A sixth-generation Oregonian, Ted was born in Portland and graduated from Lincoln High School. Ted earned his undergraduate degree in Economics from Stanford University, an MBA from Columbia University, and a Masters in Public Policy from the John F. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events.

How do you motivate a high performing team? What keeps them ticking, driving with passion, and remaining engaged?
Ideally, you are lucky enough to join a team that makes you excited to jump out of bed and come to work each day. Teams like this create amazing work often at a rapid pace. So how do we get there? How do we encourage, develop, and motivate a high performing team? On the flip side, what ideas have failed or harmed teams in our previous attempts that we may learn from and avoid?
Join us at the November Pub lunch to discuss strategies! |

Description:
QuoteCenter, located in Vancouver, Washington, was a $0 sales channel upon its acquisition by The Home Depot in 2013. By 2016, QuoteCenter drove more than $650 million in pro contractor sales to the world's fourth largest retailer, The Home Depot. However, with the growth in online marketplaces and the professional contractor market, QuoteCenter is fast becoming the confluence of products and services that pro contractors need to purchase the materials they need to serve their customers. Although their history lies in the in-store buying experience, QuoteCenter finds itself on the doorstep of a new age in commerce that blends technology innovation with the agility of a most talented retail workforce. Join us in learning how The Home Depot QuoteCenter is leading the way into an exciting new commerce age.
QuoteCenter has become a model for employers in the Portland area for how to build a strong, diverse team. An original Clark County rural startup, they struggled early to build a diverse team of professionals. In the last 9 months, however, 40% of their 51 new hires have been women.

AgilePDX: If You're Agile, Dance!
Roll back

Today companies need Agile throughout. But how can they go beyond software to include even board and basic legal structure? Share and comment on the journey Jutta Eckstein and I are on to answer that question. We first generalize the Manifesto to values of: self-organization, transparency, constant customer focus, and continuous learning. Then, deepen these values by adding Beyond Budgeting, Open Space, Sociocracy. A new organigram emerges that synthesizes board, inspiration, resource support, and value center perspectives and focuses them on the customer. Finally, use Cynefin to implement company-wide Agility, and then dance!
Format: The presentation will cycle between presenting ideas, posing questions audience small groups, and providing brief moments for sharing and reflection.
Bio:
John Buck lives near Washington, DC, USA, and is a division director for The Sociocracy Group, an international foundation headquartered in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
John has led dozens of sociocracy implementation projects for a variety of organizations around the globe, ranging from schools and neighborhoods to NGOs and for-profit manufacturers and IT companies using Agile. He believes that such basic values as equality, effectivness, and transparency can make our work places dramatically more elegant and sustainable. He excels in customizing sociocracy principles to each organization’s particular concerns, work schedules, and professional areas.
John was the first person outside of The Netherlands to receive consultant certification from The Sociocracy Group in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He has translated numerous documents from the original Dutch and is coauthor (with Sharon Villines) of We the People: Consenting to a Deeper Democracy, 2007 & updated 2017. Another book, Company-Wide Agility with Beyond Budgeting, Open Space, and Sociocracy, coauthored with Jutta Eckstein, is 70% complete in LeanPub.com. He also is part of a joint project with Fujitsu's Advanced Software Lab to create an app called Weaver to support meetings in-person, online, and offline.

Hey team, our customer wants to customize the product to change the workflow. How long will this take?”
How often does this type of question get asked for both internal and external projects, and how often does it complicate life?
Join the Technology Association of Oregon Dev & Engineering and Project Management communities for a conversation about challenges when estimating work, and talk about best practices to make life easier for both developers and project managers. From starting early with setting the sales team up for succes to gathering the right information, to exploring the pain points and business challenges along the way, we’ll discuss the pitfalls and perils of estimation and answer your questions along the way. |

Agenda:
Welcome
“How we turned the QuoteCenter diversity trend around” by Mike Lee, Talent Acquisition
“Where I fit in at the Quote Center” by Kelly Smith, Senior Reporting Analyst
“The only one in the room: success and failure on the way to diversity" by Whitney Williams, Front End Developer
Q & A
Event FAQ
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: Paid Street parking is available.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: The secure bike parking is in the parking garage and requires a FOB for the building. However, there are racks in front of the building.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: We are close to the street car and not far from bus routes. However, we would recommend driving, and plenty of street parking is available.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities.

At this meeting of Office 365 PDX we’ll be talking about how end-users can get to work with Power BI. We're thinking of this class as a "Power BI Flight School", where we are teaching the basics of how end-users will navigate and use Power BI, not how to build or maintain complex reports.
We will dive into viewing dashboards, reports, understanding natural language query, Excel, and the other tools a user needs. No prior experience with Power BI is necessary, this session is not very technical, and we’ll be handing out log-in information to get you hands-on in a pre-built environment. Just bring a modern laptop with wifi and an up-to-date web browser.
Please RSVP on the Meetup.com page. |

***Registration through Eventbrite is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event ***
For November #Action events, PDXWIT will be joining forces with Rose Haven to offer two unique opportunities to make an impact in local women's lives. Rose Haven is “a sanctuary from the street, offering compassion, practical assistance and community to women and children facing loss of home, abuse and other disruptive life experiences in Portland.” On Friday afternoons, Rose Haven offers computer lab hours to their members to provide those without computer and/or internet access the opportunity to have email correspondence, online job searches, online job applications, etc.
In November, PDXWIT #Action will help run two of these computer lab sessions as specific workshops. The goal of each November workshop is to help the Rose Haven members write personalized resumes and cover letters to use in future job applications. It will be a fun and engaging way to share knowledge and directly impact the lives of local women in need. Volunteers with all levels of prior hiring experience are encouraged to sign up to help with one or both of these events, but space is limited, so sign up today!
Event Breakdown:
November 3, 2017 - resume workshop. Please sign up before October 20, 2017.
After the signup deadlines, Melinda will be in touch through email to prepare the details for these events.
Agenda-
1:30 - Overview presentation and suggestions/sample templates
2:15 - 1 on 1 support
3:00 - Each Rose Haven attendee will emerge with their own personalized resume
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. <p><b>🔊 Welcome to WebAudioPDX 🔊<br></b><br>We're here to build a conversation and collaborate with people in Portland (and abroad) who're interested in Web Audio! </p> <p><br>Our first few meetups have been organizational & focused on gathering a core group of awesome individuals who're excited to build meaningful projects together. In October we’re continuing to trend towards learning together, getting active, and are connecting with the folks who implement Web Audio itself!</p> <p>This month we couldn’t be more excited to welcome <a href="https://hoch.io/"><b>Hongchan Choi</b></a>, who'll be sharing the magic of the <a href="https://webaudio.github.io/web-audio-api/#AudioWorklet"><b>AudioWorklet</b></a> with us!</p> <p><img src="https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/1/c/8/600_465293704.jpeg"></p> <p><a href="https://twitter.com/hochsays"><b>Hongchan</b></a> is implementing Web Audio for <a href="https://www.google.com/chrome/">Google Chrome</a> around the clock, and actively develops the <a href="https://webaudio.github.io/web-audio-api/">Web Audio API specification</a> itself as a member of the W3C <a href="https://www.w3.org/2011/audio/">Audio Working Group</a>.</p> <p><br>In addition, he’s been building incredible projects like <a href="https://github.com/GoogleChrome/omnitone">Omnitone</a> (Spatial Audio Rendering on the Web), <a href="https://hoch.github.io/canopy/">powerful prototyping tools</a>, and is paving the way for Web Audio to be how we interact with and enjoy sound across the Web.</p> <p>Here's what he'll be sharing with us this month:</p> <p>🔊⚡️🔊⚡️🔊</p> <p><br><b>AudioWorklet - "What, Why and How-to"</b></p> <p><b>Summary:</b> "What is <a href="https://webaudio.github.io/web-audio-api/#AudioWorklet">AudioWorklet</a> and why do we need it?" To answer this question, the context and background of AudioWorklet project will be discussed. In the later part, the advantage of <a href="https://webaudio.github.io/web-audio-api/#dom-audioworkletnode">AudioWorkletNode</a> over <a href="https://webaudio.github.io/web-audio-api/#the-scriptprocessornode-interface-deprecated">ScriptProcessorNode</a> will be presented with the <i>hands-on demo</i>. Also the talk is followed by several topics around AudioWorklet such as thread priority, garbage collection and <a href="http://webassembly.org/">WASM</a>.</p> <p>🔊⚡️🔊⚡️🔊</p> <p><br><b>Have a project to share?</b><br>Bring your <a href="https://github.com/WebAudioPDX/webaudiopdx/blob/master/2018-08/README.md#projects-shared">current projects to share</a> and get everyone stoked about them! If you have a demo you'd like to share–we'd love to see it! We hope to help each other out with encouragement, code, and helpful feedback.</p> <p><b>Are you a musician?</b><br>If you're a musician and not a programmer, and are interested in the internet of music and/or music tech, please come join us! We'd really love to talk with you and share perspectives!</p> <p><b>🎉 See you there! 🎉</b></p> <p>Missed the last couple meetups? No prob. These docs will get you up to speed! :D <br>• <b><a href="https://github.com/WebAudioPDX/webaudiopdx/blob/master/2018-08/obensource-presentation.md">Introduction to WebAudioPDX presentation Notes</a> <br></b><b>• <a href="https://github.com/WebAudioPDX/webaudiopdx/blob/master/2018-08/README.md">Initial Meeting Notes</a></b></p> |
