PDXWIT Quarterly N/NE Lean Coffee Gathering
Roll back
| description |
Women and other underrepresented groups in tech, particularly those who call North and Northeast Portland home, are invited to a special Lean Coffee networking event. This is a great opportunity to cross boundaries and broaden networks in a safe space. IntraEdge Technology Service & Solutions is happy to host us at Compass Coffee Roasting. If you’d like to start your Sunday off with a casual networking event, join us! The event is geared towards those who “find ourselves at the edges of the bell curve of demographics in tech fields,” as Brittany Newhouse so eloquently put it.
Don’t be intimidated by the Lean Coffee format; it’s not just for Agile practitioners. It’s simply an informal way to meet and discuss what interests and affects us.
The meetup will run from 8:30-10 a.m. Be there early to make your order before we start; coffee and snacks will be provided. This event is sponsored by PDXWIT, AgilePDX and Portland Lean Coffee.
Purpose:<br>
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events. |

Roll back

On September 7th, 2017 Equifax Inc., one of the largest three credit intelligence corporations in the world announced that it had been compromised from Mid-may through July of 2017. This breach resulted in the loss of information, including Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and driver's license numbers, for about 143 million people.
Join us Saturday, September 23rd for a free discussion regarding how this breach could affect you or your business, and what steps to take to limit the damage long term and protect your identity. We will field questions for a large portion of the event with the intent of better informing the community.
> It is not the core intent of this event to sell any product or service, the core goal is simply to better inform local business owners and individuals. |

PDXWIT Immerse Yourself in Virtual Reality
Roll back
| description |
Are you looking for an event to get better acquainted with Virtual Reality? In partnership with Joshua Alan Young from the Portland VR Meetup, co-organizers Judy Fischbach and Marguerite Gallagher invite you to come learn what Virtual Reality offers and to understand why there is so much trending interest. An emerging technology that is expected to impact many fields, including entertainment, journalism, education, and health care, VR/AR has been identified by the Technology Association of Oregon as one of top areas of technology growth in our state. The community in Portland is gaining momentum. It's an exciting time for many of us to jump in as the technology is so new. The playing field is more level and there is much interest beyond non-technology in areas such as the arts and education. The integrative nature of creating applications in VR can be unique and fun!
Don’t know where to begin? We will have an overview, hands-on opportunities to experience the technology, and information on tools and resources. Our panel will include speakers from the community on VR education and on companies/projects with promising VR related work which demonstrates the variety of exciting applications. Bring your questions!
We promise this will be a fun and memorable evening as we explore ways to grow community together in this fascinating new area of technology!

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events. |

What better way to start the new school year than with one of the founding members of the NW Education Cluster: Learning.com.
In addition to our usual networking and mingling, Learning.com's CEO, Keith Oelrich, will be our spotlight guest for another "fireside chat". It's a unique opportunity to hear from a pioneer in the K-12 online education market who's been a part of its evolution over the last 17 years.
Bring your business cards (or post-its and a pen) and be ready to meet and reacquaint yourself with peers working at the intersection of education and technology. See you there!

TECHFLUENCE

Join us for a special evening with Daniel Wilson, author of the New York Times bestselling Robopocalypse and its sequel Robogenesis, as well as seven other books.
Daniel, who earned a PhD in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University, as well as Masters degrees in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics will be reading from his most recent novel, The Clockwork Dynasty.
After the reading, Daniel will be joined by Todd Greco, Ziba’s Director of Interactive Design, in a conversation exploring where science, technology and design overlap, and the future of machines. We look forward to audience engagement in this conversation. Daniel will be available for a book signing following the speaking program.
The Clockwork Dynasty imagines a history in which humanlike court automatons secretly served the great empires of antiquity. Centuries later, the same machines are running out of power. As the modern-day survivors cannibalize each other for energy, a human scientist will risk her life to find the origin of the machine race, and the key to saving it.
Doors at 5:30pm, show starts promptly at 6pm. Pizza & drinks to follow. |

Your Jobs Are Safe: Rebutting the Jobless Future Freakout

I (Epicodus's founder, Michael) am going to give a talk at Epicodus's Portland office on Tuesday, September 19, from 6-7pm called "Your Jobs Are Safe: Rebutting the Jobless Future Freakout". I've heard and read a lot of concern in the tech industry and more broadly that technology and automation threaten to leave our world with very few jobs and massive inequality. I'll explore the history of massive technology shifts and their impacts on jobs, the current situation of automation and people-replacement, and what the future might hold. I hope you can make it! |

Celebrate 20 years of DreamHost!
Oh snap! DreamHost turns 20 this year and you’re invited to our birthday party! We’re taking it back — way back — all the way to 1997 for a slammin’ ‘90s extravaganza! Join us at our 2017 Reach Out & Touch You Event as we celebrate with not one but THREE parties for ourselves! What? It’s not weird. We’re worth it. If you live in or around any of the stops on our tour, we’d love to see you there!
We’ll be providing incredible food, plenty of adult beverages, and unbelievably stimulating (and educational!) conversations with some of our dopest DreamHosters! |
