A hackathon (aka hack day, hackfest or codefest) is an event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, collaborate intensively on a software project. Hackathons provide a wonderful opportunity to learn, share, contribute and build your network. With the opportunity to win fabulous prizes and build lifelong friendships, what better way is there to spend your summer? The hackathon is open to all skill levels. Team roles may include, but are not limited to: Documentation, Developing your pitch, Marketing Plan, User Experience Design, User Interface Design, Front End Development, Backend Development, Team Lead, Mentorship.
The Cascadia PHP Conference will be hosting a Twilio Sponsored Hackathon for Good event this year. Join us and your fellow participants to use your skills and knowledge for the benefit of local charities. The hackathon has a registration fee of $5 that will be donated to one or more charities at the end of the event. The hackathon will start on Thursday, September 13th at 1pm. Teams will have until Friday, September 14th at 1pm to submit their project for judging. Food and drink will be available during the hackathon on Thursday from 1pm until Midnight. Prizes will be awarded at the Cascadia PHP after party on Friday, September 14th. All Hackathon participants are invited to join the after party.
Twilio is also sponsoring FREE tickets to the full Cascadia PHP Conference to underrepresented devs such as women, PoC, LGBTQ+, and those w disabilities! [Charity Suggestions](https://goo.gl/forms/QxKhMubbR5tgWdyy2) will be open until August 31. Charities will be chosen by committee on September 1. Planning teams will be assigned by September 5. Planning teams will help to outline the actual project that will be created for each charity. If you would like to be on a planning team, please let us know once you register. All other participants will be able to join a team on the day of the Hackathon after the planning teams present their ideas.
Important Dates:
August 31: Last day to Submit a Charity Suggestion
September 3: Catering Order turned in. ( If you want to make sure there’s enough food, you should make sure you’re registered by now ;) )
September 5: Planning Teams Assigned
September 10: Initial Projects submitted
September 13: Hackathon starts at 1 pm
September 14 @ 1pm: Final submission accepted for prize eligibility
September 14 @ 6pm: After party and prizes

Title:
Formally Verifying Implementations of Distributed Systems
Abstract:
Distributed systems are difficult to implement correctly because they must handle both concurrency and failures: machines may crash at arbitrary points and networks may reorder, drop, or duplicate packets. Further, their behavior is often too complex to permit exhaustive testing. In this talk, we'll survey the Verdi project which provides a framework for implementing and formally verifying implementations of distributed systems in Coq. Verdi eases the verification burden by enabling developers to first verify their system under an idealized fault model, then transfer the resulting correctness guarantees to a more realistic fault model without any additional proof burden. Using this approach, the Verdi team produced the first correctness proof for an implementation of the Raft distributed consensus protocol.
Bio:
Zach Tatlock is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington where he leads the Programming Languages and Software Engineering (PLSE) group. He received his PhD from UC San Diego and BS from Purdue (where he took nearly every course with Bill Harris!). His research draws upon proof assistants, SMT solvers, and type systems to improve software reliability and security in domains ranging from distributed systems and compilers to web browsers. He can juggle and solve Rubik’s cubes, but not at the same time. |

1. "Ruby Persistence with CouchDB", Jesse Hallett
There are several libraries out there that provide high level interfaces between Ruby and CouchDB. I will give an overview of some of them, discuss the pros and cons of each, and show how these libraries make working with CouchDB easier. Along the way I will talk about the particular types of problems that CouchDB is good at solving.
Jesse Hallett has been designing web applications with Ruby for nearly three years now. He has worked on administrative / record-keeping applications, CMS and Ecommerce platforms, and various other pieces of software. He spends as much time as possible with his fellow geeks in organizations like the Portland Ruby Brigade and the Portland JavaScript Admirers. Jesse has developed a strong interest in the evolving state-of-the-art of client-side JavaScript technology and next generation databases. Jesse is currently developing JavaScript technology at Jive Software.
2. "Testing iPhone apps with Ruby and Cucumber", Ian Dees
This talk begins with a survey of the landscape of iPhone UI testing. In particular, we’ll discuss the groundbreaking work done by Matt Gallagher in stimulating and spidering the iPhone UI with an XPath test script. That will be a natural jumping-off point to explain why a full-fledged “GUI driver” for iPhone apps has been long in coming. We’ll look at different ways to prod at application code, and discuss the tradeoffs. Finally, I’ll introduce a simple library of Ruby glue code to connect Cucumber test scripts to the iPhone. The technique will be very basic, but just powerful enough to test a simple iPhone app.

Since then, he’s debugged embedded assembly code using an oscilloscope, written desktop apps in C++, and joyfully employed scripting languages to make testing less painful. PDXWIT is a 100% volunteer-run organization, which means that volunteers are crucial to the success of our mission.
There are plenty of ways to get involved. At the orientation, you'll learn about different volunteer roles, from regular engagements to occasional gigs, get an overview of expectations and processes, have any questions you bring answered, and catch up with other PDXWIT community members.

A: Yes - The host can accommodate bike parking in the basement vault for the hours of the event only, and bikes would be stored at owner’s risk. They ask for advance notice to get an idea of space needed.

A: Yes

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

In this talk, we'll use image recognition to take an existing deep learning model and adapt it to a specialized domain (namely: guessing whether articles of clothing are preppy, sporty, punk, etc.). Instead of using a more intensive data classifier, like a Residual Network, we'll use deep transfer learning to overcome a data scarcity problem and build on top of an existing model.
Once the transfer learning model has been trained, we'll pack it up into a dockerized container (specifying inputs and outputs, as well as a score.py file), and then call it as a web service. We will also discuss a #DataOps process for refreshing the model as trends change over time. |
