsFDA website, understanding the contents of an FDA drug approval package, and how the data can benefit different use cases, such as meta analysis and systematic reviews.
The second will be a OpenTrialsFDA hackathon using the OpenTrials API (https://api.opentrials.net/v1/docs/). Attendees will have the opportunity to use their research, development, clinical, and visualization expertise (to name a few) to explore, present, and build upon the OpenTrials data and the OpenTrialsFDA application. Please note, no technical expertise is required, as there will be multiple ways of contributing.
The Data Jamboree is presented by OHSU Computational Biology and the OHSU Library. All are welcome to attend, including OHSU faculty, students, and staff as well as Portland area science enthusiasts and developers!

##### Dat: Peer to Peer open data for science, journalism, and government
###### The Dat Team (http://datproject.org/team)
Dat is a grant-funded, open-source, decentralized data sharing tool for efficiently versioning and syncing changes to data.
Built in Node.js, Dat can be used to version data locally, or to share and sync data over the internet. Dat includes an optional peer-to-peer distribution system, meaning that the more widely that a dataset is shared, the faster it is for users to retrieve or sync a copy, and the more redundant that the dataset’s availability becomes.
By building tools to build and share data pipelines, we aim to bring to data a style of collaboration similar to what Git brings to source code, while bringing a style of sharing similar to what Dropbox brings to file generally. Note that while Dat is a designed as a general-purpose tool, our team focuses on its use in the sciences.

We're very excited to welcome you to the Portland C++ User's Group (PDXCPP) meetup! Join us in downtown Portland at our host, Cedexis.
This month, we are very pleased to feature Thiago Macieira giving his presentation, ""C++ for Embedded Development"!
IMPORTANT: Because many members have conflicting holiday schedules, rather than the third Tuesday of the month, we are meeting this coming Tuesday, the 13th.
The evening will begin with pizza and beverages-- come hobnob, learn, and share with other modern C++ enthusiasts!
Looking forward to seeing you there,
- Your PDXCPP Organizers |

Colleges and universities in the Portland area are great places to work, and higher education has a lot of jobs in tech and related fields. With over 1500 positions across institutions in the PDX metro area, higher ed offers a wealth of opportunities for folks in tech.
Join PDXWIT and Reed College for a tech networking and learning event. Our focus is on information sharing for women and people of other genders generally underrepresented in the tech field. All allies are welcome and encouraged to attend.
The Reed community supports individuals with identities from across the spectrum. A significant part of that support involves actively combating racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, religious intolerance, ableism, and all forms of oppression and marginalization.
Kristina King and Marianne Colgrove are the organizers for the event, which will feature:
- Welcome & Introduction to Reed College Happy hour and networking Lightning round talks, including: Tech opportunities in higher ed (jobs and more) (Marianne Colgrove, Deputy CIO, Reed College)
- Teaching (with) technology (Kristin Bott, Associate Director of Instructional Technology Services, Reed College)
- How bringing our authentic selves to the workplace is part and parcel of increasing diversity in tech (Kathy Lee, Windows Software Developer)
- Servant Leadership in Times of Distress: Cherishing Uncertainty in a Black and White World (Marie Daniels, Owner at Me Out Loud, LLC)
- I can do anything; get out of my car! (Janessa Olson, Developer Support Engineer at Jama Software)
- How to network in higher ed (Michelle Valintis, Director of Human Resources, Reed College)
- More practice! kick off more networking
The Reed community supports individuals with identities from across the spectrum. A significant part of that support involves actively combating racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, religious intolerance, ableism, and all forms of oppression and marginalization.
Note:
-All parking at Reed is free and no permit is required. The closest parking is the West Lot on SE 28th between Woodstock and Steele. Getting to Reed http://www.reed.edu/getting-to-reed.html

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. |

So you want to start a podcast? Come to the STREAM PDX 24-Hour Podcast Challenge! Kick off the creation of your podcast by creating the first episode here in just 24 hours, and premiere it at the launch party on Saturday evening!
### Friday December 9 & Saturday December 10, 2016
The 24-Hour Podcast Challenge brings together people passionate about telling great stories through audio. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, the Podcast Challenge is the perfect event for making your dream a reality or just having fun!
Bring a team, find partners at the Friday night kickoff party, or work solo.
## How it works
On Friday night, we'll give an overview of the next 24 hours, and share some simple tips you can use to get started on your podcast episode. You can record on your phones, borrow field recorders, or book time in the STREAM PDX studio! Remember, simply using a better microphone won't help you tell a better story.
By dinner Saturday evening, the showcase begins and the fun continues! You'll finish editing the episode by 5pm, submit it for the evening show, and then relax and enjoy the rest of the night! Starting at 7pm the event is open to the public, and we'll premiere each team's podcast episode! Invite your friends to hear your creation and enjoy food and drinks!

<p>Thursdays are open house night here at CTRL-H. Jon and Melinda are available during this time to give guided tours, answer questions and show you all that the hackerspace has to offer. </p> <p>We don't have an opening ceremony or any formal meeting. This is a time for you to eavesdrop on other peoples projects and get support on a project that you may need help with. Bring your laptop, projects, inventions, your technical toys and your broken microwave to CTRL-H and hack with friends.</p> |
