Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect and even harder to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar guided by an engineering leader at Elemental, we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
• Morning preparation, attire, mindset
• Preparation for the non-technical parts
• How to study for the coding interview
• How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 40. Never fear: we will be organizing this same event bi-monthly because we want everyone to have access to this session!

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

She is a product management expert, having taught numerous courses for General Assembly and coached enterprise organizations including AT&T, Target, Marriot, and Blue Shield. She has also helped dozens of startups launch and scale their ideas in market.

Shamir Karkal is co-founder and CEO of Sila, a simple, secure, and accessible suite of developer tools for building financial applications. At the heart of Sila is a new regulatory-compliant ERC-20 token which is pegged to the US dollar via a centralized 100% reserve held in US Treasuries. The Sila token will be used as the base for an API platform that will offer developers APIs such as ID Verification, Account Linking, ACH and Card in/out, and token transfers. Shamir has a unique take on FinTech product development, as he is a software engineer turned finance and banking expert who co-founded Simple and headed the Open Platform at BBVA.
Christian Maynard-Philipp Christian is the CCO and COO of Third Party Technologies, a FinTech that provides brokerage API services to digital Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs), software, and trust companies. Prior to Third Party, Christian worked for Acorns, after Portland-based Vault Investments, a retirement-savings app, was acquired last year. Christian has also worked to innovate financial policy both locally and nationally and co-led the rollout of the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Empowerment Innovation Fund. Christian is an honors graduate of George Mason University’s Master of Public Policy program and holds several financial licenses.

We'll have a short presentation on deep NLP and review the paper "StarSpace: Embed All The Things!"
The major vendors in cloud-based services are starting to provide machine learning as a service, such as Google Cloud AutoML Natural Language and Azure Language Understanding (LUIS). Jim Tyhurst will give a brief demonstration of IBM Watson Natural Language Classifier service (https://www.ibm.com/watson/services/natural-language-classifier/), which enables you to build a custom classifier with no programming. Just create a new instance and submit training data. When the system has finished training, you can submit a document through a web API. The system responds with JSON, giving a list of some possible categories with a confidence score associated with each category. We will discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of this service.
StarSpace: Embed All The Things! - describes a general-purpose neural embedding model that can solve a wide variety of problems: labeling tasks such as text classification, ranking tasks such as information retrieval/web search, collaborative filtering-based or content-based recommendation, embedding of multi-relational graphs, and learning word, sentence or document level embeddings. https://arxiv.org/abs/1709.03856 |

Speaker Bios:
Jonathon Carothers, is a database developer on the student team at Interject Data Systems and a computer science student at Washington State University Vancouver. He is currently working on database projects as well as client reporting software, at Interject. He also has a passion for acting, appearing in stage performances and local films.
Robby Boney, is a python developer at Interject Data Systems and a computer science student at Washington State University Vancouver (WSUV). Previously a bioinformatics programmer at WSUV, he spent 3 years studying auditory regeneration before starting work at Interject in 2018. He is also an experienced music producer who has worked on tracks for local and Hollywood based music artists.
Hannah Stepanek has been programming in python for 6 years. She used to work at Intel and now she works at a non profit startup called Hypohesis. In her free time she enjoys jumping her horse, remodeling her house, and playing board games.

<p>Hack2Learn is a monthly CTF (capture the flag) meetup hosted at PASCAL in Portland, OR. PASCAL is an organization of equal opportunity hackers, and we will be introducing you to all the various types of challenges that you might face at any level, and at any time in the fields of information security and technology as a whole, for fun or profit.<br>Hacker/Tech culture and community can sometimes be a bit (or a byte ^_^) off-putting, especially to those trying to figure out what exactly it is, what we are and what we do. During this workshop at PASCAL, we welcome n00bs with open arms! Never competed in a CTF challenge before? Never even heard of CTFs? Do you have a strong desire to learn & teach alongside peers? GOOD!! You will fit right in at Hack2Learn!<br>For the October edition of Hack2Learn, we will be focusing on web and binary challenges. First we will make sure everyone is set up with a virtual machine and the OS of their choice (though Kali is recommended, specifically for the web challenges). For the binary challenges we will install Cutter which is something of an intro to Radare2. You are encouraged to familiarize yourself with Cutter and R2 prior to the workshop; take a look--> <a href="https://github.com/radareorg/cutter" class="linkified">https://github.com/radareorg/cutter</a> (note: downloading a VM and/or installing a new OS is not necessary for using Cutter when working on the binary challenges, unless you're using Mac OS in which case you will need to spin up a VM for either Windows or Linux).<br>Basic understanding of at least one programming language and/or security concepts is helpful, but not necessary. Honestly, when we say all you need is a desire to learn, we mean it!<br>Cylon is setting up a wireless hacking station for October H2L as well, and will be offering some hands-on experience to anyone interested in the wonderful world of wireless hax!<br>If you have a laptop, bring it. We have a handful of loaners for those who need them, as well as a few desktop PCs for use at the hackerspace. So, brush off your social anxiety, leave your impostor syndrome at the door, and let your inner hacker take a crack at capture the flag!</p> <p>Questions? We normally have 12- 24 attendees - some people register on Meetup, others show up every week or see the event on Calagator. All are welcome. Pizza and beverages are served. Parking is free!
Bring your laptop. Learn and/or share your existing knowledge with others. This group focuses on Python, Django, JavaScript, jQuery, SQL, CSS and HTML. Other languages are welcome.
This week we will do introductions at 6:20 then pair up mentors and learners and/or work on projects.
Set aside one night a week to become a better developer, pick up new skills, and get help with your projects and learning. We'll have mentors on hand and a community of other learners to meet and work with.
This event is beginner friendly, we can help get you started with programming, support your online learning, or just talk about where you are at and what comes next.

This class builds on the concepts introduced in Programming with Javascript 1 by exploring advanced data types (arrays and objects) and some of the language’s built-in functions called methods. Students will get a brief introduction to these ideas and then begin applying them hands-on through a series of mini projects.
