Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Free One-Day Course on Introduction to Web Design with HTML & CSS - 12/11
Roll back

<p>Have you ever wondered whether you'd enjoy computer programming? The Tech Academy is offering a free one-day course on Introduction to web design with HTML & CSS. These languages are used to develop the structure and styling of every website.</p> <p>This course is perfect for people with little or no experience in programming who are considering a career in software development. This way, you can find out ahead of time whether you enjoy the actual work of programming computers. A computer programmer does a lot more than just write code, but coding is the most important part of the job. </p> <p>Please make sure to bring your <b>laptop</b>, as this will be a hands on learning process where you get to code.</p> <p>Here is what some past participants had to say about the free one-day courses.</p> <p><i>I loved it. I love the explanations that the instructor gave. He was so patient and explained clearly. </i></p> <p><i>It was great. The instructor gave us lots of information and helped us grow and foster new skills.</i></p> <p><i>I was impressed by the organization and structure. Instructor was knowledgeable and kept the pace moving while taking extra time when necessary.</i></p> <p><br><b>Details</b></p> <p><b>Dates:</b> Monday, December 11 <br>Times: 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Classroom will open at 9:15 a.m.)<br><b>RSVP:</b> An RSVP is needed to guarantee a seat in the class, though we tend to have a few open seats for last minute attendees<br><b>Location: </b>13306 NW Cornell Road Portland, Oregon 97229<br>(Located on second floor above Foot Traffic running store) Parking: There is plenty of parking in the overfill lot behind the building, just off of Dale street. Please do not park in the main parking lot, so we can be good neighbors for the other businesses in the complex. There is no fee for parking.</p> <p><b>TriMet:</b></p> <p>Our recommendation on public transit if you are coming from downtown Portland: Take the MAX Blue Line or Red Line train to Sunset Transit center. There, catch the Bus 48 or Bus 62 which can drop you off right in front of the school.</p> <p><b>Please Note:</b></p> <p>• We will take a 45 minute lunch at approximately 12 p.m. • There is no refrigerator at this location, but there is a microwave to heat up a lunch.</p> <p>• There are number of eating establishments within walking distance where you can grab a quick bite.</p> <p>• Space is limited to ensure we can provide the best experience. • If something comes up after you sign up such that you are unable to attend, please change your status. This will allow others to sign up.</p> <p>For questions, please email [masked]</p> |

***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-january-happy-hour-networking-event-tickets-40888648047] is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event ***
Join us for happy hour at SurveyMonkey on January 23rd.
People often talk about creating a work culture that allows people to “bring their best self to work.” To start the conversation, we are asking “what is an important personal value you bring to work?” with an aim to allow us to explore who our best selves.
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
Introduction to SurveyMonkey, including what they do and what job opportunities are available.
Amy King, Software Product Manager at SureID, Inc., will talk about picking the right approach to design for emerging vs. established technologies.
Madonnalisa Chan, Freelance Information Architect - Taxonomist, will talk about making values-based decisions in your career.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
Table Topics to help break the ice.
A section for job seekers and those hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - : Event ends

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

Level Up: an Association, Awareness, Activation Conversation

Level Up: an association, awareness, activation conversation
Human beings, as diverse as we are, want the same things: money, deep meaningful human connections, more time/freedom to authentically be who we are. But there never seems to be enough of these. Thus some, maybe most, live in perpetual anxiety.
To cope they shrink their expectations about life, to ease their anxiety of living it, instead of examining their experience of life to live extraordinarily. No wonder so many believe the world is hostile to, or at the very least, ambivalent toward their extraordinary desires.
But is it really?
Level Up is a conversation that makes available a new association to life, making you aware of and activating a life of your dreams, whatever that means for you. Ultimately, total freedom and power are available from a simple re-discovery rarely explored. But everyone who makes the exploration, gets extraordinary, lasting and permanent results: a renewed love affair with living.
Discover something extraordinary: You.
Life will never be the same.
Level Up Master of Ceremonies: Perry Gruber
Perry Gruber stopped seeking happiness and fulfillment when he rediscovered his own leveling up. His self-re-discovery left him financially, emotionally, and professionally free, affording him the freedom to live his life his way and according to his desires. He is currently showing people how to create their version of his experience in their own lives. He calls this pursuit “the most fulfilling outlet of his personal self-expression.”

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Fourth Annual Women + Tech Holiday Party
Roll back
| description |
***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-third-annual-women-tech-holiday-party-tickets-39804880469#tickets] is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event ***
We are giving away the PDXWIT annual tote to the first 100 people who check-in.
Join us at our Women + Tech Holiday Party, co-organized by PDXWIT and WWC Portland in partnership with Lesbians Who Tech, ChickTech, PyLadies, and Girls Inc. This event is hosted by OMSI and sponsored by Nike, Cambia, the UW Foster School of Business, and ClientJoy.
2017 has been a big year for our communities and we are thrilled to come together, for the fourth year, to celebrate the holidays and what we’ve accomplished. In honor of our celebratory theme, PDXWIT and WWC Portland will be recognizing individuals for their great work over the year.
PDXWIT will be honoring two individuals, Best Contributor and Best Speaker. If you or someone you know has has been working hard to make PDXWIT a success or spoken at one of our events, please submit your nominations by November 19th. The Best Contributor award will be selected in advance by a panel and finalists for the Best Speaker Award will perform runoff Lightning Talks at the Holiday Party. The winner will be selected by text-to-vote.
At Women Who Code, we regularly celebrate the achievements of our members through the #ApplaudHer hashtag. We use #ApplaudHer to highlight victories ranging from accepting a new position and receiving a promotion to speaking at a conference and meeting a personal goal. The concept is simple: we believe that recognition can create change and that rewriting public perceptions can transform tech.
During the Women + Tech Holiday Party, we will announce our Tech Leadership and Rising Tech Star winners from the many submissions we have received throughout the year.
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a segment to hear from our sponsors and introduce and announce awards.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
- an activity table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
- table topics to help break the ice.
- a section for job seekers and those hiring to ensure people get connected.
Music will be provided by DJ Mienne.

This event is hosted by OMSI and sponsored by Nike, Cambia, the University of Washington Foster School of Business Hybrid MBA, and ClientJoy.

Please RSVP: http://bit.ly/2ADeNvo
WHY WE'RE HERE
So many of us are building amazing things at work and in the community - let's share, recognize and applaud our badassery. Our intent is to create speaking opportunities for gender minorities while holding a safe space for this technical learning community.
We are thrilled to host women and non binary speakers both local and from across the country. Talks are geared towards a technical audience compromised of respectful, curious, supportive individuals who care deeply about technology.
We start promptly at 5:15 and end by 6:30, kiddos welcome. Food and drink provided courtesy of Microsoft's Cloud Developer Advocacy Team.
Lightning Talk
Angela Yen: AWS 101 - The Basics of AWS in 7 Minutes or Less
Angela Yen is a senior software engineer at Cloudability, where she works on an app that helps companies manage and scale their cloud use efficiently. Prior to starting a new life surrounded by code, she worked as the producer of an international performing arts festival and before that as a legal aid attorney.
Pronouns: she/her/hers
Keynote
Paige Bailey: Well-Aged Bacon: Guessing Kevin Bacon's Age
Paige is Cloud Developer Advocate at Microsoft. When she's not sitting in front of glowing rectangular screens at work, she absolutely adores hiking / kayaking / mountain-biking around Texas' glorious Green Belt; resuscitating Apples; and (poorly!) attempting to play bass guitar. Personal passions are sustainable energy and climate change research; STEM education reform; and empowering local governments via data science. @DynamicWebPaige
