Quantified Self Conference
Roll back
| description |

<b>What can you learn about yourself using your own data?</b>
The Quantified Self conference is where DIY toolmakers, scientists, caregivers and patients, athletes, teachers, and everybody else interested in "self-knowledge through numbers" get together to share their projects and exchange what they'relearning about self-tracking tools and methods. This year we'll have a special focus on learning from our own data both inside and outside of the classroom. Tools that will be discussed include blood assays, home-built environmental monitors, and effective tools for emotional self-assessment. Want to build your own metabolism tracking device? Curious about the effect of circadian rhythms on cholesterol? Interested in genomics, microbiome, fitness, and diet? As always, we'll have two days of first person "show&tell" reports about self-tracking and learning in all these domains - and more.
The program is what we call a <i>carefully curated unconference</i>. We look at the projects and ideas proposed by everybody who registers, learn as much as we can, and then craft a series of talks and discussions reflecting the latest knowledge in the QS community. You can get a good look at the style of the meeting by watching some of the talks we've been posting from past conferences at http://quantifiedself.com/.
Join us! (And please don't forget to post something about your work in answer to the survey questions when you register.) |

OWASP Portland Chapter Meeting - SAST and the Bad Human Code Project
Roll back
| description |
SAST and the Bad Human Code Project:
Static application security testing (SAST) is the automated analysis of source code both in its text and compiled forms. Lint is considered to be one of the first tools to analyze source code and this year marks its 40th anniversary. Even though it wasn't explicitly searching for security vulnerabilities back then, it did flag suspicious constructs. Today there are a myriad of tools to choose from both open source and commercial. We did a comparative analysis of scanners specifically focused on web application vulnerabilities. We then turned our attention to finding additional ways to aggregate and correlate data from other sources such as git logs, code complexity analyzers and even a roster of students who completed a secure coding class. We wanted to go beyond just triaging in isolation the vulnerable code snippets reported by the SAST scanners. People write the code so why not use these added data features in an attempt to build a predictive vulnerability model if possible. We are not there yet but learned many things along the way.
We also want to call attention to a new open source initiative called The Bad Human Code Project. We need people to contribute intentionally vulnerable code snippets in as many programming languages as possible. Furthermore, we encourage folks to scan this project's repository and upload the results so others can review them for their SAST needs.
Speaker's Bio:
John L. Whiteman is a web application security engineer at Oregon Health and Science University. He builds security tools and teaches a hands-on secure coding class to developers, researchers and anyone else interested in protecting data at the institution. He previously worked as a security researcher for Intel's Open Source Technology Center. John recently completed a Master of Computer Science at Georgia Institute of Technology specializing in Interactive Intelligence. He loves talking with like-minded people who are interested in building the next generation of security controls using technologies such as machine learning and AI. |

We’re also looking for people to contribute to a new open source initiative called “The Bad Human Code Project.” The goal is to create a one-stop corpus of intentionally vulnerable code snippets in as many languages as possible.

OWASP Portland Chapter Meeting - Security Internships: Bringing up the next generation of hackers
Roll back

Anna Lorimer will present Security Internships: Bringing up the next generation of hackers
Software engineering internships are increasingly popular and are becoming an integral part of career development for newcomers to the tech scene. They’re also valuable to any organization because they give senior engineers the opportunity to pass on knowledge and make it easier to find full time hires down the road. While there’s plenty of information about how to run a software engineering internship, the same can’t be said for security internships. In this talk I’ll discuss how security internships differ from regular software engineering internships, how to find interns, and how to structure internships to set up both your organization and the intern(s) for success.
Bio:
Anna Lorimer is an undergraduate student studying math and computer science at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Canada. She’s done 5 internships over the course of her undergraduate career and is currently doing her sixth with New Relic’s Product Security Team in Portland. She is also the co-founder of StarCon, a technology conference focused on the joy of technology and building a community around sharing technical knowledge.

Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting Announcement
Who: Robin Haberman<br>
What: OpenStreetMap<br>
Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)<br>
When: Thursday, August 2nd, 2018 at 7pm<br>
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom<br>
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live
To fight global warming on the local level requires a change in thinking. We need to consider how new systems can be easily deployed and used by local groups. Supported by regional groups of academics, scientists, citizen scientists, journalists, environmental hackers, communities from the DIY and Maker movements. Systems that can aid local populations in their understanding of environmental and climate changes and help them deal with those changes. Our systems are aimed at the area that is the difference between today's weather and long-term climate changes ahead. These systems are designed to be the “last mile” of climate change monitoring, allowing local communities around the world to monitor their climate and take steps to mitigate changes. The systems will be owned and run by these communities with limited outside technical support, and can either stand alone or be tied together into an ad-hoc network similar to a small network of cellphone towers. Using our system to ask three questions: What is happening to our climate and environment? What does it mean? And what can we do about it? The hard data collected from the system, leaders in communities can begin planning how they will adapt and stay in place in their decision-making process. The GMIBS-Project will design, develop, and produce low-cost systems to aid local groups efforts to monitor and mitigate climate change. By this we hope to foster an ecosystem of users, developers, contributors, and competitors in an open global marketplace for climate change intelligent aid tool systems.
About Robin
Robin’s current work is on development of an Early Warring System for local climate changes. Graduated from a private high school housed at Reed College and staffed by students from Reed. His academic training includes several degrees with an international focus as well as information management and telecommunications (BS/AA and 3 Cert’s) Along with over 10,000 hours of professional training in intelligent networks and information storage, which gave him the skills and capabilities needed to work for two multinational and three foreign corporations. Other careers have been: Academic research for non-profit R&D organization; musical bands and llght show logistics.
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.
