It's been a fun year getting this little book club started!
We'll wrap up the year with a holiday read: The Facilitator's Guide to Participatory Decision Making and maybe a year-end retrospective with some participatory decision making about what to focus on in the new year?
There are several editions of The Facilitator's Guide - they appear to get more expensive as they get more current. Me, I'm planning on reading the original, because it's a) cheaper! and b) has many, many great things said about it. Feel free to bring the copy you want - they all seem good!
Hope to see you for one last read in 2017! |

<p>For November, we have David Nash as our very special guest.<br>This is the last meetup for the year as we will be taking a winter/holiday break in December.<br>So make sure you join us and learn from a Product Management legend in Portland!</p> <p>Here's David's self-introduction:<br>"Since arriving here in ’92 from New York, Portland has been very, very good to me. Like the TV commercial says, ‘I know a few things because I’ve seen a few things’. I would add that I’ve been blessed to meet some amazing people along the way. I came here courtesy of Intel, where I worked for some 17 years, and where I had the good fortune to reinvent myself several times: from motherboards to software-video & telecom, from Intel Labs, to venture investing and internal startups, I did everything I could to try new things, soak it all in, and become versatile. After leaving Intel in 2006, I spent 10 years at ADP Dealer Services (now known as CDK Global) where we built software for Automotive Retailers & OEMs. Last October – just about 1 year ago – I had the amazing good fortune to join NAVEX Global, who provides the world’s most comprehensive Ethics & Compliance SaaS platform – and has the inspiring mission of helping organizations protect their people, reputation, and bottom line. Our mission really speaks to me because, as a Boy Scout Leader for 25 years, I care a lot about integrity and being a servant leader. In addition to networking relentlessly along the way, I’ve also followed my passion in Product Management and created ProductCamp Portland in 2012. We’re running our 7th camp in March 2018. This one will be exciting for sure. And free pizza as usual!</p> |

OWASP: Cloud Security Zen: Principles to Meditate On
Roll back
| description |

<b> Abstract: </b>
Your company has moved to the Cloud and must now determine the intersections of security, engineering and operations. This talk will share a set of approaches to challenges in the domains of segmentation, access control, auditing, and deployment tools. Each approach can be used independently, or contribute to a holistic cloud security strategy. As more companies move to the Cloud, new security team roles have been created that overlap with traditional roles in product security, operations, and engineering teams. I will highlight the shifts and solutions I have experienced working on corporate security teams and as a consultant."
<b> Speaker Bio: </b>
Samuel Reed has worked over ten years in computer security, having held positions at Vallation Security, Netflix, Zynga, iSec Partners, Adobe, and LynuxWorks. His experiences at these companies range from cloud security, to web applications and APIs, native applications, and kernel subsystem security. |

The What is Universe? (2018) conference-experience examines communication, complexity/simplicity, coherence/incoherence and, how they may or may not contribute to “a pluralistic universe.” This conference marks the third collaboration among scholars from the natural and social sciences, communication, media, law, design, and art.
Participants will explore universes—from reality bubbles, immersive virtual environments, and alternate histories, to agential realism, media genealogy and archaeology, to bio-inspired, urban and ecological design, to universal rights, disabilities studies, multicultural communities, networks, and cosmologies. With the definitions of “universe” continuing to multiply, important questions abound as we address a sweeping range of issues next April in Portland. |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Third Annual Women + Tech Holiday Party
Roll back
| description |
***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-third-annual-women-tech-holiday-party-tickets-39804880469#tickets] is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event ***
We are giving away the PDXWIT annual tote to the first 100 people who check-in.
Join us at our Women + Tech Holiday Party, co-organized by PDXWIT and WWC Portland in partnership with Lesbians Who Tech, ChickTech, PyLadies, and Girls Inc. This event is hosted by OMSI and sponsored by Nike, Cambia, the UW Foster School of Business, and ClientJoy.
2017 has been a big year for our communities and we are thrilled to come together, for the third year, to celebrate the holidays and what we’ve accomplished. In honor of our celebratory theme, PDXWIT and WWC Portland will be recognizing individuals for their great work over the year.
PDXWIT will be honoring two individuals, Best Contributor and Best Speaker. If you or someone you know has has been working hard to make PDXWIT a success or spoken at one of our events, please submit your nominations by November 19th. The Best Contributor award will be selected in advance by a panel and finalists for the Best Speaker Award will perform runoff Lightning Talks at the Holiday Party. The winner will be selected by text-to-vote.
At Women Who Code, we regularly celebrate the achievements of our members through the #ApplaudHer hashtag. We use #ApplaudHer to highlight victories ranging from accepting a new position and receiving a promotion to speaking at a conference and meeting a personal goal. The concept is simple: we believe that recognition can create change and that rewriting public perceptions can transform tech.
During the Women + Tech Holiday Party, we will announce our Tech Leadership and Rising Tech Star winners from the many submissions we have received throughout the year.
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a segment to hear from our sponsors and introduce and announce awards.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
- an activity table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
- table topics to help break the ice.
- a section for job seekers and those hiring to ensure people get connected.
Music will be provided by DJ Mienne.
Agenda
5:00 p.m. Doors open
6:00 - Introductions
6:30 - Awards announcements
7:00 onwards -Networking

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

Allowing those with disabilities to experience your product or website effectively can be crucial to its success. As creators of experiences for others, we need to take responsibility and make sure the content we are generating is consumable by as many users as possible. Silas will share tools and tips that will help you evaluate the current state of your project and its accessibility, along with ways to change the way you think about design, allowing you to target a broader range of users.
Come network with Portland's top digital marketing, design and optimization professionals at Buckman Public House located at Washington High School on the first floor.
Don't forget to RSVP and spread the word. First round of drinks is on us with an RSVP!
What is Camp Optimization?
Camp Optimization's mission is simple: provide a casual, fun and informative forum for digital marketers and technologists to share optimization best practices, challenges and wins.
Who is roboboogie?
roboboogie is a Portland-based digital experience optimization agency partnering closely with brands to improve conversion rates, nurture brand advocacy and increase customer value. |

Who are we? We are entrepreneurs, full stack engineers, hackers, continuous learners, but above all, we are a group that loves to work hard and play harder. We organize a variety of content types, and the organizing team believes in delivering the best value for time invested in our events. Companies have launched, founders paired, code taken apart, lessons learned, and more. We are not the typical meetup where a teacher like presenter stands in front of the class and delivers their message. We are a full hands on interactive experience and meetings are successful from the cumulative knowledge and expertise of all members.
Join us for something different.
Join us to learn.
Let’s have fun building our dreams.
