##Getting Started with Kafka and Design Patterns for working with Fast Data
Apache Kafka is an open-source message broker project that provides a high-throughput and low-latency platform for storing and processing real-time data feeds. In this presentation Ian Downard will describe the concepts that are important to understand in order to effectively use the Kafka API. You will see how to prepare a development environment from scratch, how to write a basic publish/subscribe application, and how to run it on a single-node cluster in Virtual Box and on multi-node clusters in the cloud. Ian will also discuss strategies for working with "fast data" and how to maximize the throughput of your Kafka pipeline. He'll describe which Kafka configurations and data types have the largest impact on performance and provide some useful JUnit tests, combined with statistical analysis in R, that can help quantify how various configurations effect throughput.
##Speaker:
Ian Downard is a technical evangelist for MapR where he is focused on creating developer-friendly ways to use the MapR Converged Data Platform.

PDX Women In Tech (PDXWIT) presents a discussion with Colleen Yeager, Corporate Controller for Jama Software, to learn about her family’s journey as her six-year-old son transitioned from she to he. Colleen will share what this transformation has been like, as a mother, a wife, an employee, and a family unit; and how the transition awakened her son to his true self. Join us for an intimate and authentic conversation.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

Join us for this public event where Luka Mustafa, founder of open hardware Institute IRNAS will present open source open hardware networking and manufacturing solutions he has been developing together with his team for the past few years.
KORUZA:
Koruza is first open source wireless optical communication system for urban environments, connecting locations at up to 150 m distance, which empowers networks with 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps throughputs unaffected by radio spectrum saturation to provide last-mile networking without the need for fiber installation. Now, the version for professional use, which is bringing fibre-like speeds to ISP subscribers ten times cheaper, is available for preorder.
A kit version of the system - Koruza 1.0 is also available. This version of the system is modular and 3D printed, with assembly instructions and technical documentation published online so that researchers and everyone else interested can replicate it without a problem, understand its operation and be able to modify it for their own purpose.
GoodEnoughCNC:
In the process of the development of Koruza we realized we need an open source baseline manufacturing solution for prototyping and small series production. That's how we created affordable and versatile CNC solutions to enable simple production anywhere around the globe and to change how we manufacture things. GoodEnoughCNC philosophy is to offer effective digital manufacturing tools that are good enough for most of the applications an average maker needs. We’ll give you an insight into how GoodEnoughCNC machines were designed and developed, explaining the benefits of being effectively open source, using standard components and publishing documentation with instructions online as well as walk you
through some of the use cases to show how these machines can be used advantageously to improve lives of individuals and communities around the world, from Nepal to Principe island.
BIO Luka:
Luka Mustafa is a Shuttleworth Foundation Fellow, working full-time on wireless optical system KORUZA development at Institute IRNAS Rače in Slovenia that he founded in 2014, as well as being a PhD student at University College London. He leads a multidisciplinary team developing open systems ranging from CNC machines to electronics and fibre optic systems, promotes and deploys open wireless networks in wlan slovenia project and manages national and international wireless backbones.
About IRNAS:
At Institute IRNAS Rače we strive to apply the vast scientific knowledge to everyday reality by creating effective and affordable systems. We believe in an open-source world and sharing and we aim to empower the world with technologies that improve lives, let that be an advanced communication system or a simple everyday utensil. We are non-profit, rewarding the ones that create, always exploring new projects and ideas. All our work is published under open-source open-hardware licenses. |

Collective Agency’s shared office has all the office things, and a Community Mission Statement:
“Cozy places to work alongside people doing what they’re passionate about and committed to, where 80% of people say hi. Come and work here!”
Collective Agency membership is for people who want to work alongside other people, and to be working in a place where you can have conversations, eat lunch together, and over time form friendships. Members value productive work.
“I joined because I needed a place to really buckle down and get work done. I’ve stayed because it feels good to be there, I enjoy seeing the other co-workers and meeting new people, and because I still get more work done there than anywhere else.”
–Allie Quady, Momentum Health Coaching
“I’ve been working at Collective Agency since I moved to Portland June, 2013. I love my commute, I love coming in and seeing busy happy people, I’m on phone calls often and have the space available for privacy. I’m broadened by the community here.”
–Stefanie Zasyatkina, In Reach Solutions
There are many optional community activities, from weekly open Coordinating Council meetings where members ask for and make happen what they very much want, to lunches, happy hours, Lightning Talks, and opening new locations. Collective Agency is a self-governing community and business where members set the rates. Many people have been members for years.
Business owner Alex Linsker was recently listed as one of the “30 Most Influential People in Coworking.” Collective Agency has constantly been listed as one of the 30 top coworking places in the United States, is a member organization of the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives, and CEO’s awarded it the most awards on The WorldBlu List of Most Democratic Workplaces™ 2013 for best practices in workplace culture.
Membership rates are $250 per month for as-many-days-as-you-want, and $120 for up-to-6-days-a-month.

Learn why building a mission-driven organization that values and empowers its workers can be critical for your impact on the world as well as the sustainability of your business.
Join Jason Skipton from Growing Gardens, Julia Niiro from Let Um Eat, and Charley Wang from Josephine for a night of civic discourse, community discussion and, of course, food. |

Participate in creating a new arduino kit

ChickTech is working on our first retail product - an Arduino wearables kit for middle school and high school girls!
If you've happened to see the Soft Circuits workshop we hold at our annual kickoff or the middle school camp, this is the workshop in kit form. On Saturday, October 8, we are holding a testing session where we'll have girls come in and work through the kits. We need adult volunteers to help run this event by observing the girls, asking questions, and taking notes on their progress.
This is an excellent opportunity to participate in the product creation lifecycle and help shape a product that will affect the lives of potentially thousands of young kids. |

We’re SureID®, (www.sureid.com) a leading provider of secure high-assurance identity programs and services. We’re always searching for talent who can bring our ideas to fruition, and grow our culture of innovation, integrity, excellence and respect. That’s where you come in.
We’re interested in knowing more about you. So we’re hosting Beers for Engineers, an informal meet-and-greet where you can get to know us, and we can get to know you. You’ll meet our hiring managers along with other SureID engineers who share your passion for creativity and innovation.
While mingling with other like-minded individuals, you may get thirsty and work up an appetite playing ping pong, foosball or other vigorous games. To quench your thirst, we’ll have an assortment of microbrews on hand plus wine, coffee and soda. To satisfy your appetite, you can “build your own burrito” with all the delicious fixings. So RSVP at the website below. We’ll save a spot for you.
