CNPDX Sept: Cloud-Native Databases with TiDB
Roll back
| description |

→ |
For an opening act, CNPDX organizer Josh Berkus will demo a walk-through of deploying high availability PostgreSQL as an application on Kubernetes.
Our main event will be:
Deploying TiDB, a distributed open-source MySQL-Compatible HTAP Database, using Kubernetes
This talk will introduce TiDB's architecture, key use cases, a user story with Mobike (one of the largest bikesharing platforms in the world), and a deep-dive into deploying TiDB as a *stateful* application using Kubernetes. TiDB is built by the company PingCAP and its open-source community.
Speakers: Ed Huang (co-founder/CTO of PingCAP), Kevin Xu (GM of U.S. at PingCAP)
As a special bonus for this meetup, TiDB will raffle off a Google Home Mini at the end of the presentation.
Our meetup host this month will be software maker Eleven. |

Roll back

Tonight, we're gathering over sharing a collection of lightning talks show-casing new things we've learned or built...essentially, live demos of our `#cool-til` Slack channel 😄 ... including showing a system running EXWM (the Emacs X Window Manager) where Emacs runs regular applications *inside an Emacs buffer*. Why? Well having a full featured, but light-weight and *essentially mouseless* window manager would work well on older systems.
Feel free to attend or participate, and if you can't make it physically, please join us virtually: http://meet.jit.si/pdxemacs
After our show and tell session, we'll retire to a nearby restaurant for food and drinks. Hope to see you there. |

Hack the Dot!
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
*Hack the Dot* is a hackathon where code school students, working developers, marketing and design professionals, and anyone else interested in the Web come together to build ideas. Use your skills in web development, storytelling, and creative ideation to build a humorous (maybe even functional!) product, while meeting people in your tech/startup community. This quarter we're teaming up with pdxFLIT and Puppet Labs. Join us!
*How does it work?*
At a domain-driven hackathon, all of the teams are given a single premium domain name at the beginning of the event. All teams then have two hours to come up with a product inspired by that domain, fueled by food and beverage. Whichever team builds and pitches the most creative and funny idea for the domain wins!
Prizes include the premium domain name itself, plus swag from our sponsors!
*Timeline*
6:00 - Meet with teams, get food and drink
6:15 - MC introductions, reveal the night's domain name!
6:30 - Start hacking!
8:30 - Stop hacking, team presentations
9:15 - End presentations, announce winner
*Do I need to bring a team?*
Nope! Teams are formed randomly at the beginning.
*Do you have a Code of Conduct for this event?*
[We sure do!](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/c/1/a/highres_471776346.jpeg) Make sure you read and agree before signing up! |

Please join us at Elevate Capital’s first annual Elevate Inclusion conference, a gathering of entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds including women, minority entrepreneurs from underserved communities, and veterans as well as venture capitalists and investors. Elevate Capital will invite a select group of entrepreneurs to present in front of potential investors.
The conference program will feature keynote presentations and panel discussions focused on inclusion, entrepreneurship, mentor capitalism, success stories and other topics. It will be a day of learning, sharing, inspiration, and new funding opportunities.
Providing startup funding to the next break-out entrepreneur is only part of what Elevate Capital believes that venture capitalists and other investors should do. Working to ensure inclusion while providing mentorship and funding to entrepreneurs from underserved communities is a vital part of building thriving business communities. |

PHPDX - Up to my Eyeballs in Technical Debt!

<p>**PLEASE NOTE THE DAY HAS CHANGED. We will be meeting on a monday this month. There will still be pizza, learning and networking with the fabulous PHP Community!**</p> <p>Every decision we make in our projects has the potential to increase or reduce technical debt. While the only way to completely eliminate the debt is to never write any code, there are steps that we as engineers, project managers, and project stakeholders can take to mitigate our risk.</p> <p>This talk covers the concept of technical debt, its potential to devastate projects, and red flags that project teams can look for to reduce its impact before it spirals out of control.</p> <p>--------------------------------------------------------------</p> <p>Steve Grunwell is a Senior Software Engineer at Liquid Web. Specializing in WordPress and application development he has worked with brands and organizations including Microsoft, TED, Xylem, Elmer’s, and Experience Columbus.</p> <p>Steve has released numerous plugins in the WordPress.org repositories, including one from the grounds of The White House during the first annual National Day of Civic Hacking in 2013. When he’s not writing software he enjoys hiking, music, and writing about writing software on his blog.</p> <p>Steve holds a B.A. in Telecommunications from Bowling Green State University where he graduated Cum Laude with minors in General Business and Recording Technologies.</p> <p>More information, including portfolio work and his development blog, can be found at <a href="https://stevegrunwell.com" class="linkified">https://stevegrunwell.com</a>.</p> |
