Beyond The UX Tipping Point w/ Jared Spool
Roll back
| description |

→ |
IxDA Portland is delighted to welcome Jared Spool to the Pacific Northwest, to present his UX Tipping Point talk. Doors open at 6pm for drinks, snacks, catching-up with friends, and checking-out Wacom's swanky new "Experience Center" in the Pearl District. Jared's talk will then span ~45min, with time after for Q&A. We'll also be raffling-off books, and offering a discount code for UIE's upcoming Portland workshop series!
———
The UX Tipping Point
For the longest time, making a great experience for the user was a business-strategy luxury item. A great product only had to work and ship. A great experience was a nice-to-have, not a requirement. Times have changed. The cost of delivering a product is no longer a barrier to entry. Quality is no longer a differentiator. What’s left? The user’s experience.
Every part of the organization must be infused with an understanding of great design. Your organization has to cross the UX Tipping Point. You must increase everyone’s exposure to users, communicate a solid experience vision, and install a culture of continual learning. With that, design will become your organization’s competitive advantage.
Jared will show you and your team:
• Which path organizations take to become design-infused
• How a centralized UX team is a stepping stone to a more UX capable organization
• Why the market needs to demand a better experience before it will matter
• What your organization will need to do to cross the UX Tipping Point
————
Jared M. Spool is a co-founder of Center Centre and the founder of UIE. In 2016, with Dr. Leslie Jensen-Inman, he opened Center Centre, a new design school in Chattanooga, TN to create the next generation of industry-ready UX Designers. They created a revolutionary approach to vocational training, infusing Jared’s decades of UX experience with Leslie’s mastery of experience-based learning methodologies.
You’ll also find him as the conference chair and keynote speaker at the annual UI Conference and UX Immersion Conference, and he manages to squeeze in a fair amount of writing time. He is author of the book, Web Usability: A Designer’s Guide and co-author of Web Anatomy: Interaction Design Frameworks that Work.
You’ll find his writing at uie.com. You can also follow his adventures on the Twitters at @jmspool, where he tweets daily about UX design, design strategy, design education, and the wondrous customer service habits of the airline industry. |

OEN PubTalk: Opportunities in Cannabis
Roll back
| description |

→ |
It’s been two years since Oregon legalized recreational cannabis. What have we learned? What opportunities and challenges face the industry today? Where the industry is headed given the recent state and national elections? Join us at our March PubTalk to learn about the state of this budding industry from a diverse spectrum of entrepreneurs.
The OEN PubTalk™ is our flagship monthly happy hour — a perfect starting point for new community members and a great place for established members to make new connections. Held the second Wednesday of every month, OEN PubTalks are what the name implies — an hour of networking followed by a talk on a specified theme. And yes, they take place at a pub.
Our PubTalks usually kick off with a short pitch from an OEN member, followed by audience Q&A. As always, the program will be preceded by time for networking and will include free appetizers and pizza. Registration begins at 5:15 p.m.
Hashtag: #oenpubtalk
Cost: $10 for OEN members; $25 for non-members.

Hi everyone,
At the next Portland PUG meeting we’ll be talking about the new vRO plugin for Puppet Enterprise. The plugin makes it much easier to automate provisioning hosts in VMware and applying Puppet roles to them. Tommy Speigner will be showing it to us, he's a Technical Solutions Engineer at Puppet. I have seen a couple of demos of this and it's pretty cool stuff.
We hope to see you there :)

Lisa Yu has been practicing immigration law since 1997. She specializes in corporate immigration matters ranging from non-immigrant visas to permanent resident applications (green cards). Her clients range from multinational corporations in the financial and information technology sectors to hospitals and universities. She has developed a particular expertise in labor certification applications, employment-based immigrant visa petitions and adjustment of status applications.
Chanpone Sinlapasai is a partner at Marandas & Sinlapasai. She focuses on immigration law and specializes in assisting survivors of crime. She strongly believe that victims' right is a human right, regardless of alienage. Her immigration practice also assist clients before the Immigration Court, Board of Immigration Appeals, and U.S. Court of Appeals.

Auto-generated docs from the Erlang AST in Kazoo
Roll back
| description |

The Portland Erlang and Elixir User Group's March meeting
The age-old trope of developers being lazy and never writing docs has some basis in reality. What can we do to use the code developers write to create documentation and other assets? I'm not talking about annotations or "special" code comments either - the actual code (well, the AST the compiler creates from the code).
With Kazoo, we have a growing userbase wanting to build their own functionality on top of the platform; yet our docs were lagging, out of date, all over the place, or simply non-existent. Come learn how we are taking docs seriously, jump-started the effort by exploiting patterns in our codebase to auto-generate docs and JSON schemas, and built controls into our CI to hopefully ensure the docs are maintained and up to date.
Bio: Having worked on Kazoo for 7+ years now, James Aimonetti has made it his mission to bring better docs to Kazoo's open-source and commercial users. He wants to spread the gospel to other developers and hopefully provide some ideas for how you can bring docs into your development culture too! |

Write The Docs PDX - Learn About The Wacom User Help System
Roll back
| description |

<p>Wacom -- a company which develops Pen Input hardware -- needed a user help system to move beyond static PDFs. Their solution was to separate product-specific PDFs into a series of, mostly common, HTML topic pages. These HTML file were, in turn, processed into a web deliverable package via Python scripting.</p> <p>The solution is complex, as the Wacom system includes interrelationships between 150+ topics across over 30 products and 14 languages.</p> <p>The solution required “a more technical Tech Writer” -- as it required knowledge of HTML<br>Python<br>JavaScript<br>Excel Macros</p> <p>Wacom implemented their solution by integrating their tech writer in their Engineering team. They also included a dedicated engineering resource to support design and development of their technical docs.</p> <p>

Similar to traits in other languages, Elixir Protocols are contracts that modules can implement for enabling collections (both sinks and sources) and inspection. We'll take a look at Protocols, how to adhere to them and how to create them.
For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike.
If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches.
Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns.
If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them.
Food and drinks will be provided.
Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go.
